Me and my family will be moving to south dakota come november at the latest, and was wondering where a good place to learn to shoot is at around the brookings area? I have fired guns before a 22 and a 38 but i am a crappy shot, and would prefer to learn to shoot correctly before i get myself a weapon, also what is the difference between open carry and concealed? i get the general jist of it but why would someone conceal there weapon? it seems so much easier to carry open which is what ill be doing more than likely, also if someone would not mind explaining to me what kind of handgun i would need to get it would be helpful, my wife is much more experienced in this area, as she grew up around guns and used them alot, also we have a 2 year old and she is pregnant with a 2nd baby, she wants to get a permit to carry a weapon as well what would yall recommend for her to get?

I live on the other side of the state so can't comment on where to shoot in the Brookings area. However, you will find we are a very gun friendly state and as soon as you make some new friends here you are sure to run into other shooters and concealed carry permit holders.

There are also lots of open places where you can shoot in this very rural state. I can shoot at an open, free and unsupervised range just a few miles from my home here in the Black Hills near Mount Rushmore. The county and state have ranges in many areas just for shooters and hunters who want to practice.

You can also easily locate ranchers who allow prairie dog hunting on their land with permission of course.

Welcome to South Dakota the last of the real old west. The freedom and responsibility state as far as I am concerned.

i live in sioux falls and during times of looking for places for myself the only low cost ranges i could find is either garretson gun club and they are very reasonable and other listings i could find other than ones that charge membership and rangetime fees were showing up near pierre

it seems like there is not much for ranges on the east side of the state that does not make you rent time by the hour along with membership fees

gary's in sioux falls memberships for an individual are like 125, 190 for family

isac walton i believe has an outdoor range,

the garritson gun club is probably the most affordable, runing i think only 25 dollars anual membership...

garritson is 30-40 min south on I-29 from brookings, 10 min north of sioux falls.

i frequent garys, runs between 30-40 dollars depending on what gun i rent and if its 1-2 boxes of ammo

rental total last week,

$42 for ruger gp100 4" barrel, 50 rds .357, 1 #2 sil.

the week before was $38 for s&w 9mm semi auto, 100 rds 9mm, 2 #2 sil.

garys also has a mp5 in .40S&W, full auto, havent shot it yet... but i drool on it every time im in there....its like 50 bucks to rent, 1 box ammo included... talk about the ultimate house gun... shoot.
