I mentioned before, I'm gonna be in Michigan for Christmas time. I won't be taking my pistol with me (I don't trust baggage handlers) but of course that doesn't stop me from wanting to meet up with you guys.  The Coffee Beanery in Berkley invited us to come there, so I'd like to take them up on it. However, Venator said that he'd like to join us, so Brian, if you're available and can think of a place between there and lansing where we could split the difference, that would work too. Otherwise, as stated, I'm inviting anyone and everyone who is interested to meet up with me at the Coffee Beanery, located on 28557 Woodward Avenue, in Berkley, Michigan.

Hope to see yall then. :)

It's in the title, December 21. ;) Family does come first, that's why I'm visiting. So if the situation can be helped and we meet in between Lansing and Metro Detroit, I'm all for it. I'll take my brothers car, and hopefully drag him along too.:D

For you, (or mastiff, if he felt like coming out all way), I'll happily change the date, time and place. It's just that we were the first ones to meet up last year and it would be nice to see you guys again. Other than that, December 21, 1pm, in Berkley. (Although, if someone else wants to change the date so they can make it, it's not like it has to be a certain day for me)

Duh!!!!:banghead:  I'm an idiot (but still good looking.).  That date may be alright, it's before the family get-together.  I'll try and make it.

When you get a time and place set let Springer know so he can post on the events thread.

I've talked to one of the two owners of The Coffee Beanery (Greg) and he's logged the dates in his book, and he says "Let him know how many and he'll even set up a section for us".  We're more than welcome to be there. Great coffee and sandwiches.

Do we want this to be an question and answer session?  If so If someone can borrow a projector I have a power point talk I can give.  Perhaps some libraries may have them for loan.  Or we could meet at a local library and use their facilities for the session and then go to the cafe for food and beverages.  Michigander are you the lead on this? Thoughts???

Well, I think I might be able to borrow a projector.  If I can, and we want to use it, I'll most likely attend.  I love cafe food anyway. :)

Thant's encouraging.  We have to hear from Michigander if he wants to have a large crowd and use it to educate or just to have a few OC friends meet and have lunch and BS a bit.

Draw as big of a crowd as you want and do whatever, I'm only telling you guys that I'll be there. As most here know, my only stipulation is that I don't want to be photographed, or have my name publicly recorded.  (yes I know I'm paranoid :?)

I was thinkin about how you said this yesterday as I was hiking in the White Tank Mountains, looking at some nice beautiful mountains covered in smog. You'd probably be happier going to Tucson. ;)

Also, consider a tin-foil hat to keep your thoughts from being recorded/manipulated by the gummint or aliens.

It's not paranoia if they're really after you.

I think I recall a while ago actually seeing a study that said that a tin foil hat would actually protect your brain from excess radio frequencies.

Well guys and gals, I'm moving back to Michigan for a while for a number of reasons, probably for a year or a year and a half. I don't really want to, I've fallen in love with he South West and have every intention of going back as soon as it's feasible, but right now it's the most sensible option to head back to the damp, fridged flatness that is south east Michigan. I look forward to being not only at this event, but plenty of others. :)

I'd venture to say that you could do a presentation without a projector. Handouts alone, even just a page or 2, could be enough information for a basic presentation. After that, a question and answer session could clear up any lingering confusion.

I'd love it if we had a projector, but it might be best to wait a while. Them suckers are pricey.

Most places now-a-days have TV's and most computers have video-out.... whats the issue?

That may work.  What connections would I need?

A screen is just bigger and easier to see from the back row and we can project it on the wall.  Interesting though, I'll look into it.

It might work assuming the TV has the right inputs (or the laptop has the right outputs, but that's less likely I think).  Problem with most TV's, at least older ones, is you'll really only get like 640x480 resolution through them.  I think it would do the job, it just might not be that pretty.

I'll work on it.  The place isn't big enough to need a PA is it?  Or does it have one?

Michiganger said it was similar to the Monroe cafe.  They have a small stage and sound system so I think we are covered there.

OK, I have a projector.  I'll try to borrow a screen too, so we don't have to try to find a big white wall.  Whatever laptop we use, we just need to make sure it has at least a VGA output.

Oh, by the way, I can only use the projector if it won't be smoky... I'm assuming the cafe is smoke-free?

We can use the back of our banner for a screen, it should work well.

Well, it would work, and we can turn it over when we're done with the presentation.  I'll see about a screen, and if I can't get one, we'll definitely use the banner.

No such things as noobies around here. I like to think that all fellow Michigan gun owners who haven't been around here before are merely unmet friends.

