Since my run-in with CRPD, I've been working with CO Senator Mark Scheffel on the best way to respond to municipalities who harass OCers.  He came up with an excellent suggestion that I want to toss to out to everyone.

He suggested hosting a seminar/training session about carrying firearms in public.  We'll cover OC and CC to get the widest support from 2A groups and LE organizations.  He thought we could get a few of the County Sheriffs to show up if we talk about CC (Douglas & El Paso at least) and hopefully other local LE organizations.  This event would be open to the public AND Colorado LEOs to talk about the carrying options and law related to each.  I'd like to find a way to include a few scenarios about what should be expected from both the citizen and the LEO during an LEO encounter.  That's where we would be able to teach the local LEOs about what is and is not appropriate, but in a non-confrontational way.

Mr. Scheffel said that he would attend and would try to get other Senators to attend as well (he thought Sen. Greg Brophy certainly come).  He also said he'd round up all of the RMGO, CSSA & NRA guys at the capitol, and that we could probably even get one or more of their lawyers to DO the actual seminar, free, with enough support.

Right now I just want to throw this out to you guys and see what you think about it.  I know that many people favor a lawsuit but I think if we can get a number of the LEO organizations together in a public forum and let them know what is/is not appropriate or legal, we'd have a better chance of making a good impression than threatening/suing them.  As I've said, this is pretty much HIS idea and I'm trying to find a way to implement it.  Let me know what you guys think.  Thanks.

I like it. I think all of us in the end would love to be able to go about our day and not worry about being harassed by any LEO more than we would like to sue them because that only means higher taxes for us. Let me know if you need help with any of this, I will try to pledge what time I can.

Great idea.   I would STRONGLY encourage you to contact Tony Fabian (firearms lawyer and president of Colorado Sport Shooting Association) to attend and speak.

I think it sounds like a great idea. Many of us know our rights in a general sense, but not necessarily the specifics of legal decisions that support those rights. Information on where one can and cannot carry would be good to have in one place.

I think a seminar thing is an awesome idea.  Getting OC/CCers together with LE would be very productive all around, and help everyone involved see more eye-to-eye on a lot of topics.

I think that it's a great idea.  If and when we get a firm time I'll be sure to invite my local representatives.  I hope the irony of having this in the only county of Colorado that doesn't allow OC isn't lost on anyone.

I had a thought tonight. We should also see if they would invite the dispatchers to come to this meeting. They are really the first line that a lot of the people talk to when you have a MWAG call. They may still have to send uniform officers but maybe we can have them give better details to the officers than just 'we have a man with a gun at this location wearing these clothes.'

Sounds like a great idea all around. I really like the idea of inviting the dispatchers. I'll be there when it happens! We should post details on coloradocarry.com as well.

An invitation to all Sheriffs of all Colorado Counties should be included. Please do not forget us over here on the Western Slope.  Also, maybe include the main dispatchers and the captains of the various State Patrol areas.

I work pretty closely with the 4C troopers out of Glenwood, have been invited to shoot with them during their quarterly qualifying, and Captain Duran is a real honest to goodness great guy.

Would a District Judge or two be out of line......?

I think we should invite as many people as possible.  I appreciate the positive response to this idea.  I was thinking about creating some kind of website where people could sign-up, anonymously or not, to attend the event simply to gauge the interest in it and to allow me to find a proper venue.  We could also use this site and the sign ups to pressure our public servants to attend.  Any suggestions?

I created an event information page w/registration at http://coloradocarry.eventbrite.com/.  There is no date/time, and it only says Castle Rock because I had to enter a city.  I'm hoping to get everyone's feedback on this before we publicize it.  I'm open to any changes to outline, scope or content.  Thanks everyone.

I went ahead and signed up.  I think that my parents would enjoy coming to something like this too.

This sounds like a great idea!  I recently purchased my first handgun,  SP 101 .357, and am always looking for new information on carrying.

UPDATE:  Since I didn't get any negative feedback about the text for the event, I am asking everyone in Colorado who simply might be interested to signup at http://coloradocarry.eventbrite.com/ so that we can garner the maximum amount of support.  I will be contacting all of the 2A groups this week and asking for their support as well.  Please spread this link around to as many people as possible.  The more we can get to come, the bigger impact we will have in our communities and our state.  Thanks everyone!

I've signed up. I also cross posted the link to eventbrite and the opening post of this thread to coloradocarry.com There has been a pretty good response to it over there and I know several from that site have already signed up. It looks like there should be a lot of interest in this.

Thank you VERY much for posting it over there.  We are definitely getting some momentum.

I have also registered. I think this is a great idea.

Just want to say hi to everyone. This is my first post but have been lurking for a little bit. I have not OC'd yet have my CCW and prefer to carry that way but there are several times especially during the summer were it would be nice to OC. Need to get up the nerve to try.
