Brand new to the forum and think it's great.

Unfortunately I just went for my Gun liscence in NY and am very unhappy with the NY State carry laws.

I'm an Ex-Police officer with the NYPD for 4 years ( I quit because of the money). And although I had  the ability to carry for 4 years, the NY state gun laws state that I am now only entitled to a target permit.

It just doesn't seem right. Especially since I locked up a lot of bad people that could be potentially dangerous to me and my family.

I had Edelmans Gun service do the paperwork for my Traget permit but according to them to get a concealed carry I would need to operate a cash business with Bank deposits over $2000 a week.

Does anyone know if there is anyway around this for Ex Police officers?

This just does not seem to make any sense.

Welcome aboard.  Now you know what ordinary people have to put up with.  Of course, in your case it's even more galling because you were permitted to cross over to the other side.

Come to Pennsylvania.  We don't have those problems.

Of course, you could always write to your elected representative in Albany.

I said BYE  BYE to NY 4 years ago -- too many liberals, taxes too high, too congested, etc.

Are you on LI? The permit application had to be TYPED - yes, please tell me if there are any more typewriters out there....

Never looked back.:celebrate

Sorry to hear what you're going through, Leabo.

You reside in one of the buroughs of NYC, right?

I don't think I can post a link that constitute commercialism, but if you'd like to remedy the situation with a sympathetic judge who may issue the order directing NYPD to issue you an "unrestricted" permit (which the rich, famous and politically connected gain with ease), I suggest googling the following keywords "pistol permit attorney nyc" and be sure to call to talk to a paralegal first to explain your problem with NYC authorities.

If they take the case, you would have to invest $$ in appeal, litigation and attorney fees, of course.

We have your back in sympathy. NYC is a seriously messed up place where the snooty elitists think their lives are so valuable that they protect themselves with bodyguards and own firearms while hypocritically denouncing gun ownership rights to impose draconian gun control, condemning 2nd Amendment that grants "right to keep and bear arms".

My first thought is why would you pay Edelman's or any other business to fill out your pistol permit for you? It's basically fill in the blanks.  Other than that, anyone who grew up in the city or surrounding area, should have realized at some point that the media and goverment is vehemently anti gun,  has hyped its anti gun agenda/propaganda and the notion of CCW is just not permissable. Because the state and city of New York know what's best for you. :X

Oh, if your looking for away around your predicament, rejoin the nypd or just get used to going without. Thank a NY politician

It's not just a NYC or downstate issue...we live on a 50 acre farm southwest of Albany...

My wife & I are current NYS Pistol Permit holders with restrictions to "hunting & target shooting".  The pistol permit instructor told us to fill in our application for “hunting & target shooting” so they would be approved because if we applied for “carry/concealed” they would most likely be denied.  He stated we could apply for an amendment to remove the restriction later.

Since it has been 4 years of having our pistol permits, we most recently applied for amendments to remove the restrictions to "carry concealed" and were notified via letter by Judge Joseph C Teresi (Democrat) that our applications were denied.

He stated that the restrictions don't infringe upon our 2nd amendment rights, that we have insufficient training (he has no idea of what training we have) to carry or use a concealed permit for personal protection and "in an exercise of his discretion, he does not find there exists proper cause to issue a carry/concealed pistol permit".

He references two cases: O'Brien v. Keegan, 87 NY2d 436 (1996) and Bando v. Sullivan, 290 AD2d 691 (3rd Dept 2002) for his justification.  It's interesting to read these two cases...

Forward everything to your state representative.  Ask him or her to explain why you and your wife are prohibited from being able to defend yourselves.

You still live in NYC?  Hmm, sort of surprised they don't let former LEO's carry there...  Did you only speak to a clerk or did you actually talk with a "higher up"?  I guess you could always try to fight it in court too, but that would cost a good bit of money.

A.  Don't use all capital letters.  It's considered the Internet equivalent of yelling, and is rude.

b.  Are you required in New York State to inform the police that you're carrying a firearm?  If you're not required, then ignore the question.  If you are required, include your firearms license when you hand over your driver's license.

Again, if there's no need to notify (and you do have to check this out), then, unless the concealed firearm has something to do with the police stop, don't tell them.  From what you said, the end result is going to be a felony stop if you either a) tell them, or b) don't tell them and they see the firearm.  If you don't tell them and they don't see the firearm, then it's less hassle for you.

Again, check out New York law to see if notification is required.  If it is, then include your firearms license with your driver's license.

Of course, you could always drive a little bit better to avoid getting pulled over for one thing or another, but that's a personal decision on your part.  Me?  I'd rather not pay traffic tickets.

Move a little bit south to Pennsylvania.  No notification requirement, open carry is legal, no hoops to jump through to get a firearms license, the license costs far less than what it does in New York, and there's no registration of firearms at all.

Thanks for all the replies.

Looks like I'll just have to settle with a Target Permit.

I guess I could have saved some money by doing the paperwork myself instead of Edelman's. Thought I might get it a little quicker by having them do it. At least they throw in free range use for 4 ranges for the first year.

What ranges do most people on this board who live in Nassau or Suffolk use?

Calverton?

Any 24 hour ranges?

There's an indoor rifle/pistol range in an industrial park just south of Wyandanch on the north side of the Southern State Parkway between Wellwood and Straight Path and (I think) route 109.  I think its called Old Bethpage Gun Club, but its not in Old Bethpage.  It backs up to the old garbage dump and there's a porno store across the street.  They have a credit card entry and you can go there most any hours.

However, I'm sure the Suffolk PD is wise to people who CCW on a 'to and from the range only' permit and have the range key and bullets and earmuffs in the trunk just in case they have to 'go to the range' on really short notice. (such as in the middle of a LEO encounter)

FYI

That must be a new range. I patrolled that area for many years, handled a few robbery calls at that adult store.  The local sector guys dont have problems with legal gun owners. Especially in that neighborhood. :D

No, the range has been there for years.  A small, very plain looking building with no signs, easy to miss because its all indoors and only a few peole go there at a time.

Many people in the area have no idea about the range even though they know everything else about the area.

I just went to Google Maps and its located on Kean Street off Edison Ave. (between Straight Path and Welwood.  Across from the porn store.  No I never went to the porn store.

As an EMT, I worked with many public safety professionals for many years.  All the conversations I have ever had with police officers in Suffolk were 110% favorable, and all privately went against the official BS of the department.

However the rules are the rules and I got out of Suffolk County, Long Island with my family and my guns and I could not be happier way upstate NY in the boonies.

I've heard of Neuvo-Rich and Neo-Conserviative I guess I'm a Neo-Redneck and I love it.

Food for thought for those who would prohibit guns because they [guns] are “bad,” or “evil” and “ordinary” people should not have guns.

I just don't understand how I have more rights in most of the US with PA, NH, and UT permits than I do in my home town, or state for that matter.  Totally FUBAR