About the meeting, I should finally be able to go and scope the place out tomorrow, talk to the owner, and get back to ya'll with some info.

It's a nice place, that Coffee Beanery. Had the pleasure of meeting Nervisrek when I visited earlier tonight. :)

Plenty of parking space, although if it's crowded they ask that people park on the street and walk a ways if they are going to be there a while. But since it will be sunday, it shouldn't matter so much. Between the rather large parking lot and street parking space, it won't be a problem. There is also lots of space inside. We will need to bring some sort of screen to go with the projector, but they do have a sound system. It will be easy to have an audience of as many as 80 people viewing the projector screen in the back area.

Great food too. Compared to some other coffee places I've been to, I think they have better tasting food and drinks for less money. When in the area I will be making more visits.

I told Greg that I would call him a few days ahead of time to give him an idea of how many people will go for sure, so anyone who plans on going who hasn't already said so, please post. Granted if they give us a news article promoing the event we will have no idea, but it would still be nice to try and fabricate a good estimate so Greg can reserve us a proper amount of space.

Count me as a "most likely", along with my sister, and each of us with our curtain climbers, one each.

Welcome to OCDO ISMOID.  I added you to the list for December 21st.

Add my wife and a friend to the list too.
Thanks for the welcome. I have been snooping around here for a while before I finally registered.

OK! I convinced my wife to let me come.... So long as I leave her at IKEA in Canton for the duration.

I may be a bit late, as Church, IKEA, and the Beanery are all spread out a ways, but I'll be there!

I don't think I'll have my holster in the mail yet (Serpa!), so I won't be carrying. But I'll be there.

Ziggy, not that it's important or anything because obviously carrying isn't the point of the meetings, but I could hook you up with a spare holster for the event if you'd like. At this point I've got 3 holsters and one handgun. I don't know what kind of gun you have, but if it's a full size-ish revolver or semi auto, I have one that would work.

I carry a Glock 17. Heck, I don't even have a gun belt! Just a sturdy leather one.

(If you can't tell, I'm a rather new owner... I've used guns since I was young, just never carried before)

That would for sure fit in at least 2 holsters I have. Unless you're really scared about someone going for a grab (a billion to one odds that would happen in the coffee shop) and you want to wait for your retention holster, I've got ya covered. Up to you obviously, just do whatever you want. It's not a terrible idea to skip it this time if you aren't comfortable with the idea, nothing wrong with taking things slowly and carefully in regards to firearms. Plus it's not like security will be an issue. ;)

A strudy leather belt of any kind will work great usually. I use a tool belt most days so I can carry my gun. 6 bucks, fits inside my belt loops just perfectly, and damn sturdy!

While I agree that security will not likely be an issue, you should always be aware of your surroundings.  This goes double if in a crowded coffee shop, for example.  Anytime I have been approached I have seen it coming from at least 20 feet away and have been able to square myself to the approaching individual.  I live in a small town, and I won't have the luxury of space when I go to Berkeley.  Therefore, I will have my 1911 in a Serpa CQC.

See you there,

Houghton to Berkley?

Seriously? I won't tell you not to, but geeze dude. Hope you'll be bringing some other people with you or something. That's one huge drive for one little event. I'm gonna try to organize something in the northern lower peninsula after it warms up. possibly in Grayling. If you'd prefer that, it would be a hell of a lot less of a drive.

Just FYI - I'd be game for a Grayling event.

Also, I still plan on bringing a projector.  We have a laptop right?

I was born in Madison Heights and my folks still live there.  I'm coming down for Christmas tomorrow and will be in town anyway.  There's no way I would drive 9 hours just for a quick cup of coffee!  The wife may come along too, but she still isn't real comfortable with OC.  Academically she agrees with it, but she feels like we will get hassled if I do it.  Nearly 6 months now, and aside from a chat with the chief of police at a parade there have been no problems.

Being a Sysadmin, I carry a laptop more often than I carry a wallet. I'll probably have mine there, too.

Looks like we may have okay weather on Sunday.  If you plan on coming, why not bring a couple of friends that are interested in OC.  Let's have a decent crowd on hand.

I have yet to drive today, but from my front window, Flint roads seem to be in good condition. They've plowed my road FIVE TIMES since it quit snowing.:?    As to Woodward, my 13 thousand dollar Cherokee whizzed past a countless number of 60 thousand dollar road blockages yesterday! :celebrate

Not to be humorous ,many side roads are blocked by delivery and personal autos. Driver that will remain unnamed stated his last 16 hr shift after snow emergency was declared two days earlier  burred more than one hundred autos in Wayne county on main drags . These are six lane with center left turn that as of two hrs ago are and will remain until Monday pm no overtime the same two trackers .:uhoh:

I worked in Birmingham yesterday, and saw the chaos. I don't mean to be fecetious about the stuck people... I helped several people on the way home yesterday. One actually required the use of a tow strap.  Am I to understand that those 6 lane two-tracks will remain unplowed until Monday? That sucks.

