I moved to West Virginia about a year ago and took notice of the large amount of outdoor activities available in this State. Right now, I'm interested in hiking. Being very conscentious about being able to defend myself in any situation, I did a little bit of research on open carrying in State and National Forests located within West Virginia.
Based on a literal reading of WV Code §20-2-5. Unlawful methods of hunting and fishing and other unlawful acts, unless I am lawfully hunting an animal in season during specific time periods, I am *legally* prevented from open carry of any firearm in a State or National Forest.
I know you can carry concealed if you have a CCW permit in these areas. But I could use some clarification on open carry because that is my preferred method while hiking. Taking all 29 paragraphs of §20-2-5 in context seems to apply for hunting purposes, but I want to be absolutely sure.
Can anyone help me out?
Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, I agree with you. This is a recurring area of questionning I receive.
2009 HB 3333 (which has been carried over to 2010) would clarify the legality of carrying handguns, either openly or concealed, as it relates to hunting regulations, and exempt individuals licensed to carry concealed handguns from certain regulations on the manner in which rifles and shotguns must be transported in vehicles or the woods. See the attached PDF file for more information on HB 3333.

Jim,
Would this also apply to Wildlife Management Areas?

The town itself is fine. However, the park in Harper's Ferry is the Harper's Ferry National Historical Park. HFNHP is a national park and thus you will have to wait until 2010 to carry there.
