PHILADELPHIA, PA – An off-duty police officer shot and killed a man he said tried to rob him just north of Center City this morning, officials say.
The officer, not identified, also was injured from being smacked in the face with a pistol, police said.
Details are sketchy, but police said the officer was driving his black Nissan SUV about 3:30 a.m. when he stopped on Willow at N. 7th Street, outside the Electric Factory.
The alleged robber somehow got into the car and hit the officer in the face, police said. The officer fired, hitting the man, who was later pronounced dead at nearby Hahnemann University Hospital.
Police found a pistol on the curb and money in the street, authorities said.
The officer remained at the scene for sometime after the shooting and TV news video showed him sitting in the back of a squad car holding a towel to his face.
Three hours later, officer’s vehicle was still on Willow Street, its headlights on. Crime scene officers placed yellow markers on the street, including one pointing to the handgun on the street.
Detectives from the Internal Affairs Unit and the Homicide Unit are investigating the shooting.

SPRING GARDEN - January 6, 2010 (WPVI) -- The man killed by an off-duty Philadelphia police officer early Wednesday morning in the Spring Garden section of the city has been identified.
Investigators say it all started at about 3:30 a.m., while the off-duty officer was in his black Nissan SUV near Seventh and Willow streets.
It is a section of the city where there is as string of old warehouses that have been converted into offices and restaurants.
Police say the 23-year-old suspect, identified as Al-Tariq Hutchinson of Edgewater, N.J., jumped into the officer's vehicle, demanded money and pistol whipped him across the face.
The officer pulled his gun and fired eight times, investigators said.
Hutchinson was taken to Hahnemann Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police say he had several prior arrests in New Jersey.
The officer remained on the scene for some time in the back of a police cruiser with towels to his bleeding face. He was then taken to Jefferson University Hospital to be treated for his injuries.
Police say a 22-year-old man was in a car with Hutchinson before the shooting, but that man may not face any charges. Police say he was in the car when Hutchinson got out and told him to keep the car running. Police tell Action News he will not be facing any charges in the case.
Moments later, he told police he heard gunshots. Seeing Hutchinson on the ground, he flagged down police.
That man was being questioned by police.
Investigators found a gun and a pile of money on the street.
Investigators say the off-duty officer -- a 55-year-old veteran of the police department's traffic unit -- told them he was just driving through the area when he was ambushed.
It is unclear why he was there. There are plenty of surveillance cameras in the area, and investigators are hoping they will be helpful in solving this crime.

Guess he shot until the aggressor stopped................moving.
Of course he may have been blinded by the pistol whipping.
Lots of possible scenarios here - will interesting to see how this plays out.

Does it really matter why he was there? I didn't realize somebody had to have a specific reason for driving down a particular street.

My first thought was that it was a drug transaction gone bad: the time of night, money on the street, Philadelphia cop.
Of course, who the heck knows given the media's inability to give a straight and complete story even if they have the information.
