VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

To date members have worked independently as a grass roots operation with a small core group of people assisting where they can, and that has worked out well.  There is no board of directors, no official officers, just volunteers doing what they can.  But the Michigan Open Carry (MOC) movement is growing and with growth comes increasing responsibility as our actions could affect millions of Michigan gun owners.

It’s evident that open carry is growing in Michigan.  With the recent arrest and dismissal for open carry in Grand Haven and the possible civil litigation to follow it’s prudent to consider the possibility that as word gets out those opposed to OC will start enacting ways to restrict or ban our OC right.

So, with the assistance of Gun Owners of America’s (GOA) Michigan Representative I’m asking for volunteers to be “MOC Regional Team Members” (MOC-RTM) with a goal of five for each region, that’s just 25 people total, and more is always welcome.  These Team members would be the “go to person” in managing OC activities in their regions.  Ideally I would like to see one contact person for each county, but for now 5 people per region would be very helpful.  Duties for the contact person could include but not limited to any of the following.

1)      Organize OC get-togethers, present talks on OC to local sportsman groups, gun clubs, Police agencies, etc.  Develop other members to be county contact persons within their regions.

2)      Contact and be interviewed by the media.

3)      Keep abreast and post any current pro and anti-gun legislation in their regions.

4)      Work to develop good relationships with Sheriffs, Local PDs, and Legislators in their regions.  Also help with any clerical need e.g. mailings, fund-raising, etc.

Everyone has talents that they can use to promote the OC cause.  The MOC-RTM would develop a network of talented volunteers within their region to assist them in promoting OC.

As a start I have divided the state into regions that takes into account Counties and to some extent senate political boundaries.  There is some overlap between districts but at this time we will have to deal with this until we get more volunteers to work smaller areas within regions.

If you are interested in helping to represent and work in your area let me know either by posting here or by PMing me.  You will have the opportunity to shape the future of OC in Michigan and by working together we can help protect not just our firearm rights but all our rights as Americans.

THANK YOU ALL, Brian Jeffs

This is not a full time job, just help when you can, please reconsider and DO become a RTM for your region.  Just a few hours a week can help a lot.

Oh...I think you're a member all right.;)  I'll put you down as a member in the SE region, so you'll have lots of help.   We have 5 for that area, but none for the other regions.  I was hoping to get at least one from each area.

I don't like the disection of the Northern tip of the mitt.  Get rid of the VERTICAL N/W, N/E regions, and instead go from Benzie County to Alcona County, I would throw my hat in the ring for the Northern tip to  the Bridge.

The lines are a guide, if you want to help out in those counties please do.  A RTM doesn't have to stay just within his region.  I'm from TC and get up there often and can help out with any plans for that area.  So are you up for it?  Can I put you down as a RTM for whatever area you would like to cover?  I PMed you.

I'm on board for doing what I can, when I can.  SE region, Oakland County primarily but will travel if/when I can.

As some of you may know, I have had numerous contacts with Auburn Hills officials to review a particular hunting ban ordinance which infringes generally on open carry.  Currently it is with the city attorney who is reviewing to provide guidance to the police department on handling OC'ers.

Due to my research into Pontiac's ordinances, I've found direct infringements on OC.  I've made initial email contacts, with the standard attachments found here, to Pontiac PD and the Oakland County Prosecutor to discover their guidance to officers on enforceability of those.  Haven't heard anything back yet.

The SE is covered fairly well.  We have one RTM that will work in the Central North overlapping the NW and NE regions.  We have no one for the UP, and I can work in the SW region.  Please consider helping out whenever you can.  Thanks to those that have stepped forward.  Now get to work!

I'll help out in the UP, but if you get another I'd be asking you to split it in half, as I am way at the far northwestern tip.  Another leader in the Straights or other eastern area would be extremely helpful.  Even if it was the Mackinac area that could be split differiently.

I already attend city council meetings on behalf of the Housing Commission.  I know our local PD well (all one of them) and have casual conversations with the rest in the county area.

I am extremely active already in other volunteer community areas and stay pretty damned busy, but I will help where I can, and could use some help as well, but I'll give her my best if you want me :)

Well, I'm not sure about the talks and that, I'm not sure I'm prepared for that sort of thing as far as being up on specific laws and whatnot, but I'll do my best to help organize events and whatever else I can do.  I'm pretty busy with school, work, and everything else in the world that I have to do, but I'm sure I can help some.

I'm in Saginaw County, but I spend a lot of time in Midland, Bay, Tuscola, and Genesee counties as well, so put me down as between SE and NE if you want....

Hello to all MOC members!

Great start, lets see if we can fill all regions with team members as soon as possible.

There is a lot of work we have the opportunity to undertake and getting started as soon as possible, is to our advantage.  Thanks again for supporting the right!

