This is my first post but I have been lurking around for about a year. I have oc'd around my small town of St Albans for a while without any problems. So after reviewing the many responses on here pertaining to questions about maine laws and walmart corporate policy yesterday, I got in my truck and made my usual run to Newport with my 3yr old daughter. Had to stow my pistol unloaded while in truck, dont have CCW yet . Loaded my Makarov an holstered it strong side in a fobus paddle and walked in. Greeter welcomed me and gave my daughter a smile sticker as usual. Went thru the garden section, ammo (just looking), pharmacy, groceries, then to the checkout. As far as I know no odd looks the cashier definately noticed, she was looking at it while I loaded the belt. But did not seem uncomfortable about it. Greeter said have a nice day and I did!! I look forward to carrying more.
All in all a non event.

Your daughter most likely contributed to mollifying the usual anti-gun hysteria that Wal-Mart employees have. They likely assume the "evil" gun toters won't attach ourselves to our children before walking into their store.

That may be true. I am there all the time with my daughter, I stay at home during the day to take care of my youngest. I am a welding contractor, so I schedule all my work when my wife gets home. Therefore my daughter goes everywhere with me. The guys at the gun shop love her, she gets all the attention from them whenever we go. Which is about 1-2 times a week, to chew the cud.

Well, I have grown very comfortable with oc everywhere. But one issue really bugs me. I am getting tired of disarming and clearing my pistol every time I get in the truck. Which brings me to a question. In a vehicle, w/o a CCW, What is the proper procedure for securing your firearm. Does it have to be unloaded and out of reach or can it be loaded but in plain view? I cant seem to find anything on this.

I'm really glad you asked this, as I'm still a little fuzzy on this as well. From what I understand its unloaded if you can reach it or locked in the trunk, if it is in the reach it must be in plain sight. I only have a couple more weeks till my CCW gets here so its not that big a deal for me but its very annoying as I carry a revolver.
Get in the car remove the ammo, place ammo back in the speed loader and then drive off. Maybe its just me but I just feel like if someone see's me sitting in my car out front of the grocery store loading a gun I'll be more likely to have someone freak out and make the dreaded "theres a man with a gun" call.
I'd much wrather keep it on my hip or just toss it on the dash and be done with it.
I'll be watching this thred to see if anyone has any insight

That is exactly how I feel. I don't think I should have to try to hide my gun at any time, and while loading I need to do it discreetly and quickly. I really hate that part.

Yes I did thank you. I called the sherrifs dept earlier today and have yet to hear back. I doubt they will have anything more than that.
