My thought is that a sling is a normal way to carry a rifle when not hunting or preparting to engage targets - sort of like a holster is the normal way to carry a handgun.  I was not suggesting carrying rifles around just to cause a stir per se; a sling seems the way to go through when/if you are carrying a rifle.

The right to carry a long gun in public - use it or loose it.

1st negative reaction to oc.   I was OC'ing at Food Lion today as I do about 4 times a week in that store, and as I was going through the check out the cashier finished ringing my order and when she looked up noticed my weapon(talk about condition white).  In a real loud voice she said "I don't think you should be able to carry that."   Now I carry all the time and most of the times I don't even remember I'm armed, so for a moment I was perplexed as to what she was talking about. In the time it took to dawn on me that the weapon was the object of her displeasure, she continued in the same loud, if not louder, voice "Guns Kill People!".   At this point the couple of registers that they had open had all stopped what they were doing and I found myself the focus of attention.  I was trying to pay for my purchases and she was just standing there obviously waiting for a reply.  Now I realize that being the example for the gun carrying community this was my shining moment to educate an obviously ignorant member of the anti-gun community on the reality of firearms in todays society.  In fact two responses were simultaneously going through my head.  One was that I respected her opinion concerning her beliefs, but that guns did not kill people, people killed people, and that I appreciated her respect for my beliefs that I'm responsible for the safety of myself and my family.  Unfortunately I have been having a really, really bad day.  I responded  "You Know, I've had this gun for about 7 months and I haven't seen it do anything.  Do you think I should take it back for a new one?"    I apologize for letting the Open Carry community down by missing my chance to educate an unbeliever, but the look on her face was priceless.  Not to mention the laughter of the people around me.

Just thought I would pass this along.  I will try to be better!:banghead:

Classic!  I don't think you necessarily let the gun community down.  You may have pushed her more towards the anti-gun side, but since you got laughter from your immediate audience you could have pushed some of them more toward the pro side.  For the rest of their lives anytime they hear the argument that "guns kill people," they are going to remember that your gun doesn't do anything!

Had a negative OC encounter today, too.. Was on  way to Busch Gardens with family today... Stopped by McDonalds along Midlothian and N. Arch Rd. for some burgers... While waiting on line to place order, supervisor calls my attention and tells me guns are not allowed in this place...I told her, I don't see any signs posted prohibitting guns...She insists that no guns allowed...I was not in the mood for a discussion so I turned to leave...

Does anyone know if this is company policy?

Several people, including myself, have carried at McDonalds in Virginia multiple times without incident... manager was likely just "making it up" - possibly confusing a company policy against EMPLOYEES carrying while on the job with patrons carrying (this happens sometimes). I'd call and politely ask for the district managers name and number, and make sure you explain when speaking with the district manager or a company rep that in Virginia it is fully legal for those over 18 to openly carry a handgun if not otherwise precluded (if you don't say this, some people think you are asking the company to condone something against the law). Tell them you know people who have done so multiple times without a problem, ask that the manager be politely educated. I have open carried at the McDonalds in Glen Allen on Broad Street many times....

My usual response to the anti-gun crowd: "Guns don't kill people. Bullets kill people." :P

RLH2005 and I OC'd at Chili's at Virginia Commons.  The Chili's manager knew we were carrying, and of course our waiter, and not a peep.  When we walked in the door a teen boy asked if we were cops.  I just shook my head and ignored him after that.  I probably should have ignored him period.  No problems.

That's the time to say "No, we're just citizens.  Here's my card [hand out open carry education business card].  When you are 18 you can open carry like this without any license.  When you are 21 you can get a concealed handgun permit too.

Guess I need to get a set of cards made up.  Can you post what your card says?

I have an idea. Perhaps someone can design an open carry business card template on microsoft word or something, and upload the link to the message board. Having a card with a link to this site is a great way to inform others about open carrying, rather than just telling them about it. I have some bandwith left over for my website, so I'd be happy to host it. What do you guys think?

I spotted a guy on a very nice Honda motorcycle kind of open carrying on I-95 in Richmond this Sunday on my way back from Drill. It looked like a Sig or Glock and his untucked shirt that was under his riding jacket was flapping in the wind just enough to see it.

I always carry while riding, but normally carried concealed.  All motorcycle riders "fall down" sometime.  Some more than others.  I personally don't like the idea of the gun being in the open to get scraped up or fall off in a crash.  Plus it'll leave a heck of a bruise if you fall on it!  :D

As opposed to the other bruises and rashes you're likely to get from a close encounter of the road kind.

OC'd in Midlothian at the River City Diner for lunch and then next door at Great Clips for a haircut.  Then on to Petsmart on Midlothian turnpike and then to Sam's warehouse.  No problems anywhere, no one seemed to notice or care.
