(2/18/2009) By James Wilcox - City leaders in Hastings discuss the idea of lifting the city's ban on carrying concealed weapons. The issue was talked about at this city council work session tonight.

Hastings has had its ban since 1973.

Attorney General Jon Bruning does not believe bans are valid. Statewide people are allowed to carry concealed weapons with a permit. The Hastings Police Chief addressed council tonight. He said he doesn't have a problem with conceal carry but does not think lifting the ban would be a good idea.

Council didn't make any final decisions.

City leaders say they want to wait and see what happens on the state level before making any moves. A few weeks ago Kearney lifted its ban one that had been in place for decades.

All Hastings's city leaders ahve to do is look around the nation. Plenty of evidence that CC does not pose a threat to the safety of cities.

They just got over ridden by a higher decree.  The Governor signed the bill into law that prohibits cities from enacting tighter regulations over firearms, (pre-emption) as well as a dialogue with the AG for resiposity with other states.
