My wife and I are heading to Middletown to see my sister tomorrow for a few days and we'll check out NYC while we're there. I'm sure that carrying around my Hi-Power (or any firearm) is a no-no in both NJ and NYC but for the trip there and back, is there anything I need to do in the car once I drive over the state line?
I have a lock box but would that be of any use as far as having the gun available yet locked up? Any suggestions on carrying a weapon and having it available should I need it while staying within the law or am I just out of luck once I leave Virginia? I assume my CC permit from Virginia is completely worthless.

| I would leave the shootin' irons home... NYC especially. Guns are tools... If the tools must be locked up... unloaded... ya-da-ya-da... 'n you can't use 'em anyway... Why risk the consequences? You're entering a foreign landscape... hostile... irrational mindset goin' on with those yankees.

As I understand the law, it is not legal for you to have a gun in NJ (even unloaded and locked up) unless you have a NJ firearms purchaser Identification Card.
Leave your gun at home.

In addition to my son and his family, I have several friends in New Jersey that I'd like to go see.
I refuse to leave home unarmed, so paying them a visit is out of the question.
What a horrible state.

I just went home to NY and visited family in NJ. I took my 870 Magnum to shoot at my parents house. I carried it unloaded in the trunk every night to our motel room and then loaded it in the room. It was a major PITA but at least I had it. After reading the NY and NJ sections of this forum I wanted to stop at the VA border and kiss the ground. Gun laws aside from what I saw and heard in NJ they over regulate EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Basically, it sounds like you can carry an unloaded, cased firearm into NJ for purposes of sporting or target shooting, or if you are just passing through. Get your sister to arrange a "sporting event". Don't speed, drive agressively, talk on your cellphone, or drive in the left lane unless passing. Only way to be really sure is to leave the gun at home. I grew up in NJ. Most people there only see guns on TV or on cops.
I wouldn't even think of transporting it into NYC.

Being a native New Yorker, I am glad to now live in Pa. for this very reason. Having a firearm in NJ is almost as bad as having one in NY state, if you are not from either state. My dad has a NY permit to carry, but it is still no good in the city limits. NJ cops make up their own laws so I would also not carry into that state either unless you are going to a range. Just my .02 cents. IANAL

I made it back from NYC last night, by way of MD, DE, and NJ, spending most of my time in NJ. I wish I could have stashed my weapon at the VA border and picked it up as I crossed back into the state. No incidents but it's just crazy that it has to be this way.
My wife and I visited the Empire State Building and ran into an unexpected security check complete with X-ray and a metal detector. I realized that I had to do something with my Columbia Knife and Tool pocket clip knife that I had in my back pocket. I didn't know this was going to happen until after we had been in line for an hour already. Crazy!
I have a prosthetic leg so I stashed it inside my sock, under the pneumatic shock of my ankle. I had to walk carefully because during every step, as the heel compressed, the cylinder bottomed out against my knife. Once we were well past the security and back in the midst of the serpentine waiting line I put it back in its proper place with no damage to the knife.
It's just wrong that a law abiding citizen cannot legally protect him/herself these days.
BTW, Ground Zero was very awe inspiring but I'm glad to be back in Ol' Virginny.

I called the NJSP about a similiar situation. My inlaws live in NJ and I wanted to transport my guns(locked in the trunk) to my inlaws and maybe go target shooting since they have several ranges nearby. I was told that I would be "rolling the dice," if my intention was going to NJ for a visit and got stopped. The guy told me I could basically come straight there, to a range or shooting competition, turn around and leave immediately, and not stop anywhere along the way. The SP may not put the screws to you, then again maybe they would. Their laws are so poorly written and vague, the law can be interpreted at will by an officer.
You're OK to travel THROUGH NJ with guns in the trunk, but once you stop to visit someone all bets are off. You're best bet is either leave the guns at home, or go through NJ and don't stop anywhere. You may want to print out a copy of the FOPA as well because it seems the NJSP don't know the Federal laws very well.

| If travelling through NJ with a firearm locked up according to the laws concerning interstate transport, will having hollowpoints get you into trouble even if they are not loaded into a weapon? Can they get you for just traveling through?
