Those of you who live there--could you tell me how gun friendly Alaska is--and help me to understand how things work in your state?

Alaska is one of the gun friendliest states in the union.

What is it exactly you want to know how it works?

Lets see here...

No waiting periods for firearm purchases
No one gun per month
No permit required to carry concealed (you must be 21 though) or open carry

You can own anything from a .22LR to .50 BMG and Alaskans love their guns.

We are known as "The Last Frontier."

I can take a 5min drive, put cash on the counter at a big retail store and 15min later walk out with a .50 bmg.

Read the posts from this Alaska page and read up on the laws and commentary that has been posted. It is a "Gold Star" open carry state and there is no license required to carry concealed or openly. We are class III friendly, firearms are prevalent throughout as we have one of the very highest rate of per-capita gun ownership in the nation. We also have a serious hunting heritage which is an additional tac-on..

We don't have a bunch of fear mongering anti-gun nuts around here from what I have ever seen. The sweet ambiance of freedom permeates throughout our state.

So, you're saying it's too cold for those sissy-britches antis? :D

I mean, after all, if you can throw a pan of boiling water and have it freeze before it hits the ground, imagine what it would do to their pants everytime they wet themselves at the thought of an inanimate object!

We can all hope, every time I hear a greenie liberal bitch talking about moving up here, All I can come up with are horror stories of people with guns and out of control animals. And all the times I almost got eaten and see how long it takes them to run away crying.

We do get left-leaners out here, but most of them tend to be tourists, seasonals, or located in the more urban parts of the state (happily, there aren't that many of them).

No slam on those living in Anchorage or Fairbanks intended, but it is unfortunately a fact--libs like their cities (check out the demographics of the last election--your more urban counties across the nation are blue, not red).  The more comfortable urban life insulates them from a fair amount of reality, and affords them the luxury of dreaming up vain fantasies about how the world should be ordered.

I've not ran into any problems yet.. My buddy and I were pulled over tonight by a State Trooper on our way to Anchorage from Portage, We were running a bit fast apparently so he stopped us. He asked for the usual stuff and I told him I was carrying. He just asked to see it, wanted to hold it while he checked our info. When he came back he just issued us a warning and handed my weapon back. We talked longer about motorcycles then he spent on other stuff. He was very professional and great to talk to..

Hope they're all like him

Alaska is a great gun friendly state but it does need some work.  It does not recognize all states CCW when it should even though you don't need one.

As for Anchorage itself.  The new mayor needs to make a few changes.  Like take down some of  no gun signs at some of the municipal buildings.  For every other Alaskan please write our Mayor Dan Sullivan and let him no that they are illegal signs and need to be taken down.

I know I don't need to say it to some of you but for the rest make it a respectful letter he is a good guy, so far.

Dan Sullivan Anchorage Mayor

If you dont need a permit to carry concealed, what does it matter if Alaska doesnt recognize CCWS from other states?

I mean that there are no relevant state statutes that further restrict NFA weapons or accessories, to my knowledge. However, meeting the federal guidelines for the ownership and possession of National Firearms Act items are required.

It's the principal of it.  Even though you don't need to have a permit why wouldn't Alaska recognize all the states as a sign to let everyone know that as long as you are a law abiding citizen we want you to carry in Alaska.

I am not understanding what your beef is...

With all due respect, the fact that Alaska threw out the permit process except for the purposes of reciprocity with other states, and recognizes that American citizens have an individual right to bear arms without a tax or permission slip from government no matter what state they are from is a GOOD thing.

We do regognize every states permit. It's called the 2nd amendment. If you are legally allowed to possess and carry firearms, you can do so here with or without a permit. What does it matter that they specifically "recognize" your states permit when it is not necessary?

Again, I completely do not understand why this is a problem.

Now on the another subject I wish I could get through to Mayor Sullivan on the radio and ask him about taking down the signs at the library.  Does

I get what your saying, and your right, but all the websites official and non-official websites that state what State recognizes which permit they all state only certain states that Alaska recognizes.  I wish they would just put no permit necessary.  For some that are new to carrying in other states this can confuse some.

Now another suject of Alaska being gun friendly, I wish I could get ahold of Mayor Sullivan on while he is on the radio and confront him about taking down the signs at the library.  Does anybody know where there are more illegal signs like that posted?  And has anyone been able to talk to the Mayor about them?

I don't agree with that either. But 18 year olds may open carry...