Hi.

Is this formation of a MOC-RTM structure, in this forum and this thread, being publicized to GOA members as well, on their forums or email distribution lists?

I'm sure some GOA members would appreciate being alerted to the activity here, and I'm curious if that is happening.

I don't know if you even want me but...

I'm on EMU's forensics (competitive public speaking) team, and I'd be happy to do any writing/speaking that anyone wants done in the SE area. I don't really have time to do much organizing (school's starting next week), but I can whip up speeches/letters/etc. in my spare time, and my weekends are fairly free and flexible.

Hello Dan and Thank You,

Yes, we are trying our best to assist in getting more people oriented and organized in their states.  This site was originated by two GOA members.  We are currently making decisions as to which methods we will give priority to in alerting our members.

As you know sometimes it takes contacting some individuals many times to get the info out , with so many having busy schedules.

One of the best ways we can do this is word of mouth to your other gun friends, at gun clubs and ranges and of course posting on other gun frienfly sites.  Thanks for all your help

Nikon,

You are a fine example of what we are looking for.  It's exactly what we want, people who have one of any specific strengths they can lend here and there, to help further our right.

Even if you don't have a specialty there is so much a person can do to help that is not an inconvenience.  Counting envelops, calling or looking up information, it could be that simple.

The adage there id "strength in numbers" especially makes it's mark here with OC.  So in short, Nikon, it would be an honor to us all to utilize your talents in pushing the OC issue in the right direction.  Thanks, Paul.

Brian,

One suggested responsibility is to contact local law enforcement and encourage them to issue training advisories on open carry and preemption that must be read by street officers.  Similar to Washington State.

Brian, I'd volunteer, but I don't know what help I can be.  I and my wife are good with computers, web, HTML, php, etc. Word, Excel and the like are her forte.  Mine is sticking my neck out.. LOL  I am only a recent pistol owner here in Michigan.  I have been a Deputy in Nebraska for 8 years, but the laws here in Michigan are similar but in some cases different.  I agree that there needs to be uniformity among the counties, cities and villages.  One Michigan, united, and not with uncertainty from county to county, city to city.  Surely there is someone besides me here in this corner of the world??    How many on this forum are from SW Michigan?  How many from the Michigan Gun Owners forum site are here in this neck of the woods?

Brian, you can count me in if you want.  Visited with Skip and reading his books.  We all have a duty to our family and our fellow man to be the watchdogs of those that are not as inclined (sheep).  We all need to pull our part, if we believe in "Give me liberty or give me death", it clearly rings true that we ALL have a responsibility to God, to Family, and to our Country and our neighbors.   I wore a gun for 8 years as a Deputy in NE to "server and protect", and I'm still the same Vernon deep down inside  feels it is right and duty to protect those I love and those weaker than the criminals who lurk among us.  Only if there are enough guard dogs do the sheep stay safe, and police are not nearly enough.  I would say that 98% of the time, we never prevented any crime, we were respondents to a crime that had happened, but only in chance would we ever witness a serious crime like rape or murder in our presence.  That 2% would be for the LEO that happened, usually by luck, to be at the right time at the right moment.

(John 15:13)
"Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends."

Thank you all..Darth AkSarBen, p8ntgames, jmlefler.  I'll put you all down as TRMs for the SW Region.  For now this is still an informal grass-roots group.  You guys do whatever you can to get the word out.  And will be the go to contacts for people in your region.

I plan on writing a short article on OC and try and get it published in my sportsman's club's newsletter.  I will have a draft soon and have more details on encouraging other members of sportsman's clubs to do the same.

Come on people we still need help.  We are trying to get mailing addresses of all the state candidates, so we can mail a questionnaire before Sept. 15th.

Everett Hale said,
"I am only one, but I am one, I cannot do everything, but I can do something.  What I can do, I should do, with the help of God, I WILL DO!

SO come on and help!  Let me know by PM, and I will add your contact info (email, phone, etc.)  to the list and mail you the contact info on our other RTMs.  Each person can look up 15 or 20 candidates, not hard to do, I looked up my 40 candidates, well.....OK....I still have a couple to do.

All RTMs,

We can't put a title under our names, but we can put RTM before the city we are in.  See my avatar.  This will let members know who to contact in there areas.

WE STILL NEED SOME RTMS FOR the upper-lower area of Mich.

I don't think i'd help much as an RTM since I don't have a car and I'm going to be moving in approx one year to Mississippi, But I want to be notified of things going on in my region (SW) so I can help out if possible. This Feb i'll be looking into my first handgun as an 18th birthday present to myself and to help the cause.;)

Dear Members,

I believe it is worth noting that becoming a Regional Team Member or volunteer right now is a monumental moment in the OC agenda.  Doing a small amount of activist work now will prevent what may take many years to accomplish in the future.  We ask for no money, just effort!

