The second Saturday of every month.  Locations TBD.

_______________________________________________________

The only difficult part will be selecting a time or place.

I feel the weekends would be better for everyone, and those who have any distance to travel will then be able to with less restriction I hope.

Some possible restraunts include:

Cici's Pizza

Golden Corall

A good old fassion outside in the cold cook-out

.....I'm out of ideas, but open to suggestion.

Some possible dates would be  (and/or for local people):

Friday December 5

Saturday December 6

Sunday December 7

Friday December 12

Saturday December 13

Sunday December 14

January 10th weekend if farther out.

I would personally be fine with multiple gatherings at multiple restraunts.

I propose Cicis in Cary on Saturday December 13th for a late lunch. That or Sunday so DreQo will come.

If you make it the weekend of the 13th, you better bring me presents.  My b-day is that weekend!  Honestly if I was going to come out that far to hang with you guys, it would have to be on a Sunday.  That's the only day I have off every week.

The last time we had a get-together out here, it was only like 4 or 5 guys.  I'm not gonna drive 3 hours for that, lol.  If there's enough of a response, I'll consider it, though!  :)

I've tried to coordinate something for Raleigh/Cary, but didn't get much of a response.  It's very difficult to get everyone's schedule coordinated for one date.

Why don't we just try a monthly meeting?  Say every 2nd Saturday or Sunday of the month, or every 3rd Saturday or Sunday, or something like that.  That way, we all know what the date is going to be every month.  The group outings may be small at first, but I guarantee once the word gets out that we're meeting on a regular basis, and everyone has time to plan, the meetings will get bigger.

We can change the restaurant each month too.  We have a few options that don't serve alcohol:

Golden Coral
CiCi's
Boston Market
5 Guys
Chick-Fil-A
IHOP
Panera
Panda Express
Andy's
Bear Rock Cafe
Jason's Deli
Bob Evans

I'm leaving town till after the first of January on December 10th, but I would love to attend any event prior to that day. I second the idea that the event needs to occur in Cary (for obvious reasons). I would also like to see one in Fuquay-Varina as soon as possible. The police there are using the standard harass & bluff game to discourage open carry. We need to meet that challenge and not back down !

The police are not the State legislature and/ or State Supreme Court . They are to enforce the LAW not their personal opinion or the preferences of their police chief.

DreQo, if you make it up for the 13th, I'll buy you dinner for your birthday.

This sounds like a great idea! All those places arent too far for me, and I'm sure we will have pretty good attendance. So, they first date will be?

Every second Saturday.  That would make the meet on Sat, Dec. 13th.

I have posted this on the other three sites that I frequent.

A lot of people have told me that sunday is for family.  Go figure, I don't have any around here.

We could eat a dinner on the 13th, say 7pm.  That will give everyone plenty of time to get here.

So Cicis Pizza in Cary.

683-F Cary Towne Blvd - Cary, NC 27511 US

7:00 PM Saturday December 13th

DreQo, I can offer you a place to crash as well if need be.  Its a couch but it is very comfortable.

We will hold you to that and expect you to make the trip up. :celebrateIt sure will be great to meet some of you folks. We need to get North Carolina whipped into shape like Northern Virginia. The guys up there have really done an incredible job. Much of the credit for that goes to the founders of this site. You don't realize how important this movement is until you are dealing with authorities that are clueless with respect to the law.

We must stand together and preserve our individual rights COLLECTIVLY as a group.

Lets plan on the date posted and do this, time to get the ball rolling !

I'm excited!  I think the "every 2nd Saturdayof the month" will work nicely, as it gives everyone time to plan.  It also keeps us from having to see who can and can't make it on a certain date.

We'll just change up the location each month, and have a good time!

Edit:   This CiCi's is a little difficult to find, if you haven't been there before.  It actually faces Maynard Rd, and it's right behind the Mcdonald's and the Cary Fire Station...

Gas money permitting, I'll be there.  If prices were still at $4+ a gallon I wouldn't have even considered it! lol

I hear that !

Occasionally I run jobs in FayettNAM and hated the thought of $20 in gas just to drive there.

Sorry guys, I would love to come, but I'll be at work (only a couple minutes from there) until 10:30.

However, I'll be sure to talk off the second Saturday of every month from now on!

I'm in.  Depending on her schedule, my wife may be as well.

