Baton Rouge, Louisiana January 21
We arrived early to hear Dr. Ron Paul speak today at the Bellmont's Great Hall. Yes, I was openly carrying, as I have done daily for appx. 10 years. The owner of the facility personally greeted me and inquired about the open carry issue. Once she was satisfied, we continued to wait for Dr. Paul's arrival along with quite a strong showing of Baton Rougeans. Due to the standing room only crowd, we stood alongside the wall and stayed there the entire event. Dr. Paul's reception was quite vocal, except for the two Mitt Romney supporters who stood quietly holding their signs. Halfway through the speech, I was asked to step outside into the lobby, where an East Baton Rouge deputy politely stated, and I quote, "you have every right to carry a gun, but Dr. Paul asked that you put it in the car until the event is over." Rather a strange request by someone who purports to support the second amendment. Instead of hiking to the back forty, I unholstered, unloaded and handed it to the deputy, told him that HE could hang onto it, I'll get it afterwards. Upon completion of Dr. Paul's presentation, I approached the same deputy who stood guarding Dr. Paul. There, within 10 feet of a presidential candidate, in plain view of the media and the appx. thousand folks standing in line to shake his hand, I was given my . 357 which I proceeded to reload. Afterwards, Dr. Paul turned and shook my hand while the greeting line waited. Dr. Paul's security chief apologized for the incident.

What a great outcome! It's good to see that at least ONE part of Louisiana really knows how to handle their busienss.

Possibly an over-zealous security officer, not Ron Paul himself which is why the security chief apologized later.

After the deputy said "DR. PAUL requested," we asked specifically if it was Dr. Paul or someone WITH Dr. Paul, to which the deputy with no name tag replied "Dr. Paul personally." Who knows. I'm just relaying what I saw and heard. At least there wasn't a swat team waiting in the lobby to take me down and hustle me off (AGAIN).

I think I saw you with your empty holster. I posted about this in the Louisiana forum already. It looked like about half the males in attendance were carrying concealed (myself included).
I find it bizarre that a man who speaks so strongly about personal freedoms and the rights of gun packing Americans would ask you to disarm at his rally.

As you came into the room, I was alongside the wall to the left, wearing a khaki cap and camouflage pants, khaki long sleeve shirt. Where were you? Wish you would have come over and introduced yourself. YES, I noticed quite a few carrying concealed. Some of those folks looked rather strange to me, LOL

Yes I must have noticed you right after the deputy took your weapon because you were walking back into the room and looked a bit upset. I saw the empty leather belt holster and thought "That deputy just took that mans gun." I was on that very front row when you walk in to the left at the end. Brown sportjacket with blue jeans. Young looking guy. I would have said hello if I had thought about it but was a bit caught up in everything else.
I'm just curious, how do you feel about Ron Paul now? Does he still get your vote? I agree with everything he says, but from the looks of it by asking you to disarm he doesn't practice what he preaches.

I'll still vote for him since I'm really not 100% positive just who "gave the order."
Besides, who else do we have?

Ron Paul did NOT request this. I know Ron Paul's brother and I have friends that are friends of Ron Paul. Ron Paul would not do this. He believes strongly about the people's rights.
I was at the 2A foundation conference in Northern KY last fall. Ron Paul gave a speech at the conference and Open Carry was prevalent. Local police and State police were there. Not one incident.
I don't think anyone trying something stupid would have gotten vary far.

I OC'd right up to Paul at that same conference in KY and shook his hand. The PO's didn't bat an eye. But then again, as was mentioned, everyone there had a gun.

I certianly dont have the answer or first hand knowledge or whatever, but it occurs to me that maybe the officer just said it was a request from Dr. Paul in hopes that the odds of you complying would increase....some people are crafty & ruthless, and Machiavellian.
If that is the case, he may have felt good about himself for being "successful", but end up doing more harm than good in the long run. Who knows?
edit - its hard to say when you cant put Mr Police Man and Dr Paul in a room together and try to get to the bottom of things. Meanwhile perceptions/opinions can take shape rightly or wrongly based on what (incomplete information) is known.

I have a problem in principle of voting for a personality - that the Bushes taught me. I don't want to repeat that mistake. I'll be gald to vote for RP if my party nominates him.

And if your party nominates Hitler?
Party loyalty is probably a major reason for this countries downfall.

It's very possible it was someone with RP. I have had some indirect and direct dealings with people from the campaign and there's a couple of a holes working for him.

The GOP has fooled me twice. Once while I was ignorant with Bush-41, shame on them, and twice with Bush-43 while I was looking, to my eternal shame. I will never vote for the GOP that can't keep their leader under control.
I will vote Constitution Party and I hope that it supports RP, but the figure head is less important than the principal's principles.
I would vote for Adolph Schikelgruber before Clinton/Hussein Obama/McLain et cetera ad nauseam.
If there is to be revolution then let it begin now while my grip is firm and my blood is still hot. Better me than my daughter.
The conspiracy of ignorance masquerades as common sense.
Either we are equal or we are not. Good people ought to be armed where they will, with wits and guns and the truth. NRA/GOP KMA$$ - their 'members' too (I got my 'member' hangin')

This sounds like someone was confused, most likely the deputy. If Ron Paul himself was concerned about you and your gun why on earth would they have allowed you to reclaim it and reload it within easy range of him?
I've never heard of him complaining about carry before. He might even view all of us 2a folks at his events as "bonus security."
I wonder what would happen if a bunch of folks showed up at a Hitlery or Ghouliana rally OC'ing
