After reading a bunch of the latest posts here lastnight, I mustered up enough onions to actually open carry beyond my backyard today.
I put on my blue CCDL shirt, tucked in cargo shorts, and strapped on my SP101 with a thumb-break OWB holster. I went to Target in Waterford with my wife and kids and shopped for 30 minutes. The store was full of people but nobody seemed to notice or care about me and my exposed revolver. Perhaps (if anyone noticed) they assumed I was off-duty LE....I dunno.
Then went to Abbotts in Noank http://www.abbotts-lobster.com/ for lunch for about 45 minutes on the waterfront sitting and walking around with the kids....again lots of people but nobody seemed to notice...despite even the few I made small talk with in line and at the picnic tables.
Having my wife and kids with me I'm sure helped take away any public suspicion....it at least calmed my own nerves. The first 10 minutes at Target was scary though....I suppose its probably like feeling naked in public....having your firearm exposed for the world to see for the first time.
The heart rate came back down after those first 10 minutes. I feel great now that it was a successful experience. I hope this may be an encouragement to others considering OCing for the first time. I thought long and hard about what to wear and what to say if challenged and even what to do with my hands....I carried a drink with me just to keep them occupied.... I probably am overthinking this whole thing...but whatever...I will OC again soon.
Perhaps with more such experiences...the trend will grow.

I felt the same way for CC. But, now I am getting used to that. Not quite up to OC yet. But, I advocate it.
I will get there. Just need time. And, carrying around friends and getting them used to you carrying. That's is what it is all about, getting comfortable.Last edited on Tue Sep 15th, 2009 03:20 am by atrule

Great to hear it!
I'm sure I'll have the same experience once I get my permission slip from the state (since EVERY type of carry is concealed in Ms)
I'm jealous cause I have to wait

Great to hear!! I just got an OWB holster for my Glock 21 last week. Still considering when I might actually use it with a tucked in shirt.

Scott do you have a permit for VA? They do not offer reciprocity to CT..At least according to Handgunlaw.us they don't.

Bridgeport Shooting Range does a Utah permit class every so often. That's relatively easy to do and they print you right on the spot. I have my Utah permit which is good in as many places as Florida.

Ya we were planning on attending the last class they offered. We unfortunately missed it. We will have to look into the next one. I believe that Jamie had told us once a quarter they offer it.

I don't know how you did that but it was pretty ballsy. there is no law against an open carry but supposedly you should not carry in a public place . got this from CT's latest law on carrying. Really surprised that no liberal called the police.
"A permit to carry a pistol or revolver is required to
carry a handgun on or about one’s person, either openly
or concealed, or in a vehicle. However, the Connecticut
Board of Firearms Permit Examiners (which reviews
denials and revocations of permits) cautions that “every
effort should be made to ensure that no gun is exposed
to view or carried in a manner that would tend to alarm
people who see it.”

You state that you got this from and I quote "CT's latest law on carrying" Then you paste info that was on there from " The Connecticut Board of Firearm Permit Examiners".
I hope that you realize that this board does NOT make the LAWS. There is NO law in the state of CT that says anywhere that you must CC your weapon.

hciaffa,
I am aware of many statments contained on the Board of Firearms Permit Examiners website, together with the sections of State Law that pertain to Permits to Carry Pistols and Revolvers.
NOWHERE DOES THE LAW STATE THE INFORMATION YOU HAVE POSTED.
If you would provide a link to the informaiton, someone will be able to respond with additional information.
The Board remvoved similar languagewhich was contained in their FAQs in September of 2007. The were challenged to cite the authority for what was posted on their website, and could not find any laws or regulations to support what was posted at the time.

Ballsy indeed. Excellent story krusader!
I wouldn't worry too much about people calling the police. It's unnatural for a fellow citizen to perceive you as a threat unless you're actually doing something threatening. If you're confident, polite, and you have a pleasant look on your face it probably helps.
In my opinion it is much more likely that the police will just happen to see you somewhere than that they'll be called.
Remember - you aren't breaking any laws.

Since I first posted, I've OC'd around the neighborhood walking with the kids for an hour, have gone to the local convience store a couple of times, and spent an hour at Cows and Cones having ice cream with the fam.
The only mention of the firearm was by the guy manning the register at the convienence store. He asked me if I was working and pointed to his strong side where I wore my revolver. I replied that I wasn't working, "but yes, IT works" (smile, courtesy talk: good morning, thanks, have a good one, etc.)
He didn't seem to care... (not sure how good his english was)

I've open carried several times at Wal*Mart in Wallingford with no issues, although I must say that I used the side garden entrance (usually going in to look for ammo and/or buy fishing stuff) and I ALWAYS watch people; if I ever saw a real negative reaction, I would've quickly and descretely made me way out and back to my car. Now, I've done it dressed in business casual AND in camo cargo shorts with a black fitted tank top and never got a reaction either way.
You bet it is scary the first several times you do it but ALWAYS be vigilant in observing for reactions just in case. And, if you haven't read my post "police take my license", you can see what happened when LEO actually saw me open carrying here

| I open carry all the time and i look nothing like a police officer but i also dont look like a thug. I OC in danbury, bethel, ridgefield, norwalk and anywere i stop in between. After the James Goldberg Case at chillis and a seeing how he go his permit back and has a lawsuit against that police department with a letter from DPS reinstating his permit i dont think the informed police officers want to really get wrapped up in that kind of paper work for nothing.. Keep Carrying openly Connecticut its our right!!!!