ETA:  How about the Arby's on Capital Boulevard, just South of 540?   Another forum member had an issue there very recently:

We can eat here on Jan 10, or at the Waffle House that a member had issues at.

I will be at PDSHC in Garner around 3:00 if anyone is interested in some range time before the dinner.

Are you guys planning to call ahead and/or talk to the manager about your plans to OC.  'Just curious.

And I'll try to come by while you're there. I don't know if I'll be OC'ing but I would like to say hello.

Better to ask for forgiveness than permission, I say ;).  Seriously, though, asking permission implies that they should have a reason to say no.  There's nothing illegal, dangerous, or inappropriate about carrying, so there's no reason to ask.

I may call and set up a birthday party for DreQo, but I won't be mentioning the OC meet.  As DreQo said, there is nothing illegal or alarming about what we are doing, so there is no need to ask permission.

We definitely don't want to call the manager and ask for permission. We should just show up OCing, order our meals and conduct ourselves as ladies & gentlemen quietly enjoying a meal and fellowship. They will he happy to have our business.

We should have a video camera and audio recorders at ready in case uninvited open carrying quests arrive (Cary PD) . Someone that is not open carrying with the video recorder would be excellent. I'm I expecting problems ? No, but I wasn't expecting problems at Arby's either and look what happen there.

Looking forward to meeting all of you folks, this has been a long time coming and is going to be a great meet.

I'll have a Zoom H2 recorder and a covert microphone.  I've also got a small (pocket size) HD video recorder.  I will also be carrying a Commander Bobtail.

ETA: I can loan the recorders to someone who isn't carrying.

Looking at coming as I would like to meet as many ppl as possible and having a large group is always good. Might not be carrying (my pistol has not arrived yet) so I should be available as an "observer".

I wasn't trying to imply that the meeting is anything but lawful and reasonable. I support you 100%.

:D

But as we all know, some people are not always reasonable. And having a camera sounds like good idea... just in-case.

Today, we got invited to a family supper with two other families but 'll try to come by the OC meeting, if only for a few minutes.

And I want to join future OC dinners as well.

Have fun and let us know how it goes.

Keep in contact with one of us, as we may move on to a bar afterwards if we're all up for it ;);).  If ya'll are gonna make it a b-day party for me, I'm gonna make sure I have some fun! lol

Anyway I definitely will be there.  I'll have my SW99, a voice recorder, and maybe even an unbreakable umbrella :D.

im only about 40-45 mins. from Cary (that's when i'm riding the speed limit), and i'd certainly like to come out, but my work and school schedule (although today WAS my last day of this semester) is so time consuming that i can hardly commit to anything anymore.

i wish i had more time for myself..

Are these events always going to be in the Raleigh area, or is this a state-wide thing?  I'd love to block off a night per month to a local gathering.

I would wager that the second saturday of every month would be a Raleigh/ Garner/ Cary/ Apex thing.  Any place that is within 30-45 minutes of Raleigh.

I have no problem with taking the third saturday for Charlotte or some other city within 3-4 hours of here.

The first Saturday of every month could be an eastern NC thing.  Like in Jacksonville, New Bern, or out by the beach.  I've been seeing a lot more guys in the J-ville area popping up on here, after all.

Awesome.  I'll get my wife to make sure she's off for the Raleigh meets... We could make her the designated not-carrying person with audio & video at the ready, should it be needed.

Great to meet all of you folks ! We definitely should make it a monthly dinner and move it around. Maybe even have one in DREqo's  area sometime. We appreciate the fact that you drove 3 hours to support the meet.

I think the next one should be at the Capital Blvd.  Arbys or maybe have them cater it, LOL.

To all those that claim carrying in CARY is a problem, seven people proved that false.

Thanks for coming out everyone !

Me and my girlfriend had a great time.  Yeah, I know, she needs to carry, but being from New Jersey, it is hard to convince her.  I am working on it though.  I guess I am lucky that she does not give me any grief for carrying myself.

It was great to finally meet some of you guys, but I can say that you do worry me.   :)  I think tonight was a success and look forward to our next meeting.

It was great meeting everyone tonight.

For all of those who didn't make it out, there is always January.

We will be working on setting up a monthly meet for eastern and western NC as well.

Congratulations on a successful meet 'n greet.

In Richmond Va. we have a long standing 2nd Tuesday of each month OC dinner.