You now have a major organization, Gun Owners Of America, behind you!  There have already been challenges we have had to face and without your help, facing them in the future will become difficult.

We need people particularly in the next 10 days to make this a reality, to gain wide support for our right to OC.  We have a fantastic opportunity where everyone on this board has been invited to meet in Lansing as the guests of some state Representatives who will host an event for us.

The event is currently being scheduled for dates from Sept. 17-21 approximately.  THIS IS A MONUMENTAL OCCASION FOR US!  Wouldn't it be nice to introduce yourself and your region to these leaders and know you have an open door with them?

GOA is making huge strides with these officials on your behalf but it can't happen WITHOUT YOU!

Seif, you are in a particular important area for us and remember, this is a national endeavor. So what you assist with here will also help you where you are going. Who knows, maybe you can carry this experience with you to help build a stronger group where you are headed but it all begins with your valuable support.

So please, EVERYONE, consider giving the next few weeks to assisting in this process even if you can never help again.  Lansing will be a huge media event and recognition at the capitol.  This is an election year and we do not always have the opportunity and invitation presented to us that we currently have.

If you don't protect this right when you can we could suffer a far worse fate of trying to recover it should it become lost.  Let's keep the momentum going forward.  Please consider helping and Joining us in Lansing as I hope you will join this grassroots effort. Thank you for your consideration,

Paul Garfield

Dear Doug and SQL,

There is still some work to be done and my point was to inspire the volunteer spirit for MOC. So far it appears we are looking at September 23rd.

I will have more informtion by Tuesday or sooner if possible.

RON G. IF YOU READ THIS PLEASE GIVE ME A CALL A.S.A.P. (248) 588-1622. Would like to go over some various info with you.

Also, anyone planning on attending I would appreciate an e mail at goarep@wowway.com . This will assist me in planning and scheduling accomodations.

OPEN letter Dear Lonnie Wilson  pm you with no reply .What would be wrong with  town hall type open meeting [VFW, library , gun shop , range etc]  educate not bash or flag wave , sent invite to police , DA ,elected and all others. Now it is open one on one dialogue for Q and A with or with out media .Laundry is in the AIR ,no question left unanswered ! No harm no foul . Power is  knowledge !!! Maybe ask for small donation for legal fund  [ 501 c 3] ,with minimal guideline [ drunk , crime ,  rape  ect] Fund for use in MICHIGAN only for start keep it local !

It would be nice to meet with local jurisdiction in person, and to visit with them about the open carry and preemption.  One will often listen to a someone in person than by merely writing or emails.  I agree, we need to educate, as also, knowledge is the subduer of fears.

Just curious. If this IS a heart felt movement of people dedicated to preserving their rights, is it necessary to convince people we NEED THEM, as the founding fahers needed support, to preserve our rights?

Come on people, this is our make or break point. I do not see any clearer way to describe it. Thanks,

Paul

That would be the GOA Representative Venator is working with in setting up the regions and RTM's.  This is discussed briefly in the first post in this thread.  Most of the other discussion is being done behind the scenes.

That said, I still have no clue what he meant in that last post or was referring to :)

Perhaps the question might be focused that one must be careful that one does not harbor information with an infiltrator.  I , for example, could work for an anit-gun loby and come in here with nice avatar and recognized group, yet not have any other interest in the group, other than passing along their plans.

Guns Of America is a recognized, grass roots Pro Gun organization listed in the NRA, founded in 1975 in Srpingfield Virginia.  I think the question was, is goarep who he says he is? Or is he someone from the "other" side?

Since our screen names and avatars are masks, in a way, the question of who he is brings something to my mind:

Who is but the form following the function of what, and what he is is a man in a mask.

"Well, I can see that," you might say.

Of course you can.  I'm not questioning your powers of observation.  I'm merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is.

Paul Garfield is having trouble with his PMs.  He gets them but can't open them.  He can reply to a sender, but can't click on a posters name and get to the PM window.  Strange.  He is using a MAC with a single click mouse does he need to do something different?? Any MAC users that can help him out.

Sounds like he might have figured it out, but you do not need to do anything different on a mac.  That's all I use.  It works so much better than Windows!;)

Brian, we were talking about me being a RTM on the phone a while back. I seem to be pretty heavily involved lately, so if there is anything useful I can do in a more official capacity, I'd be happy to do so.

I am wondering if there are any RTM's in the Gaylord area or Otsego County?  I have only oc'd twice, with O incidences, but it still makes me nervous.  I have had a CPL since 2001, but i'm still confused on where i can oc.  I need more info to become an RTM.  I am looking for a good voice recorder, on the cheep, to carry with me.  Any suggestions?
