Another great idea!  Organize and do it - get it in the news and petition for the sign to me erected - that costs $ though.

Great idea  - have a littel cleanup while OCing, get in the local papers, and figure out how to get the road sign erected later designating the group as highway cleanuppers!

We have our Adopt-A-Highway permit for open carry litter pickup group.

How about a poll with a couple of different days as the choices for the 1st day ?

Saturday May 16th at 10am  or

Sunday May 17th at 2pm ?

If the cookout happens the following weekend, Memorial Day, we'd have 2 solid open carry events for the media to cover back to back.  It seems like it would be positive if the open carry litter day came before the cookout so the media reports on community volunteering first.

We'll need to pick up 2 "working ahead" signs, bags, and fashionable orange vests from the Transportation SE Region Office on Barstow St.   Could someone in Waukesha County volunteer to do this one day in advance to our first open litter pickup day ?  (I'm in Janesville)

The segment we were assigned is Hwy 16 from CTH "C" to STH 83.   I have not been told when the "OPENCARRY.ORG   WISC   CHAPTER " sponsor sign will go up along the highway.

Dang!  you guys are fast.  Let me know if you need help stirring up press coverage, though you might want to meet up just as a group once or twice first just to get to know each other first.

I would be able to do this. Is there anyone specific that I would have to talk to about acquiring these items when the time comes?

Not to ask a stupid question here, but has anybody confirmed the absence of school zones in this area?

There are private schools at either end of the route.  Country Christian Grade School is on the west end (Hwy C), south of 16 and Wisconsin Lutheran High School is on the east end (Hwy 83), north of 16.  I don't think there is any way to carry on the south west side of 16 near Country Christian as their land abuts 16.  Wisconsin Lutheran is farther away from 16, but I don't know if it is 1000' feet from the Hwy.  I will try to determine it as I drive that route every day and maybe I can shoot the distance with my laser rangefinder.

Could it be that we were allowed that stretch with the DOT knowing about the schools?

If need be, I can go without a sidearm near any schools and cover that area.

Yeah, you guys have to really do your homework on the school zone thing - and don't count on any government agency to help you as it is not your job - you could always just do the part near the schools first wearing empty holsters and then holster up once out of the zone as you finish up?

In Either day.... keep us posted

( someone really needs to measure 1050 feet to the schools and mark it with a t-post or something if we are going to do this.)

Measuring on google earth, those schools carve out healthy chunks of clean up area.  I would estimate probably about 1/2 mile of the 2 mile route.  Worst of all, they're on each end of the stretch.

Of course we could ask permission of those schools.  Why would they object to litter cleanup on weekends?  Being private schools, maybe they're more open to the idea....

That is correct.  Need to contact the schools and get permission for multiple people OCing to pick up trash in the school zones.  This must be in writing and carried by multiple people during the trash pickup.

By popular demand, the first open carry litter pickup date will be:
Saturday May 16th at 10am

We have a volunteer to pick up DOT materials for us ahead of time.

We still need:
- A location to meet, there may be a parking lot right on this stretch ?
- An open carry expert to give a quick refresher on how to respond to any law enforcement activity.
- A videographer
- A media contact, in the event media arrives

How's the school proximity looking ?

Any other issues ?

What do you think about meeting at 9:30.

I was looking at the area given to you, and I see a real problem, or 3... Schools are lining your stretch of highway.

University Lake School is about half way in the middle, and it is about 550 or so feet from the highway. So you have them at both ends and in the middle.  I don't suppose that you could ask for a new stretch?  94 might work out better.

Well carry or not, you got a good thing started.

What information do we have about this 3rd school that was found in the middle of the 2mi length?

I went to University Lake School.  Their property runs all the way up to Vettleson, which means it's within about 150-200 feet of Hwy 16.

Having been on the grounds a few months ago, I can confirm (although it's fairly obvious from the satellite pics) that is also a school on the southwest corner of Nagawicka and Vettleson also within about 200-300 feet - so that's actually 2 schools right in the middle that are well inside 1000' of 16.

Lake Country School is just west of University Lake School.  It will be difficult to carry at all on this stretch of 16.  One school on each end and two in the middle.
