I was getting ready to leave and was strapping a holster on. She looked down her nose at me with a foul look on her face and said "don't put that stupid thing on, you ain't a cop". I said you are right, but I can't strap a cop to my belt then proceeded to explain the average response times of the police. She still thought it was silly to be carrying.

Next time, try this.
"Mom, I love you so much that I want to make sure I have as many tools available to me to make sure you stay safe and alive for a very long time."
Make sure you get a little teary eyed and then give her a big hug.

Wow! My mom's pretty anti as well. Maybe we should get them all together so they can have a little support group of their own.
My mom knows I carry, but but makes it clear she doesn't approve (the "disappointed mom" look). My dad has a .22 and a .410, but she makes him keep them "DC style" disassembled with the parts scattered around the house. If the flag ever went up, it'd take him a half hour to get a gun.

Whoa, my Mom is not that bad. She is all for people being armed and the 2nd ammendment, she just thought it was silly that I was strapping on a holster for the purpose of carrying. I guess she thought I just leave my gun in the truck, you know, because people only get attacked in the their vehicle.

I guess she kind of has an excuse. Her twin brother was killed 20 years ago or so, been very anti ever since.
Of course he was in bed with the dude's wife at the time.
You know what they say: guns don't kill people, husbands who come home early do.

Shooter wasn't the then-mayor of Saraland, was he?
Naww, I think that was over twenty years ago. Mayor came home, wife not in house, mayor goes out back and finds wife and lover. Mayor returns to house, retrieves weapon, and, with one shot, dispatches both wife and lover!!
God, I love my home state some times!!

It certainly has character. There was a fistfight in the state legislature a few years ago.

When i told my father (a Kalifornian who's borderline socialist) that i was going to get my permit to carry, he just passed it off as something that wasn't really going to happen and didn't really comment on the idea.
He came out for a week to visit and the first morning he was here we all decided to go out to eat. He came to see if i was ready and i was just putting on my shirt when he noticed my firearm on my hip. He then asked me "what are you doing with a gun and why are you wearing it, were going to eat you don't need that". I turned to him and told him that i had a permit to carry it and i intend to not be a victim, to which he looked at me like i had gone off my rocker. To say the least he was nervous at first about being out in public with someone carrying a firearm.
Later after we got back i sat down with him and talked to him about it. I asked him why he seemed so opposed to it. His response was as expected; your not a cop. It was then i explained to him all the normal arguments for having it and that crime happens anywhere, even gave him all the cop one liners "I cant fit a cop in my pocket, when seconds count the cops are only minutes away" which he found amusing.
I then asked him why he went to Vietnam? his short answer was to liberate and give freedom. It was after my comment that he finally understood and is now in favor of carrying a firearm. I said to him "why would you go fight for someone els's freedom and liberty when you wont fight for mine"

I like your quote- bolded for emphasis...
You could also argue that the supreme court has ruled that police have no duty to protect individuals from harm (Warren v D.C. (1981)- after a 911 call produced an inadequate response from police and resulted in a 14 hour ordeal where three women were robbed, raped and beaten repeatedly by two men who broke into the home.)
If police are not made responsible for your safety, then who will do it for you?

This is per my younger brother... He and the rents were on their way back from OK and staying the night in IL and of course in IL he had his gun locked up in the trunk. When they reached the hotel fro the night MOM says have you put your pistol on it? It does no good in that box!... This is from a MOM who less than a year ago didn't want us carrying in her house! Now she is talking about getting her own pistol and CPL!!

| I put my firearm on just about every single day, my dad says to me when we go out, oh here comes Mr. 1880's with a gun strapped to his hip. My mom thinks it's stupid to carry a gun, but she's coming around. My dad doesn't really care that I carry, except for when I OC, then he starts in with all kinds of rude and immature comments about OC'ing. Whatever, I don't care, I have easier access to my firearm on my hip in plain view, verses concealed in a vest, pants pocket, under a coat or under a shirt. Plus, I like to carry a large frame pistol, it's very uncomfortable to carry a large framed pistol tucked in a concealed holster between your waist and the pants your wearing. And, I know they make very powerful small firearms now, like my my ruger lcp, but I like my primary weapon, to be more accurate, and practical, I live by the motto of always being prepared and preparing for the unexpected.
