I'm relatively new to handgun ownership and just recently learned that OC is legal here in Maine. However, I've heard mixed infomation concerning authority and regulation concerning the practability of OC.
I'm sure most people won't blink an eye concerning my firearm, but I wanted to gather some opinions on an idea that I had been rolling over in my head: I am not well known to the town police, so what if I were to call them up to give them my name, description, etc. and informed them of my intent to carry should they recieve a phone call from another concerned citizen?
Is this feasible or would it be a hassle trying to explain my reasoning for wanting to OC in the first place?
I'd appreciate any tips, thanks!

Wouldn't be my suggestion... you have nothing to gain.
I'm not suggesting anything 1984-ish, but I can pretty much guarantee that unless you're personal friends with the Chief of your town, or related to one of your town's leo's, it will either get put in a file somewhere no one will read, or get put in a file somewhere that'll be read if anything ever happens concerning you.
You did the right thing asking in your own state, and hopefully others more local to you will be able to give you the local climate OC-wise.

| as a fellow mainer i would not recomend this action either. i oc for 3 months in bangor area before i was arested in brewer. after that i was told to notify each town befor i enter it (so they dont get the wrong idea) and all that did was cause alot more problems. i found that it is best if you just do it and explain it when they stop you. oh and for the record i open carried for about 9 months before i went and got my concealed weapons permit and i was only arrested that one time (no charges) but was stoped so many times it wasnt funny, most of the time the cops were rather rude but i was only 23 at the time so all they saw was a young punk with a gun.

You should never feel that you have to notify or request permission to exercise your rights. The fact that you feel you need to do this indicates that you should re-examine your motivations and convictions carefully before you take any action. Also, research your local and state laws thoroughly, so that you know them better than the "authorities". I'm not trying to attack you, but you should really think this through before making a decision.
Good luck, and carry with pride and assurance!
