Hey all, I was digging around everywhere to no avail to find the answer to this. At one time, it was legal to openly carry in NJ. At some point, that was made illegal. I'm guessing it was legal until the 1960's, but I can't confirm that. I only found a source that said NJ's only gun law before 1927 banned dueling.
Does anyone know the answer?

Imprecise question doesn't help. New Jersey did not technically "ban" open carry, it made it unlawful to do without a Permit to Carry. I believe that this law was passed in the late 1960's. Maryland passed a similar law in 1972 after the Baltimore race riots.

I don't know that New Jersey ever accepted OC, but would venture to guess sometime in the late 1960's, following the Newark riots, strict gun control legislation was passed into law.
I had moved from Pennsylvania to NJ in 1971 (Beeg mistake) and had to sell a S&W model 29 for rent money for my wife and I. I got $125 at a small gun store in Pleasantville. Owner told me that I could sell the gun, but could not buy one from him, due to Jersey's gun laws.
My residency in NJ was brief.

Yes, sorry for not being clear. At some point, NJ stopped distinguishing between open and concealed carry, and thus one needed a permit to carry one way or the other.
I have 2 cases from the 1920's in which people were convicted of carrying a concealed handgun without a permit, so I can guess OC was legal at that point up until the late 60's/early 70's. The Siccardi case in 1971 outlines the whole scenario that NJ folks have to go through for a permit even today.
