I am in the process of obtaining my carrying permit. I just called today for my fingerprint appointment (Dec. 18), and was told the first available date is Feb 28th!! Once this happens, how long should I expect til I actually get the temporary permit?

Thanks in advance,
Chris

Wow.  I live in Southbury and submitted all my paperwork on 12/2 so I will be at 3 weeks next week.  I was able to do fingerprints on the spot when I submitted my application.  They do walk in fingerprinting everyday from 2:30 to 3:30 and no appointment is needed.  They told me to expect only a 4 to 6 week wait for my temporary permit.  Anyone have any experience on actual timing in Southbury?

End of February?  That is ridiculous.  This is a clear attempt to block you from getting a permit.  What if you needed to be fingerprinted because you were starting a job as a teacher or a bus driver?  Would the PD make you wait that long too?  I would contact your council rep and/or Mayor Miron right away.  Perhaps there is another local PD that will do the fingerprinting for you?  They may charge a fee if you are not a resident.  My PD is a fourth the size of Stratford's yet we do fingerprinting on pretty much a walk in basis depending on how busy it is.

I'd certainly call your representative and see what they say, they might not want to get involved as there's a lot of aggravation between the town council and the mayor and the mayor and the PD - long story short the mayor forced out the old police chief and had his buddy the town attorneys brother installed as the police chief.  Last month the entire SPD had a confidence vote in the chief and it went down 83 to 10 NO confidence.  Sad.

You might call Troop G in Bridgeport and explain your predicament to them and see if they will do the fingerprinting for you.

Stratford charges to do this if you're a resident or not so that shouldn't be a concern.

The only other thing I can suggest is call the DPS SFLU in Middletown and explain that you are being denied a timely opportunity to even apply for a town permit and since it's a STATE permit you're after what other options are available to you.  You never know, they might offer to let you drive up to Middletown and do the application there.

One thing I didn't try was ask the detective if you could pay him for his overtime and have him do it after hours.  I hate the idea of having to pay extra for something you shouldn't really have to pay for at all but I hate the idea of a lawful citizen being unable to even APPLU until February!! that's BS.

Let us know how you make out with these other avenues if you persue them, might help someone else down the road.

Oh and you can expect anything from 6 to 10 weeks after the application to be told your town permit (paper slip) is ready.

It took 7 weeks and 4 days to get mine. I just got my plastic one along with the paper one today. I had my paper permit for no longer than an hour =D.

**To JumpMaster** If you are going to get an endorsement like I did for Public Service or bus driver there is no waiting period to get your finger prints done. I walked in one day and got them done in 10 min. If your are a resident of Stratford you get them done at Stratford PD**

I had to wait 2 months to get my finger prints done for my permit and I called on Dec. 15 to find out what was taking so long and the detective just laughed at me and says buddy we don't get anything back from the FBI till 10-12 weeks and your no where near that window (7 weeks at the time). The 16th the letter telling me my permit was ready was typed up and sent and the 17th I got the letter.

All in all I think the entire system is unorganized and there is to much misinformation/misinforming going around in CT to it's residents regarding guns. Just like the issue with open carry WE know it's LEGAL but the general public does not nor does the police know or want to acknowledge.

Okay. So anyways I rambled on enough :uhoh: but Chris don't give up I hope everything goes by quickly I know waiting sucks but I guess it's gonna be part of the game from now on :cuss:...If you have any questions let me know. Oh and just to help you out with one issue I had because the papers were a bit confusing make a Money order for $19.25(Fingerprints) another for $35.00(Temp. Permit) and another for $35.00(That sexy white plastic permit)...

Again Good Luck!

Why should the wait for fingerprints be different between bus and gun?  Unless the Chief is conducting his interview at the same time.  As long as the fingerprint card is done correctly I don't think it matters who does it.

He's lying to you.  We use the same FBI :) and the process generally takes 45 days or less in Virginia to actually put the permit in your hand.

It sounds to me like some are using the appointment to get fingerprints as a way to limit the number of permits issued - limiting to three a week - WTF!

You only need the 2 money orders for SPD.  The State police will take a check, they know where you live if you bounce the check on them.

