Great board!
Quick question: Every once in awhile I come accross a gas station that will offer USPS. Are these gas stations considered "federal"? Often times there is not a "seperate section" of the gas station for the postal service, but rather may be done at a regular cash register or from behind a simple counter that may be for postal sercice only. I am just curious what the law would be in these gas stations for open carry.
Thanks for the replies.

| Are you sure they aren't offering UPS shipping?

As I understand it, they have to be a "Post Office" with a post master to be under the federal jurisdiction. Read Title 18, Part 1, Chapter 44, Section 930 - see subsections (a) & (d)3.
If the property is leased, I have been told that only behind the counter is 'federal'. Don't have any documentation one way or the other as yet.

18 USC 930 that you reference above has no applicability to the post office.
What you want is 39 CFR 232.1. The prohibition is section (l):
(l) Weapons and explosives . Notwithstanding the provisions of any other law, rule or regulation, no person while on postal property may carry firearms, other dangerous or deadly weapons, or explosives, either openly or concealed, or store the same on postal property, except for official purposes.
It applies to postal property as defined in section (a):
(a) Applicability. This section applies to all real property under the charge and control of the Postal Service, to all tenant agencies, and to all persons entering in or on such property. This section shall be posted and kept posted at a conspicuous place on all such property.
The portion of a store in front of the post office counter is NOT under the charge and control of the Postal Service. Neither is the parking area of a store that has a postal outlet in it. Therefore, weapons may be carried in the parking lot and in the store and even while conducting business at the postal counter. Only the portion behind the counter is under the control and charge of the Postal Service.
Now real post office buildings - both the parkling lot and the building are off limits. So, to even take your gun off and put it in your car while you go into the building - if your car is in the post office parking lot - is against the regulation.