We are always open to suggestions but never put it to a vote as to where we eat - it takes too long and you can never satisfy everybody.  We operate as an unofficial committee/sponsor.   Others are welcome to set up/run their own meet-up if they wish - more than one is good - Va. has at least 3 of which I am aware.  Ours has from 10 to 20+ each month.  Encourage guests and newbies.

http://opencarry.mywowbb.com/forum54/19097-2.html

We also do an much more informal OC breakfast each Sat AM.

Select a location that you have checked out/tested as OC friendly - never ask permission.  Announce the time and place, request confirmation and enjoy.  If you build it they will come.

We had a short discussion about Chapel Hill open carry and thier 6'' requirement.

A compact Glock (23) has a 7'' long slide, and if you measure to the angle of the backstrap, then it is 6.2''.

So you can OC a Compact Glock and I'm sure other brands as well.

Ok, I know we have not officially stated where the next event will be, but we may also want to remember to figure out how to recognize each other. Since it may be cold, and many of us have CCP, we may be wearing jackets and it may not be possible to just identify by looking... correct, Dreqo? :)

True.  I found yelling "Hey!  Is that legal?!" at anyone with a lump on their hip to be a effective tactic lol.

EDIT: GF won't be coming now.  Staying in Charlotte to study for the CPA exam. Oh well.

I'll see if my wife is up for it.

Actually, I know she'll be interested; it's just whether she'll feel like it at the end of a six-day work week.

My real problem will be: how to get her a holster on short notice for her new Christmas revolver so she can OC, too,  without running afoul of the CC laws that apply to car carry, since she doesn't yet have her CHP.

Guess I could carry it for her in the car (I have my CHP), then give it to her once we exit the vehicle.  If you see a woman strapping on a gun in the parking lot, don't call the cops: that's us.

Hi Fahrenheit,

I know of no law that says you can't OC in your car.  Just have her strap it on  OC style or lay it on the seat.:D

I am sure other posters will chime in on this as well.

Call up the guys over at Gunners Alley

http://www.gunnersalley.com/

They will probably be able to get you a holster pretty quick if they dont already have one in stock...plus they are local (across from the amtrak station/pure gold in Cary)

My dad and I have both bought holsters from them.
Though, they were shipped to Charlotte because of my dad :banghead:.
Good prices and nice people.

The OC meeting is coming up in TWO days.  Hope to see everyone there.

There were 7 people there tonight as well.  It was fun.  NO issues with OC there.

This needs EVERYONE'S attention.  The next schedule meeting is Feb 14th, which is Valentines day.  This will probably be an for those of us with significant others.

I propose that we change the date for this meeting to the FIRST week of February.
This would be February 7th.

Is that acceptable to everyone?

That was a good meet-up.  I'm on board for February 7th.  I recall others having issues at various Waffle House restaurants within the state and have read they as a corporation take issue with firearms.

There are two Waffle Houses in the area.  One is on Capital Boulevard by 440 and another is by RDU.

I'd like to suggest we put the Waffle House on our list of places to visit, and will leave the scheduling to others.

Just to add...there's an additional Waffle House right off of I-440 on Hillsborough Street near Meredith College and NC State Univ.  I'm not sure whether or not that would be a more convenient location for those coming into town from the south or west.

I recommend that we eat at the Hillsborough Street Waffle House on February 7th.  If someone would like to have this at a different location I am fine with that.  I am not the sole discression on where we eat.  There is a Capitol Blvd location, Cary location, and another Raleigh location

 Waffle House
(919) 833-1247
3909 HILLSBOROUGH ST
RALEIGH, NC 27607

Then I recommend that we eat at:  : on March 14th

Charley's Grilled Subs @http://www.charleyssteakery.com

2526 Hillsborough St
Raleigh, NC 27607
(919) 828-1006

This is a location directly across from NCSU.  I would like for this to be the biggest turn-out that we have had.  This stems greatly from comments made by the NCSU police chief.  We WILL NOT be on campus, just across the street.

I do like waffle house myself, and Charley's has a decent Philly Steak and Cheese.

There are better places to eat, but they serve alcohol.  I am fine with going to Cracker Barrel in April.

I guess you have to ask yourself what the purpose of OC Meets are.  Is it to thumb the noses at businesses who "take issue with firearms", and cause a legal fuss?  Or is it to show the community that people who carry firearms are normal folk who just happen to carry guns?

