I would be interested in discussing holding an open carry BBQ this summer in a city park in the city of Rapid City.

The local authorities here need to become a little more educated regarding our state open carry laws. Recently there have been a few officer mistakes and misunderstandings regarding carry rights.

I would like to contact any folks in the Black Hills who are interested in a BBQ gathering this summer where we can show the citizens, police and newsmedia here that open carry is legal while showing we are upstanding citizens.

I currently have 6 to 8 people interested in participating. No firm date yet, just looking for people who want to join us if they can make it whenever it takes place.

I'm in Wyoming, but I'd be happy to come if I don't have a class to teach that day. Please post a date as soon as you can. Might be able to bring a few others.

And I would suggest inviting some of the police and local politicians to come meet with us there. Make it a friendly invitation. The old honey vs. vinegar thing... :)

Music? Old fashioned craft displays? What else might be organized to demonstrate that those who prepare to defend themselves are really ordinary human beings...

I'd suggest you not make this whole thing ABOUT the guns, but about ordinary people - who just happen to be armed - going about their business, enjoying the company of friends, and finding new ones.

I agree with your approach. This is just in the formative stage right now and I have never put anything like this together before. I want to do it right and make it a positive new item.

To a degree, it is a respose to the local Walmart concealed carry incident that just took place here in Rapid City.

I didn't hear about the WalMart thing. Do you have a link to the story?

I've open carried for years in that store without anyone saying a word to me. Have they put up "no gun" signs? I'm really interested since I do come in to RC to shop once in a while.

I'd say an invitation to the WalMart managers and employees would be as valuable as inviting some police and local politicians.

Let me know if I can help with organization. I've done a ton of it. :)

The news in the Rapid City area did not cover the story whatsoever. Not a mention. My adult son works part time at that Walmart (He is also carries regularly) while taking classes in criminal justice at USD.

My son was present and witnessed the incident first hand and talked to the guy who was physically taken down and detained. We filed a complaint with the Rapid City Police Department and are trying to locate the guy himself. When my son talked with him, he was in a hurry to meet the officers elsewhere to get his firearm back.

I want assurance from the Rapid City Police that my family members (we all carry regularly) are not in danger of the same treatment or worse from city officers.

Yikes! Too bad we can't get more of the story. There is probably a lot more to it we don't know.

But it sounds like all the more reason to tread lightly and make friends rather than challenge folks.

Anyway, let me know if I can help.

And I think I'll go to Spearfish to shop this time. :what:

Hello from Washington State!  My wife and I will be rolling through Rapid City at the end of June.  Would be fun to stop in and visit!

Anyway, we just finished an OC event at an apartment complex in the city of SeaTac (just south of Seattle).  Stemmed from a shooting there last month.  Anyway, we even had two tv stations come and do reports.  BOTH aired their reports on the local news.  The police also came and participated.

Here is the link to the story http://opencarry.mywowbb.com/forum55/23718.html

Contact DEROS72 in the Washington forum for information on how he got people involved.  He even got a major grocery store to donate and support the event.

Hang in there, as painful as it seems, this is the type of thing that will make people listen.  If it can happen here in a positive way, it sure as heck can happen in Rapid City!

John

I would be interested in attending your picnic (if yall will take east river folk)!

Ill keep watching here for dates and times.  We come through RC all the time on the way to Buffalo, WY to see the daughter and son in law.

Good Luck.

I have not forgotten about the open carry gathering. Hostle weather is a big problem here. Lots of blowing snow and can't even get out of the driveway.

I am looking towards something later this summer. Stay tuned for more.

I don't think anyone is pushing for a picnic right now, my friend! Sort of hard to light the barby in two feet of snow!! It's the planning and communicating that should be starting now, so we can get together before snow flies again! It's a bit of a narrow window in this part of the world.

Mid-June would be great :dude:

Did anyone see the Rapid City Journal article about the guy who shot himself in the drive thru at the Taco place ?  Accurately reported that he didn't need a permit because the gun was not concealed.  Who knows why he chose to mess with his gun while he was waiting for his taco? ended up at the hospital -

Yes, some good public appearances by the OC folks would be a good thing - count me in ~ :celebrate

I'd be interested in such an event. Granted I don't own a handgun yet, but I should be buying one soon. Just need to find a store that has the right one. :)

any updates now that we have a thaw?

How about end of June? Maybe Sat Jun 27?

Did someone say Buffalo Burgers & .45s ?

Just worked out a nice presentable open carry rig that makes me look more distinguished than I really am :dude:

We could do it in Custer maybe meet at Betty's and go somewhere from there for a cookout?
