Do they really have an "assault weapons ban" in Cook County?

Yes effective November 14, 2006, A Cook County gun ban Ordinance criminalizes the otherwise lawful possession of many common firearms and large capacity magazines. The law provides for imprisonment of up to 6 months, fines, and confiscation and destruction of the enumerated weapons.

Over 60 firearms are specifically listed as being illegal, including the deer rifle popular in may Midwest states, the SKS with a detachable magazine.  Popular self defense weapons like the Mossber 500 pump, and popular target shooting semiautomatic AR-15 is also illegal. In addition, all magazines that can hold more than 10 rounds are banned.

Lets face it Cook County is screwy.  There are no restrictions for the rest of the state unless it is a local ordinance, (this is normally a "north of Interstate 80 thing) class 3 firearms are illegal.

I live a long distance from Chicago, thankfully.  South of Interstate 64, where I don't know of any local ordiances against specific firearms.

In the last election 2 counties down here had a resolution on whether the state should pass LTC legislation.  One got 84% yes votes, the other 84% yes, which illustrates the difference in this part of the state and Cook County.  You can't legally carry pepper spray in Chicago.

That really sucks, because Chicago is my homeland and all my family be there and thing.
Yet, what am I supposed to with my collection when I get back from the Marine Corps?

I hope they sort some stuff out in Illinois by the time I get back.

Oh I'm sure they'll sort some stuff out. More restrictions and harsher penalties. I feel for those of you that live in crook county. I would not be able to live there. If where I lived started passing laws like theirs I would sell my house and jump state.

My wife 'n her mom 'n 6 siblings are from Chicago area. Only 2 of them 'remain' in IL. 'Bout every 3rd person I meet in AZ of late is from IL.  Do yourself a huge freedom favor 'n don't return there when you leave the Corps. I can kick myself in the can for every day I wasted in MD after I retired from the Navy instead of relocating here to begin with. Illinois government... particularly 'Crook' County is a tyranny you should avoid.

yes do as the above poster said, do not return.

When I left Cherry Point and got out of the USMC I did not return to IL.

About a year to 9 months start looking for jobs, you can still live close in neighboring states though

Its great in UT. Compared to IL or NC, its very dry and hot, but winters can be cold and very snowy.

I work on Hill AFB with the skills I had in the USMC. I did avionics in the Marine corps.

As far as oc and cc here, its really good, I did have a run in with a state park ranger but he called in my oc to check to see if it was ok, and ofcourse it was.
