Here is a question I always get asked by people and those with law enforcement. Why are you carrying a gun? And what do you need to carry a gun for? i don't really understand the question is how I reply most of the time. So they usually don't ask again. I meen, what is with that question anyway. Lest examine that question and its possible answers. I carry because I can. I carry because you can't be there when the perpetrator is stabbing, beating, robbing, or other wise violating my human rights. I carry so you don't have to charge some dumb schmuck with a crime that will get a plea aggreement made to, then the criminal walking with either no time ,or very little time, and then you'll have to arrest him again, and again, and eventually he will die of old age in prison if lucky. see what kind of answers we can come up with for this seemingly poorly thought out question, why do you carry a gun?

I think that just about says it all. I won't be a victim, or at least an easy one. Would a police officer wait to see if a weapon pointed at them is going to be fired before shooting in defense? No, no, no! I saved my sister and myself once from a would be rape/ murder circumstance by doing what I had to do in a situation that didn't offer me the opportunity to ask if he was going to surrender. This was my first time having to defend myself or another, and back in 1970, a time when crime was at a lower level. I would have to really stop and think of the number of times since that day that my weapon has saved mine, or another life, from certain death, or life threatening injury. I know that I may be an exception in that I've had so many encounters with criminals of this type, or maybe its that I'm just honest and revealing of such events too! If you feel safe when your not prepared to, or capable of, defending yourself, your acting foolish because your playing a game of russian ruelet of time and chance, in my opinion.

The one time a cop asked why I carry a gun I said, "For the same reasons you do."

Oh, my.
We've asked and answered this question often. Hunt around the General Discussion thread. Some of the answers are very good. Some hilarious.

I've been saving that one up myself, but with the dozens after dozens of cops in Arizona that just don't even give you a second look for having a gun, I don't think I'll ever get the chance to use that line. At least not while I'm in Arizona.

Because I am and we are the Well Regulated Militia. There is no way the government or local police can protect us all and in this day and age to not be capable of protecting at least yourself let alone your patriots is ridiculous.

Prior to retirement, I was a FLEO. I arrived home one night, and rather than going right in, I opted to have a smoke. I took off my coat revealing two 1911's in a custom "Miami Classic" type rig.
As I was sitting there, an armed, uniformed Phx LEO was just beginning to walk by when he noticed that I was armed. I got the dumb question, "Sir, why are you carrying two guns? Followed immediately by, "are you suggesting that I'm not capable of protecting you?" (trying to stir fear of having insulting a cop) I said something like 'you see Sir that's where the problem comes up - I don't know you, or what your abilities are!' He is getting a Lil Pissed and Says something like, 'but you are assuming that you can do a better job at protecting you, than I can???? (getting louder) I responded with, Sir as we stand here the only thing I am sure of are my own abilities, and yes I think I could do a better job!!!!!'
O.K., by this time he is pissed & it shows in his beet red face. BTW he is about 25, I was about 50. He quickly asks me, "you a cop?", and I said nope! Hey technically I was an agent not a cop. I offered a solution. I said, 'the only way we can settle this is when you're not working. He says, "We can do that at Avery" I said O.K. I make the rules. You bring the duty gun you're wearing, and I'll come as I am. We'll do silhouette targets. To make it interesting I'll bet $100 that I can draw from concealment and put two an inch down from the hair line (imaginary) in less than 1.5 seconds, and he says 'OK with me'. I asked him how far out he wanted the targets. He thought about it a sec, and said 25 ft. I said 'tell ya what I'll bet $1000 to your $100, the targets at 100 YDS He panics and says this is some kind of trick or something; and I swore it wasen't.
I finally confessed, and he says; you couldn't have made the shots anyway. By now we're getting along cool and I tell him our range officer's number and told him to give him a call & ask how he thought you'd do against me. Next afternoon I get a call from the RO who gives me the basics of the call I had to laugh. He told the guy what I shot (then) he told him that I was HRT and he'd seen me routinely seen me do coffee cans at 75 YARDS. and with one gun my time ran about 1.35 - 1.39, with two about 1.68 - 1.71.
I NEVER DID TELL THE GUY (AT THAT TIME ON-THE-JOB APPROX 27 YEARS) THAT THROUGHOUT MY CAREER, THE FIRST THING I DID 5 DAYS A WEEK, WAS FIRE 250 PRACTICE ROUNDS. WITH ALL THAT PRACTICE "IT WOULDA BEEN A TRICK"!

because I cant carry a cop with me 24/7, or a cop is too big to fit in the holster
But the real reason is protection for me and my family

That's a dumb question. Police have no duty to 'protect' an individual. 'Never have. 2 guns or 4 guns... that's a personal choice. I used to run into a guy who carried a pair of 7" Colt SAA's all the time. A bit heavy 'n antiquated for my taste... but his choice. I've carried my .45 SAA now 'n then... but nowhere purely for self defense. Here 'n there I've carried my 1911-A1 OC and a Makarov 9x18mm in a jacket pocket... those few times I wear a jacket. I have an AZ CCW to do that.
Sometimes I add the knife to my gunbelt... as my secondary 'arm'. My choice.

The next time a cop asks if you don't believe he can protect you, just ask, "so, are you volunteering to be my 24x7 bodyguard then?"
