Shooting of Officers Ignites Debate Over Open Carry

Gun advocates responded Thursday to Mayor Tom Barrett's emotional plea for tougher gun laws.
Mayor Tom Barrett didn't pull any punches at a news conference at district two. He came down hard on the issue of getting guns off the streets.
"If history is any indicator its going to be a gun that someone thought was great idea to give to an 18-year old and now those two officers are laying in Froedtert," stated Barrett during a press conference Wednesday.
Mayor Barrett was emotional as he talked about the two Milwaukee police officers gunned down this week.
"I don't care what special interests groups say. I want them to see what happens in the hospital room when you have police officers laying there because someone said it was okay to carry a gun in the middle of the city."
This is at odds with the state's open carry law. Recently state Attorney General JB Van Hollen stated that it's not against the law to wear a gun on your hip.
"He thinks attacking gun ownership is the way to deal with it and it's not."
Gun advocate and former cop Jim Fendry disagrees with Mayor Barrett.
"Day after day, there is a news story that a licensed gun owner was able to stop a crime or assist a police officer because he was armed."
Either way- Barrett worries more officers will be shot if guns aren't taken off the streets.
"It has to change and it has to change now."
Fendry believes there's a bigger issue here. He wants more cops on the streets as well.
The Mayor wants the Governor to call a special session of the legislature to toughen the state's gun laws.

I would like to hear him publicly apologize to all the open carry citizens in this state. His generalized comments are ridiculous and shows how little he cares what the law is. He has his own agenda and if it weren't for the state laws he would carry out his socialistic views with impunity.
Once they find out where the gun came from (I believe they will find out it was stolen) and wasn't "given" to him Barrett should be on tv apologizing to the entire city.

The Mayor wants the Governor to call a special session of the legislature to toughen the state's gun laws.

He must be afraid of Open Carry's growing political clout - over 1100 rabid members (many in Milwaukee) and growing. An opponent against him in the next election will be able make use of this.

I have already written my state reps and senators and informed them that I will not support and candidate or incumbent that does not support my 2nd Amendment rights without prejudice.

now don't get me wrong.....i feel for the two officers wounded ..........but it wasn't my fault or anybody elses reading this....................and then comes the old addage...............more tougher gun laws , GOOD GOD....HOW ABOUT LESS CRIMINALS ON THE STREET.AND BE TOUGHER ON THEM

You guys just don't get it, any more so than Barrett.
Anyone advocating the exercise of a right is, in today's Amerika, a "special interest group."
Since most Amerikans don't give two hoots in hell about concepts such as freedom or liberty, we (myself included) ARE a special interest group. Wear that label proudly.

What a simple jake-leg that Barrett is. He owes the people of his city, in fact all the decent gun owners in WI a major apology. His type of thinking lumps the dangerous criminal minority in with the large, law-abiding majority of gun owners, and his implication is that any type of "gun on the street" will increase crime. Doesn't this guy read? We've had MILLIONS more "guns on the streets" all over the US since CC was democratized in FL in 1987. Where have the problems been? Oh, that's right, we don't want this phenomenon of freedom to come to WI. "Let's nip that in the bud" sayeth he.
You folks have an opportunity to teach a lot of your fellow citizens about gun rights now that he has put you in the spotlight. Let's hope come election time Barrett is given a message about the consequences of demonizing the good people.

Did this guy just say his police officers lives are more important then the citizen's..??
I feel for the officers that were wounded, I hope they recover soon.
But how does this mayor think taking a weapon away from law abiding citizens is going to stop the crime.
Instead of having to go to the hospital to visit his officers... he should try going to the morgue and visit the law abiding citizens who have died because neither he or any of his police officers were able to protect them.
Does he honestly think putting more police officers on the street is going to stop the crime.... you could put 5,000 more officer on his streets and it won't stop it and who's going to foot the bill for 5k more.
He's not thinking logically.... nor is his Police Chief.

That investigation led to federal charges against the man who allegedly bought the gun Burton used. According to a federal complaint, Jacob D. Collins "knowingly made a false and fictitious statement" when he purchased a Taurus pistol at Badger Guns in West Milwaukee. He admitted to investigators that he bought the gun with the intention of selling it to Julius Burton, but filled out a form indicating that he was not "acquiring the firearm on behalf of another person."

He could have said "I had no plans to sell it, but after a friend of mine and I had a conversation about the new gun I bought, he made me an offer I couldn't turn down."
I'm not suggesting people tell this lie, just that he would likely be free if he had exercised his right to remain silent. There would be no proof that it was a straw purchase...
In this circumstance, I'm partly glad he blabbed. But it serves a a lesson nonetheless. Don't talk to the cops. Anything you say CAN and WILL be used AGAINST you. Not a single word you ever speak can possibly help you when dealing with someone who's job it is to lock up anyone he can find an excuse to.

And here's the other problem. Why did he make that confession? I'll give you two possible reasons.
1. He's an idiot.
2. They offered him a deal
I bet it's number 2! And number 2 is the reason for a lot of this trouble in the first place. They'll probably let him off easy with some sort of deal and he'll be out in a couple of years just like all of the other fricken criminals. Keep them in jail and we wouldn't have this problem.
If it's number 1, then well, he probably would get in trouble anyway, so all the more reason to confess for a shorter prison term. They could have checked his record or gave him a piss test to find THC in his system. Then he lied on a federal form and would go to the big house anyway.
