Hi, I will be attending a National Guard school from 1 June to 18 July in FTIG. How are the locals about open carry? I have my Colorado CHL, which is good in PA.

Are there any public ranges nearby? I try to shoot at least once a week.

Any info on the area would be great. Thanks

The locals tend to have opinions that vary person to person, just as with any place.

My advice on your desire to OC is go for it! It shouldnt matter where (besides Philly) and dont worry too much about it.

If confronted by the police inform them your in town for a National Guard school and that alone should calm things down.

For example. I was cruising with a friend and we hit a DUI checkpoint. My buddy has a 44 spcl sticking out of the center concole. He "Yes Sir no sir" everything they say. The cop chekcing the other lane leans over and asks him if he is in the military.

Yes sir Im an MP. The cop shakes his hand, thanks him very much, and waves us on.

Now as to the local ranges? Im gonna parrot Pa Shooter. Where are you going to be?

Fort Indiantown Gap. I looked at a map and it's near Harrisburgh. The Guard calls it FTIG.

I'm an old fart.  To me it's still Indiantown Gap Military Reservation (IGMR).

Here you go! This is a list of all the gun ranges maintained by the game commission. I go to SGL 300 in north east pa, its very nice!

http://www.pgc.state.pa.us/pgc/cwp/view.asp?a=480&q=161297

Looking at the map there is one in Dauphin, one in Cumberland, and one in Centre. Of course there may be more owned privately, or local rod and gun clubs that may be alright with a Guardsman using the range.

Hope it helps!

I am about 20 minutes from the GAP.  I shoot at Palmyra Sportsmen's Association and a couple of soldiers from the GAP and I get together regularly to shoot.  You're welcome to be my guest sometime to check out the club and see what you think.  Here's a link to their site:  http://www.palmyrasportsmens.com/index.asp

ETA: several people OC all over this area and nary a word is said.  Now if you're planning on attending any under six soccer games you might get some lip.... ;)

That looks like a super, fantastic facility.  What cost range?

Wish we had something like that near Richmond.

Wow, thanks for the info. I will have to take you up on that. I've only driven through PA never stopped there. I am looking forward to spending some time there.

Grapeshot, I think it's about 72.00 the first year you sign up and then something like 65.00 for renewal.  It might be more the first year and I just don't recall?  All I know is that covers your ENTIRE HOUSEHOLD and you get 24/7 access!!!  365 days a year!!!  WE LOVE IT!!!  With some of the hours my husband works there are nights I go out to the pistol range and shoot at 10 or 11pm.  I love it.  I have the place all to myself most of the time although there have been a few times I've met some other guys out there.  VERY nice place.

planedr, just shoot me a pm (no pun intended) and we'll get together for sure.  We can do an OC dinner too if you'd like.  :)

I, too, am a member of Palmyra Sportsman's Assc.  and it is a beautiful club, extremely well maintained and next to zero "riff-raff".  The dues are $85 initially, and $65 each additional year.  However, for the property that we have, the good maintenance, beautiful outdoor ranges, and the THREE  24hr 365 day/year indoor (including archery, pistol and smallbore rifle) ranges, (with heat and A/C) ... It's very well worth it.

Here in Pennsylvania, we are lucky to have so many reasonably priced gun clubs to join. I am currently a member of 3 local clubs, and there are many more around. The club I spend the most time at has a rifle range out to 300 yards, and a pistol range under a pavilion out to 35 yards. Theres plenty of room and dues are only $15 a year.

The Mechanicsburg Sportsman's Association is probably too far from "the Gap" (down I-81S on the other side of Harrisburg), but offers active duty military free membership. You might want to check if Palmyra Sportsman's offers the same deal, since it's closer.

Hi everyone! I made it, well I've been here for 2 weeks but just got reliable internet. The army never scrimps on any thing:quirky.

So far it's been really nice except for the rain. The school is very good.

I went to the gun show in Harrisburg last Sat and couldn't believe how very few people were there. Notrhing like Denver where it's a line to get in, a line to look at guns, a line for the bathroom a line for everything. And guns are about 20% cheaper here! Bonus. A nfriend and I went to a little place called Glens guns, A gun shop in his basement! Very nice old guy and my friend bought a XD9 sub compact for about 150$ less than he could have gotten it for in Denver.  Another good thing out here is the abundance of .40, it's everywhere, no 9mm but I don't have one of those. 9mm everywhere in Denver but no .40, maybe I could make some trades:cool:

I have no plans this weekend so if someone wants to get together for some shooting or anything else let me know.
congrats to the Penguins!

My calendar is pretty open if you want to go shoot at Palmyra.  Let me know!  :)  (yes, Glen's Guns is pretty popular.)
