Would like to hear from others that are actively OC'ing in the Springfield area.  Am in the process of acquiring concealed carry but will hate to have to always try to wear clothing that will cover my firearm.

Anything specific to keep an eye on?  What are local reactions in areas that are unfamiliar with you personally?

Thanks for all responses!

Hi, its been a long time since I have posted I work in Iraq. I'll be coming back to the Springfield area in May and will be OCing.

As a heads up, it used to be legal to open carry in Ozark, Mo, but now you need a CCW permit to open carry, isn't that what they call an oxymoron?

This is the source:

http://codes.sullivanpublications.com/ozark-slp/

SECTION 215.250:     WEAPONS -- CARRYING CONCEALED -- OTHER UNLAWFUL USE
A.     A person commits the offense of unlawful use of weapons if he/she knowingly:

     1.     Carries concealed upon or about his/her person a knife, a firearm, a blackjack or any other weapon readily capable of lethal use;

     2.     Sets a spring gun;

     3.     Discharges or shoots a firearm;

     4.     Exhibits, in the presence of one (1) or more persons, any weapon readily capable of lethal use in an angry or threatening manner;

     5.     Possesses a firearm or projectile weapon while intoxicated;

     6.     Openly carries a firearm or any other weapon readily capable of lethal use;

     7.     Carries a firearm, whether loaded or unloaded, or any other weapon readily capable of lethal use into any school, onto any school bus, or onto the premises of any function or activity sponsored or sanctioned by school officials or the district school board.

D.     Subparagraphs (1), (6) and (7) of Subsection (A) of this Section shall not apply to any person who has a valid concealed carry endorsement issued pursuant to Sections 571.101 to 571.121, RSMo., or a valid permit or endorsement to carry concealed firearms issued by another State or political subdivision of another State

I am new to OCing and to this forum.  As such I was wondering if there is a OC group in springfield or in the surrounding area.

I am not necessarily a group, but I do open carry in Springfield and some of the surrounding areas frequently and have for most of this year and its not really a big deal.  In fact a friend of mine asked me what it was like and if people gave me odd looks or anything.  I told him that if someone were to open carry looking for some kind of reaction, they would probably be a bit disappointed.

In fact today was the first day that someone had said something to me about my firearm.  I was at the Wal-Mart on 64 and Kansas Expressway and was checking out and noticed the cashier lady looking at me, my wife and 2 kids and then at my glock.  As I was getting ready to pay, she asked me, "So what do you do?" I told her that I was a project manager and then asked her why?  She said, "Well most people don't bring their guns shopping with them."  I acknowledged her answer then said, "Well, maybe more people should."

Been a while since OCed in Springfield? Don't go there very often. But when I did never had an issue. Carried in the mall and various stores.

I might, but it is pretty seldom I go home. And Rolla is a bit on the edge of being in the South Central.

I am new to Missouri, I am in Ozark. Just to be clear, I am under the impression that OC is legal here without a permit, and CC is by permit only. Is that a fair assumption? Any response is appreciated. Thanks, Mike;)

Never assume.  Always verify.  This link will answer some of your questions...except for the obvious one of why does a person need a CCW permit to carry openly!

Thanks for the info, it is very helpful. Yes, doesn't make a lot of sense, but helpful.