I was driving around yesterday in my friend's Focus. The only way I could get around without getting stuck in the side streets was to ignore stop signs and do hand brake turns. But it was FUN!!!

They do have woodward pretty well cleared off today though.

Yes ! Wayne , Oakland Monroe and Washtenaw will not plow ANY overtime other than I75,us23.I275.I94, I696 ,I96 ,I375 ,us24 but then you can not enter or exit due to road blockage from main plowing .

Thx for the spellcheck, Taxwhat. (facetious vs fecetious) I hate bad spelling. Michigander, my e-brake doesn't work well, so I can't have that kind of fun. I envy you!

I just drove from Ann Arbor to Howell on 14, 23, and 96 without issue. Side roads aren't bad at all. Roads are generally clear, aside from a few off-the-beaten-path roads.

PLEASE don't anyone go out of your way if you're not real comfortable with the driving conditions.  It isn't worth an accident.

It's not exactly hard to plan future meetings, and I'm sure that they wouldn't mind repeat business if we come back later. ;)

I'm still of course going to be there. I'll try to be there half an hour or so early. I look forward to seeing those of you who can make it. :)

I know how to drive, I'll be there. I like driving in the snow.

I have to run by the shop first and pick up the t-shirts and my laptop then I'll head up southfield fwy.

I rally wanted to make this, but I haven't been feeling well all day.  Sorry I missed it.

Well, I think we had a pretty good showing with the roads the way they were.  My drive wasn't that fun from Frankenmuth, but I made it.  It was good to see everybody today.  Hope to see you all in Frankenmuth on the 27th!

All things considered, it was a good turn out. There were enough people there for it to feel like a decent crowd, but at the same time it was small enough for everyone to get to talk to everyone.

Many thanks to Nervisrek, and to Greg for hosting us.

I was impressed at the turnout, and am glad I now have some faces to put with some names here. My sister learned a lot from Venator's presentation, and is even more geeked about being able to carry. As for as me, yesterday was the first time I carried THAT openly. I carried in the open one time pumping gas, when I didn't even go into the store. Something about my particular combination of motorcycle boots and numerous tattoos has me a little extra nervous about making a habit of it. People look at me funny as it is!     Anyway, it was good to meet you all, and I'll be seeing you at more.

Zzz, I'd love to see some of the pics you snapped.

Carry on

I'd like to hear from those that saw the webcast...did it work OK? I'll bring a better mic next time I promise...

I'll get to those pics soon.

so we had a total of 8 unique viewers for the 1hr. 45 min. recording.

I'm going to share the details with how to do this process so that all of our meetings (regardless of whether I'm there) can be recorded. All you need is a mic and a cam (or a mac that has both built-in) and you're off to the races.

Yea, I like the idea if we have interest.  Any of the events I show up to I can hook us up with this. (I'm much more handy with a computer than a projector I've never played with before ;)  Sorry guys)

If we want something a little better, I can probably hook us up with my digital video camera, and we can broadcast with that.  I would only suggest this for something bigger and more "official", like we had in Monroe.

Currently investigating how this might be accomplished. Apparently ustream only allows for one main host, but that main host can add cohosts to the live show as it happens (basically, I can add users but I have to be the one to do it, and I'd have to do it every time we have an event).

Sooo I'm looking into alternatives. I'd like to keep it condensed to the same URL every time, but we could potentially create a new show for every event... allowing any user to just make one and hit broadcast.

Perhaps you and SQLtables can work on this together and come up with something that is easy to do and will work out the best for MOC.  I think you both have been nominated to be MOC's IT guys.:D  Any other IT people want to help them?

Was never able to get any audio, like I said tho, my brother in law lives in the sticks and only has satelite internet available to Him, and the speed is not that great, a little bit better than dial up. Video was pretty good.

At the meeting, I recall someone asking about reciprocity of the Michigan CPL. This is the website I was referring to which has a handy reciprocity map:

http://apps.carryconcealed.net/legal/reciprocity.php

Simply click on your home state, and all the reciprocating states are highlighted. You can also look at Michigan's specific Concealed Carry info Here.

I had a nice time there. I had to leave earlier than I would have liked though. Great presentation but I wish I could have stayed longer to meet more of the group.
