South Bound I-5 from the King / Pierce County Line to the exit at 54th Ave in Fife.
Date, time & place to meet:
Date: 10AM
Time: Early November 2008
Place: Large Parking lot just north of the US Bank (northeast corner of 54th & Pacific Hwy) & the Casino parking garages.
-- The limit is 15 people and 3 vehicles onsite at the highway--
I have room for 7-8 in my rig.
I will have all the forms that are required by the state. Both forms are avail online:
Participant Registration Form (.pdf 38kb) - For each person involved in litter pickup

Equipment Supplied:
hard hats - not a requirement but suggested to wear in case of flying road debris.
reflective vests - if you have a reflective jacket or a vest of your own you can use it.

trash bags

gloves
pick up sticks / reach extenders (harbor freight tools has them)

I am the current coordinator for Adopt a Highway in Pierce and Thurston Counties. I have some sections available at this time on I-5. A couple around the Fife area. MP 137-139 and 137.5-139-5 either NB or SB. While driving home tonight I scoped out the area. This area is the "Fife Curve." A highly visible stretch of I-5. 5 days a week rush hour traffic is usually crawling through the area. Heading South - Mile post 139.5 (the King/Pierce line) to just north of the 54th Ave bridge in Fife mile post 137.5. The sign for our group would look similar the one below. MP 137 to 137.5 encompasses the 54th ave on/off ramps.
If you want areas in King County, you would need to contact Pat Eakman for areas around Kent (eakmanp@wsdot.wa.gov) for areas near Seattle Jim Christo (christoj@wsdot.wa.gov) or Everett areas Ken Higdon (higdonk@wsdot.wa.gov). So, what would be entailed in doing this? Monetary donations? Time in cleaning up?... and how much of the above?

Participating groups agree to clean up an "adopted" section of highway two to six times a year (depending on the highway and volume of anticipated litter) for at least two years. WSDOT will supply litter bags and safety materials. Typically, the assigned sections include two to four miles of roadside and may be of the participant's choosing or one suggested by the coordinator. Safety of the participants is the primary concern in determining where sections are assigned. Sections are assigned on a first come, first serve basis and waiting lists are maintained for the more popular areas or sections.
After pick up, volunteers send in an activity report describing the hours worked- this secures medical insurance for the volunteers and alerts WSDOT crews that litter bags are ready for collection and disposal. One person is designated as the “crew leader” to contact if the local coordinator has questions. A highway sign recognizing volunteer groups is installed along the adopted section of highway within six to eight weeks after the final agreement is signed.

A couple of us here in Utah tried to contact the Adopt-a-Highway person here to get this going. After several weeks and lots of messages without hearing from her, we gave up. I wish there were an office we could go into or something...

I was hoping to get 10 folks involved before I submitted the paperwork. After driving back and forth from Kirkland this week I thought I would put in for the South bound section. It has a wide grassy area vs the north bound which is a open ditch and marsh. Currently 8 members have agreed if I can get 2 more. I'll send in the paperwork.

At this time I have 8 folks interested. I'd like to get 10 folks signed up before taking this on. I'll go ahead and fill out the necessary forms to request the Fife location and get the ball rolling.

if you put in the dots on this site it adds the http://, so I used commas instead. just think of them as big dots for now....
We have till July 1st to come up with signage info. I sent in the papers today.

I haven't gotten an answer on all my questions, but I did receive info that No Web Addresses or phone numbers are allowed on the signs. So I will need different wording.

| How about NorthWest Citizens Defense League? I would really prefer a Open Carry reference. It seems like VCDL is almost synonymous with OCDO at least in the OC community. I don't know that there would be a connection there outside of that.

PM sent. So what is the name of the adopting organization for the Registration form? I like the NW Citizen Defense League, or some variation thereof. Cascade/Washington/something with fewer characters.
Perhaps 'NW Defense Volunteers'.