**Jump Master** Chief doesn't do interviews here we don't have that or the references crap. I wish it were faster for those that are about to embark on the trip to get their permit hopefully things will change though!

**Grape Shot** Yep I know he was lying to me that's why I am the proud owner of my plastic permit now. Yes so far Stratford from what I have heard and experienced is the worst, time wise.

**Gold Coaster** Yea I just used money orders was easier for me I guess, stop at Wal*Mart and tada done hehe

Stratford is horrible in general IMO, To many cops on the  "edge":what: waiting for something to pop off on Wood End Rd or something. I've been here 11 years way to many tools. A nice town none the less great place to grow up but other than that blah.

Alright I am done with my ramble I tend to do that when I just want to vent or am really bored and things come straight to mind and I type them. Take care yall drive safe if you plan on going somewhere tomorrow/tonight!

Thank you everyone for the input. Sorry for the latency with my reply.

Great suggestions, perhaps I will try to speed up the process. Although, today I bought my first firearm! A Ruger 10/22, should keep me busy for a while and hold me over until my print appointment! :)

I will update this with my process and if I get anywhere earlier. Thanks for the help especially, Joe. I appreciate it!

If getting fingerprints done for employment purposes can be taken care of at any time, yet the same fingerprint process for a firearms permit is limited to only three per month, isn't it time someone takes the police department to court for violation of equal protection?

Certainly seems that way.  Since they are getting paid to do it either way they should do them on a walk-in basis.  If someone gets arrested they seem to have time to fingerprint them.

I called this morning to make my fingerprint appt...APRIL 7!!! WHAT??? I asked can't I go somehwere else? NO!??? Really? Ok...made the appointment. My husband called Middletown...was told that yes I could be able to get fingerprinted somehwere else, but they told him to call the Chief of Police in Stratford. So, I called and left a message. 2 hours later, I called the Deputy Chief. This time spoke to an admin. She said she got my message (for the Chief), and wanted to know exactly the problem. I told her I wanted to know why it takes 2 months to get fingerprinted, and why I can't do it somewhere else and just bring it in. She said she would have someone call me back. So, finally 2 more hours later the Commander called. Said that they are SO backed up. I asked if I could get fingerprinted somewhere else. He said it wouldn't matter, because the detectives process each application as they do the fingerprints, so if I brought it in with fingerprints, I would still have to wait until they were able to get to it, after everyone else in front of me.

So, seems I am between a rock and a hard place...just like everyone else :cuss:I"m not sure what else to do, but maybe I will keep calling numbers.

Sounds like you Stratford residents need to get in touch with your Police Commission Chairman and have this matter brought forward to the next meeting.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will look into that (I'm not sure how to contact some of these people.) My biggest worry is angering someone that may possibly cause my permit to be denied, because the way it was explained to me was that the Chief determines who is 'suitable' for permit. So, does that mean I can meet all of the requirements, but still be denied??? :banghead:

Unfortunately the Chief isn't very happy either, the rank and file voted 83-10 no confidence in him due to some very shady going's on at the SPD.  His brother is the town attorney and it's all very incestuous.

That's one of the really sad parts about this town, the town government.. it's absolutely the @#$%s.  The mayor is a tinpot dictator, he's fired anyone that's stood up for whats right versus what the mayor says is right.  He's opened up the town to numerous lawsuits including one by his younger brother who was being fast-tracked into SPD even though his psycohological profile said he showed deception and a lack of comittment.

I don't know how you'd get some changes made there.  A call to the cheif might help, a sitdown with the mayor at one of his "meet the mayor" sessions.  The mayor packs heat so he might be an advocate for you but I wouldn't hold my breath.

I'd call the SFLU and see what they say, if it meant a drive up to Middletown to do the prints if might be worth it.. I'm not saying they would but they are the "law" as far as the state permits go.

I got mine in the middle of last year and my appointment took a month just to get printed.  With the bad economy and worry about the gungrabbing obamessiah getting sworn in the demand for permits has gone way up and the SPD is not accomodating the increased demand with increased opportunities to get printed.

Good luck!

I had a great expirience at the Stratford station. Definitely some real nice guys down there, and extremely down to earth and sociable. I couldn't have asked for a smoother appointment.

Now just to wait another 8-12 weeks!!! :)
