my fiancee is going to go to photography school in MA after she graduates college. and im going to stay there with her for the 10 months of schooling, and i was wonderiing about age, places off limits, and the basic laws of OCing in MA

To even own a handgun in Ma you need to have a license. If you get the top of the line license, (forget what it's called, Class A maybe?) while you "technically" could open carry, from what I understand your first encounter with any LEO would result in a phone call to the issuing authority and the immediate revoking of you license. It is at their discretion.
Looks life 10 months of CC, if you get the license.

Mass gun laws, while not quite as bad as Chicago/NYC, makes California ones look wimpy. Registration, FOID, registration of ammo that you purchase, limited magazine capacities. I used to live in CT, and commute to MA. Never would live there. My suggestion is that you leave them where they are, and just pray for the 10 months that you are there. Getting a CC permit is darned hard as well, and if you did get it, it would be about the time you are leaving.

MA gun laws are among the worst in the nation. If her school is close enough to one of the borders, you might see if you can live in one of the surrounding states. Based on my impressions from what I've read here and seen on sites like handgunlaw.us NH is pretty good, VT is awesome, RI is okay (it's a shall-issue state, though you have to be 21), and even CT and NY (outside of NYC) are a little bit better than MA.
If her school is in Boston or somewhere else in the interior of the state, you might as well leave your guns with your family in Utah.

| Depends on where in Massachusetts you go. In most of western Mass it isn't hard hard to get a class A LTC. But I wouldn't open carry in any urban area. I get away with open carrying around my apartment and taking out the trash. That is until some of the neighbors got nervous and bitched to the maintainence guys about it. The only places off limits by law are schools and colleges. Most police stations are posted, then of course federal buildings, courthouses, prisons. Other than that you can carry just about everywhere, just keep it well concealed.

its 21.....i believe mass is like CT...and they don't issue a "concealed" permit.....but i know in mass you need a permit just to have a freaken handgun in your home...and an FID just to have a long gun in your home...oh ya...and you need a permit to carry pepper spray!!!!!..it really depends on what town??? some towns only give Class A permits...some cities won't even give a class b permit (lets you have a handgun in your home)Last edited on Tue May 27th, 2008 06:24 pm by buketdude

| Yeah some towns won't issue the class B LTC because they figure if you can be trusted to own a handgun then you can carry it. The class B permit is next to useless anyway, its good for possession only.

| It's 21. Before 1998 you could own a handgun at 18, not sure if you could carry it though.

Keep in mind this is one of those state where you could burn the American flag but you are not allowed to shoot at a silhouette, you are not even allowed to posses ammo or mags with out a license, if you know anyone that sells those lamps that are made out of those Military shells fired from a tank you also need a license to have that, weather the shells found at a shooting range empty or live you need a license, so welcome to Mass Backwards, the only thing I like about Mass is with an Unrestricted Class A LTC you are allowed to carry anywhere with very few places off limits. I also learned that the only way you may own Non- Mass compliant firearms in Mass is if you moved To Mass and you may bring oyu Pistols/Revolvers once you obtained you new Mass resident LTC but keep the Leo/Gov mags and NFA arms at the state you came from, Machine gun Licenses are not easy to obtain.

There is an excellent photography school in Seattle. Washington is much friendlier to your rights than Massachusetts.

I'm truly sorry to hear you have to spend 10 mo in one of the WORST states in the nation. Having lived there for a number of years, I know what I am talking about. I've never lived in Utah, but I'll bet the people are friendlier, the taxes are lower, the politics are less radical, the weather is better and your rights are better protected where you now live. Unfortunately, you will have to live in MA yourself to actually find that out. I would also second the notion of living in a surrounding state if possible. I wish I could have done that....
As someone else said, you need a permit to get pepper spray, and it can only be purchased in a FFL shop. REALLY! 
Some time back the general assembly in Boston put big orange TRIGGER LOCKS on the antique flintlock muskets that were bolted to the wall. REALLY!
You can't use any target that even remotely looks like a human being, not even a crude silhouette. It is against the law to have such targets, and the range officer will demand you put them away or destroy them. REALLY!
I understand you want to bring your guns, but I don't think you'd get much chance to enjoy them while you're there anyway.
If you need to scare off an attacker, just pull out a full-color photo of Ol' Teddy, in all his bloated, coarse, drunken splendor. If that doesn't immediately induce projectile vomiting in your assailant, I don't know what would.
Your happiest day will be the one when you see MA recede in your rear view mirror. I wish I could be a bit more sanguine about your upcoming move, but I can't. Good luck, man!
