Helicopters, riot shields, and hot dogs, oh my!

It's time once more for the annual Burke Lake Park picnic. This will be our third year running, we hope to see everyone there who can attend. This is a family event so bring the kids and dog. Lastly, this is not just for NoVA people, if you're not from NoVA you're just as welcome to join us for a fun day out in the park.

When: Saturday, June 27th 2009
Time: 1130-1500'ish or later depending on what people want to do
Where:Burke Lake Park http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/burkelake/
There is a small fee (per car) charged for park entry if you are NOT a Fairfax County resident. I think it's $8.

I'm new and don't know anyone, how will I find the group? I will be at the park starting at 1030, I drive a grey VW GTI with a Ham antenna on the roof. My cell is [seven ohh three three ohh three ate too too three] if you need to ring me. I have also made up a map showing where we will try to be, however spots at the park are first come, first served so we may not get the spot on the map.

OK, to pull something like this off we need folks to be responsible and on time. This means if you are bringing the soda, but you are late (or no show) a lot of folks aren't going to be happy with you.

Please use the thread below to RSVP (Please include accurate guest count so folks know how much food to bring. I'm not a mind reader, so indicate in your RSVP the number of guests (example: Billy Bob is attending, +4 guests, two of which are children) and state which items you'd like to bring. I will update the list of who's bringing what as things progress. You don't have to buy the fancy stuff, if you'd rather buy "Sam's Cola" instead of Coke because it's half the price, nobody will think anything of it. Make sure you bring some bug repellent, you'll need it! Also, some camp chairs come in handy because after we eat we'll sit around telling tall tales (and make fun of those who didn't come out) while contemplating eating more food or desert.

I've got plates, cups, plastic knives/forks/spoons & napkins for 50 covered.  Let me know if I need to up the number.

By then I should have hours of lies about the convention rehearsed and ready for an audience.

I'll look for the black helicopters and clouds of teargas if I can't find you by other signs & signals.

stay safe.

I was gonna say that's very nice but unnecessary, but the Ed sent me money directly to my email inbox before I could stop him! So, I can't argue, Ed is buying some condiments and whatever is left over I'll buy more buns or soda.

I am VERY interested in coming, but this requires some planning and research to see what directions the family is going at that time.  4 kids are usually going in different directions by the end of June, so we'll see what's up.  MidgetWith Glock will already be up in NOVA a couple weeks before that.  She may bring her "family" to the picnic.

I'll handle ONE bowl of potato salad (yes, I know the joke), LTO, and trays and chopping cutting trays/knives.  And the spatula and tongs.

And iced tea.

And probably more, depending on what's still needed as it gets closer.

Odds are about 50-50 I can be there - it depends on when we leave for New Hampshire (we usually spend the 4th up there).  I should know closer to the date.

Too soon to tell.  Spouse doesn't have his summer semester schedule yet.

Who's bringing the condiment gun?

I'd like to be able to come to it, but right now is too early to tell if I can because of transportation issues.

This is great, its on a day that I am off.  I'll get with my "Ball-n-Chain" and see what we will be bring.  If we need more Ice, I have access to several Ice Machines and large coolers.

We're in after the wee ones arise. Good thing we're all showing up, because as we know bad things don't happen in parks....

Assault at Burke Lake Park
West Springfield Police District – A 32-year-old womanwas assaulted on a wooded path between two parking lots at Burke Lake Park. The victim parked her car and was walking alone on Sunday, May 17 at around 4 p.m. A man walked toward her and punched her in the face. The victim was rendered unconscious for a short time. The suspect was gone when she awoke. She was not seriously injured.

The suspect was described as white, about 5 feet 7 inches tall with vivid, blue eyes. He was wearing black shoes, black, pleated pants and a black shirt.

Wonder if we'll get any of the bru ha ha as in the past as a result?

Not unless you fit that description and hide along the pathways.

They should actually welcome the group.
