mercutio545 wrote: Well I had an interesting experience at the best buy at short pump last night. I was browsing around for about 20 minutes, and picked up about 100-150 dollars in merchandise. Before I was going to check out, I stopped by one of those video game displays to check out a game. A few minutes later, the store manager poked me on the shoulder to get my attention, then he said "I know that you're not breaking the law or being hostile, but your gun is scaring off customers so I'm going to have to ask you to purchase your items and leave." I then told him that I would gladly leave, and that I would take my business to circuit city. I then went to circuit city, picked up the same items, and there were absolutely no problems. I think I saved a few dollars too...

I just think that Short Pump is unfriendly to OC'ers in general.

I wonder what is the Best Buy official policy?  I also wonder if there really were customers "running for the door"?

I've had other problems at Best Buy.  I have not had problem OC'ing, but have had a few while CC'ing.

Those were related to them wanting to search my bag with while my gun was in my bag.  I also always refuse to show ID when using my VISA or MasterCard.

Know what scares me the most most about this story.............that mercutio545 was open carrying and that the store manager had to poke  him on the shoulder to get his attention.  So the story has two two lessons in it.....don't shop at Best Buy in Short Pump.....and don't forget your responsibility for situational awareness when open carrying.

I've OCed before in Best Buy near the Springfield Mall - no problems.

Also, I eventually convinced them to stop the ID checks against signed credit cards - it took a while, but I finally threw enought protests at the management that they cracked down on the rogue teenage wonnabee ID police.

What is the store number to the Best Buy in question in Short Pump?  I am going to make a call.

I've open carried at this Best Buy 5 or 6 times without a problem, all within the last 6 months.

Mike, the number/information for the Best Buy I was asked to leave is:

W Broad VA (Store 423)

11200 W BROAD ST
Glen Allen, VA 23060
Phone: 804-364-5900

I didn't get the managers name, but he was a heavyset caucasian with a mustache in his late 40's.

Oh, and "bayboy42", the manager poked me without verbally getting my attention first. I'm not some super spy. He came up from behind me (last time I checked, the average human can only see 180 degrees or so, even with peripheral vision) and poked me. You should mind your own business and not try to make examples of people.

Also, the retention on my holster is so high that if I felt someone going for my gun, they would get an elbow to the face before they could get a good grip on it to pull it out.

Took the wife shopping on Friday.  OC'ed at Dicks Sporting Goods across from VA Center Commons, Michaels and Shoe Carnival (same shopping center), and Dicks and Yankee Candle Factory at Stony Point Mall.  Also OC'ed at Burlington Coat Factory on West Broad and Comcast's office on Staples Mill Rd.  Got the usual "where do you work?" from the guy at the Stony Point Dicks, otherwise all uneventful.

I just called - man said he was the main manager and indicated he had no gun ban in place and would look into it.

Well I'd be glad to OC there again, and if I get asked to leave, before I go I'll be sure to get the persons name for reference purposes. Should have gotten his name in the first place...

Just wondering, how long do you have to wait to go back into a place so it's not "tresspassing" anymore? I know that if an employee verbally asks you to leave, you have to leave, but when can you go back while OC'ing?

Oh, and there aren't any posted signs either.

Yes, when OC'ing, appearance matters.  Shoud it?  No.  But it does.  When OC'ing I shave and dress neatly and never have any problems.  If I don't care to shave or be neat, I CC.

The biggest problems I have had is when I am "dressed up".  The biggest problem I have ever had I was in a 3 piece suit.  I wear what I want.  My defense of myself is based on personal protection, not how I dress.

Seriously, I don't know why I have the most run-ins with people on here. It has to be because I look so young. I'm getting my hair cut tomorrow anyways (probably a high and tight or something like that) so I wonder if that will make a difference.

Anways, I OC'd at the toys r us off of parham rd to get some toys and games for the cousins, and after about 10 minutes of browsing, the manager asked me to leave. He said "I'm aware that it is legal to carry a sidearm in Virginia, but this is a toy store and you might scare away the kids here". Note that it was around 8:50 at night and I didn't see any kids in the store. He also said that he was an ex-police officer, like he was "siding with me" but for the "kids sake" I had to leave. I said I would gladly leave and take my business elsewhere. Before I left, I requested his business card and he gave it to me (it's in my car somewhere and I can't find it at the moment, but when I do I'll post it on here), then suddenly asked if there was anything in particular I was looking for, like he changed his mind or something. I told him that it was appreciated and I would go elsewhere, and I left.

Every kid who's seen my sidearm has either asked me if I was a police officer, or stared in awe. I don't think that guns scar kids. The crap they show on TV and in movies is a bigger threat to kids than seeing guns. They use them in video games and play cops and robbers every day don't they? Might as well teach them the laws of the land while they're young. Heck, I remember shooting assault rifles with my dad and his special forces group when I was a kid. I wasn't scared. At the time, I thought it was the most amazing thing I've ever done. I think he was just trying to be a cop again and exercise some of the authority that he once had.
