I have 6 kids, age 11 years down to 2 weeks old. I OC everyday, everywhere I can. The kids don't care at all. I have explained to them (according to what each age would understand) that I have the right to do so. They don't even notice anymore. In fact I don't think MOST people even notice either!
I would highly suggest an active retention holster for reasons stated already.

Warren v. District of Columbia (444 A.2d. 1, D.C. Ct. of Ap. 1981) is a case in which three rape victims sued the District of Columbia because of negligence on the part of the police. Two of three female roommates were upstairs when they heard men break in and attack the third. After repeated calls to the police over half an hour, the roommate's screams stopped, and they assumed the police had arrived. They went downstairs and were held captive, raped, robbed, beaten, and forced to commit sexual acts upon one another and to submit to the attackers' sexual demands for 14 hours. The police had lost track of the repeated calls for assistance. DC's highest court ruled that the police do not have a legal responsibility to provide personal protection to individuals, and absolved the police and the city of any liability.[1]
last year I worked a unit that held mainly sex offenders.
they would brag about their crimes. some even taunt their victims by calling them
from the prison..
This story strait up makes me sick, and enrages me that any person could do this. This is why I make it a habit to OC without failure around my home, and both OC/CC whenever possible when I leave my home. I will not allow my family to be victims.

I agree. My wife has made fun of me when I come home and have been in the house for a while and didn't take the weapon off the belt. I'm not paranoid. You never know when an idiot on crack is going to kick in the door. Will it ever happen, odds are no, but that doesn't mean it can't happen. I rather be prepared for something that might not happen, than not be prepared when it does. I don't have kids, but I carry to protect myself and my wife.
The BG's are getting smart. There was a story here in the Boise area where a guy watched mom leave the house for the day, he had noticed kids in the backyard screaming while playing. Now if the house next door hears the kids yelling, and the guy hops the fence, what happens next. The kids scream as they are getting yanked into the house. Do you think anyone hearing the screams thought anything of it. The BG knew this and did the crime in brouad daylight.
My wife knows the guns in the house, where they are and that they are always loaded. She knows to just pull the trigger if need be. Kids, if old enough should know gun safety in the case they need to use it. At what age is safe, don't know. But kids if aware of what they are, will not be so curious. Ofcourse they should be locked up if young kids are present.

I usually keep my gun on my belt or at least have a firearm within arm's length. Right now, there's a S&W M&P .40 just under my keyboard and others are where they need to be.
Maybe I am paranoid, I thought I was just prepared.

Great info on guns and kids.
Armed 24/7 even in church or in bed.
My 4 year old OC with me. I live in liberal Moscow and have had people tell me and my son that guns are bad. His reply is to tell them "people are bad and not guns". "Guns are good like batman." Classic

interesting read. But the police "took four guns from the house". I certainly hope those were the bg guns.

The survivor of the four guys appears to have confessed to breaking in with the intent to steal one of the home occupants dope stash. Be that as it may, only a small quantity of drugs were found in the home and the man who fired the shots has not been charged at this time.
They possessed three pellet weapons and one real gun among them.

I think the question of should you has been answered... but you'll have to be prepared with kids in that age group... prepared for the odd comments! Heres a few from my 3 yr old son...
*while in walmart checkout* "Daddy is that a bad man?" (points to guy behind us) "you have your gun right?"
*while helping him go potty at Lowes, and people in 2 other stalls* "daddy, is that your little gun" (yup) "no it's not, it's your BIG GUN" (ok buddy) "ya...you shoot the bad guys with it right" (yup) "daddy is that a bad man over there?" (one guy laughs, the other leaves in a hurry...)
