| Hello all, this is my first time to ever post on here, so here it goes. I currently live in Texas and have a valid CHL permit and I might be moving to South Dakota in the very near future. I would like to know about the laws in South Dakota, where can and can't you carry, are there any special signs that have to be posted befor you can not carry, and is open carry legal. If anyone can help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

SD is very gun friendly...let's see...shall issue state...head down to whatever county you might relocate to and find their sheriff's office...fill out the application, they'll do a quick check and give you a temp permit on the spot (assuming nothing goofy comes back on the check)..a few weeks later your permanent permit will arrive in the mail...cost is $10.00 good for 4 years...SD has pre-emption so city/towns/municpalities can not pass any laws more restrictive to what the state allows. Usual can't carry places (schools/courthouses/places that get more than 50% of their $$$ from alcohol)
Open carry is allowed without a permit...
No signs anywhere that I've been except for the casinos in Deadwood.

I am curious as to why people would choose to pay 10$ to get a concealed permit rather than just carry openly? to carry open do i just put the weapon where i want and thats it or do i have to fill out some papers or something?

Everyone in this South Dakota family 18 and over has a CC permit from South Dakota. With a CC permit you can purchase a new gun and take it with you immediately without going thru a waiting period.
In addition, there are lots of times that CC is preferred over open carry. Such as to weddings, dances, funerals, schools, airports, etc...
In addition, we like the idea of getting a permit to send a message to our state officials that we would not favor gun control. The more permits on file the better. They stand like votes as a reminder to elected officials that many in our state are very pro gun.
In addition to that, I can use my permit to carry in other states as well. States that may not allow open carry but honor my CC permit.
