I open carry occasionally at the "old" Food Lion in Powhatan on Rt 60 and the bookstore across from Chesterfield Mall as well. When I spoke to the seargent the night of my encounter with the Henrico officer, I told him I was from Powhatan and he said "so am I. And I've never heard of anyone open carrying there". Sounds like there are at least two of us (my parents live out there, so I end up there at some point every other weekend or so).
I just open carried at the Wal-Mart in Short Pump, the Ukrops at Short Pump and the Shell Station near the water tower in Short Pump - all places I've open carried many times before without a peep or problem...

A sad comment on that...
As HLH knows, my Junior Eddie Eagle had a little car-sickness problem on the way to the eat-n-greet, necessatating a quick trip into Short Pump Town(e) Center to procure a new outfit for the toddler. I was about to run in with my wife, when I remembered how the management there prohibits just about anything fun. Having already been kicked out of there once (for photography, no less) I opted to drop the wife at the curb and wait outside. Of course, the thought of her running through the mall alone at 0-dark-thirty didn't exactly make me pleased.
What really torques me though, in retrospect, is how much I felt like a criminal during those 5 minutes. I opted to undress the boy while mommy was in the mall, but I couldn't even do that in the well lit vestibule. I ended up pulling off to one of the loading dock areas, and using the door to shield my holster from public view while I disrobed the kid. Even so I felt like the first time I CC'd, like everyone's eyes were trained directly on me.
Kinda sad that the management company would enact policies that make me feel that way. Needless to say I don't choose to go there if there is any other alternative.

Finally got my Ruger P345 yesterday (my first handgun, yay!). Pretty nice. 45 ACP, has a picatinny rail and it's the decocker version. Kicks like a pissed off ostrich too, I can't believe I've heard people say that it's a "women's gun". I've OC'd with my mossberg maverick security 12 gauge before (not in a store or anything, just around the block), almost always ending badly, but I OC'd with the 345 at the willow lawn target on broad, and the taco bell a block down, and no real problems to report. I got a bunch of looks, probably because I have somewhat long hair, I'm young, and my attire is generally "college student casual". Appearance plays a large role on how people think of you.
Although I know that open carry is completely legal in VA (except for the no-brainer places), I still get kind of put off. Last year I almost got arrested for OC'ing with my 12 gauge in the fan (came back from the range; nowhere to park, so I had to park a few blocks down, and carry it to the apartment. Richmond city police officer happened to be walking by me and raised hell when he saw it), and I've been somewhat hesitant about it, even though I proudly OC'd the second I got the 345 .
What do you think would be the worst case scenario for someone calling the police on me? Would they be able to search my car, make me show them my ID, or take the gun from me? I'm pretty sure thats illegal search and seizure, right? (The police officer who saw me walking with the shotgun pretty much grabbed it out of my hands; wouldn't that be illegal seizure as well?)

OC'd at the wal-mart at Short Pump. At night, there is usually a Henrico LEO parked outside, or hanging around the entrance, and when I walked in, there were two of them. I nodded to them, they nodded back, and didn't say a word about the gun. When I was checking out, one of them came behind me to get in line and purchase something, and still didn't say anything. I'm guessing that Henrico has become savvy on OC.

OC'd at the Target and Kroger at short pump. No problems at Target. At Kroger, I went through self-checkout, and the monitoring attendant made a phone call to someone in the store after she saw the weapon. The only audible thing I could hear was "gun", so I presume she was talking about me. She then preceded to walk to the service desk, and I walked out after my transaction was completed. Nobody stopped me or anything and questioned me, so I didn't bother asking her if there was a problem. I don't think that a criminal would buy microwave dinners, then rob the place. Unless it was a hungry criminal...hahaha. People really need to relax. You try to do something for your safety and the safety of others, and they think that you're going to hold the place up.

Keep it up folks - just going about your business peacefully and matter of factly is educating the world about open carry legality, and, teaching them that guns are tools that normal people do carry everyday and don't abuse.

I'd bet the lady at Kroger's asked what to do about someone with a gun and was told by some savvy manager type that OC was legal and nothing need be done.

You guys want to know something funny? a little off topic though, well the store i work at sells long guns... no handguns... and if you bring in your gun for having a scope mounted on it or other work, it has to be in a locked case or a have a manager carry it back to be worked on.... well i have not seen any problems with handguns... a lot of on and off duty cops go there and i know they have theres concealed. but have never had a problem with OC becasue i have never seen anyone do it. I my self am not allowed to have a weapon on the company property... i do anyways... thats why i will not say where i work. even offduty i cannot carry my handgun open or concealed jsut because i work there. that is the biggest load of crap i have heard in my life...needless to say they are not allowed to search my car or me for my concealed handgun. just thought you guys should know some of the weird crap thats around.....a place that sells guns will not let you carry one.....thanks for letting me vent

I agree with you and feel your pain. I am not supposed to carry at work either, but unless I have to go to Ft Lee, I always do. I am not alone either due to the bad neighborhood I work in.

I don't think they can regulate your activity while you are not on the clock. I don't know very much about the laws in this area, but I really don't think they have a foot to stand on while you are not working.
If anyone else knows more about the laws in this area, could you please chime in?

I was wondering the same thing, kind of smacks of the same BS going on with the Soldiers stationed in Alaska.

Well I had an interesting experience at the best buy at short pump last night. I was browsing around for about 20 minutes, and picked up about 100-150 dollars in merchandise. Before I was going to check out, I stopped by one of those video game displays to check out a game. A few minutes later, the store manager poked me on the shoulder to get my attention, then he said "I know that you're not breaking the law or being hostile, but your gun is scaring off customers so I'm going to have to ask you to purchase your items and leave." I then told him that I would gladly leave, and that I would take my business to circuit city. I then went to circuit city, picked up the same items, and there were absolutely no problems. I think I saved a few dollars too...
I just think that Short Pump is unfriendly to OC'ers in general.