Cause it seems to me, those two goals work at cross purposes.

If y'all want to focus on going to businesses who have been reported as firearms-hostile, or to locations where you're tweaking the nose of law enforcement, that's certainly your right.   It's just not what I'm interested in.

We select locations on people preference, and based on establishments that are both pro-carry (don't care) or anit-carry (make a fuss).  We have now met at one of each of the above categories.  In general, it doesn't matter where we go, as it is 100% legal.  People generally fear what they don't know, and we can help educate others.

The two purposes your proposed do not have to work against eachother.  There is also the fact that not all managers behave the same way, even on subsequent visits.  There were no problems or negative comments made at the last meeting at Arby's.  I'm KNOW we will visit establishments/ management that feel in polar opposite manners throughout our OC dinners.

I have been to a couple of Waffle Houses (Homes?) :) and noticed that they do have signage stating that no firearms are allowed. Now the interesting point about these signs are that they are usually on a large metal sign near the top right corner of the restaurant on the side you enter on. Along with the no skateboarding, loitering and others. Where some may argue it is not posted correctly, as it is easily missed, it is posted... Take from this what you may.

I am thinking one place to visit would be BoJangle's on 54/55 in Durham. Some of you know that I have been having a part time fight with BoJangle's management in Raleigh as they are all posted no firearms. They state that their legal department suggest putting them up as it should make the restauarants safer. I guess that's why the BoJangle's on Tarboro Rd. was paying for a uniformed officer to be there fulltime at night for a few years.

However, the BoJangle's on 54/55 only posts No Concealed Firearms. Not sure how they would know if it was truly concealed. Again, a different argument. Maybe we should go there and show the Raleigh BoJangle's that just the presence of a firearm makes for a dangerous situation.

Eveyone, I'm new to the group and am loving the forum.

I've eaten at the BoJangle's at 40/42 many times and haven't seen a "no firearms" sign.  Come to think of it I've also visited the one on Highway 64 in Cary as well.  I don't recall seeing one there either.

I make a point to check for these as I also have a CHP.  Where the heck are they posting them?  Do I need glasses??

The BoJangle's in Raleigh have them all posted on the outside door or somewhere on the glass near the doors, along with no skateboards, no loitering, etc...  If you are not seeing them in other locations, that is good.  More for my continued fight with the local BoJangle's....

I checked the Bojangle's on Western Blvd. yesterday and they have a sign posted saying "NO CONCEALED WEAPONS", which of course means it won't affect any of our plans. :D  And since I haven't heard a reply, I'll check Waffle House today, also.

Waffle house has a no firearms sign over the grill once you walk inside.

We will need to change locations for the meeting on the 7th.
Do I have any proposals?

 Do you have dates set?

I would be happy to post on my web site.

http://www.concealnc.com

I would do what I can to bring folks, or maybe host an event in Salisbury or Kannapolis areas too.

I for one would love to work on getting some of the laws changed.

Let me know what you think about the idea. steeley@carolina.rr.com

My wife and I are on for this Weekend at Crazy Fire.  She's been looking forward to it for some time now.

It will be her first carry experience, OC or CC, so I expect her to have the usual "everybody's looking at me" jitters.

She is going to love it + wives and GFs or extremely good advertising.  Its a win-win.

It was a good turn out tonight.  We had some good conversation and met some new faces.

I talked with a couple of the uneducated persons about the fact that there was, in fact, a gun on my hip.  Also discussed the legality of doing so, and that if he has some criminal charges from his youth, it may impact his ability to carry, but he should talk to someone that isn't me about that.

Any recommendations for where we should meet next month (March 14th)?

That would be my wife and I.

It was pretty much what I expected.  Pretty much what my wife expected, too.

Only comment she had was that she'd hoped that the conversation, at SOME point in the evening, would have drifted away from, as she put it "Guns guns guns".

lol Well I wasn't there this time, but that's how it was last time, too.  Not surprising though, considering that's the one thing we all immediately have in common.  That, and we've been beaten into only discussing firearms and 2A related topics by the ruthless moderators of this forum :P.

there were 6 people that showed up to this meet.

I had a conversation with a guy in line about:

Yes, it is a gun

Yes, it is legal

No, you don't need a permit to OC

..... are some of the laws on OC and CC and ..... is how you get a firearm

Will a criminal record from 'my younger days' prohibit me from getting a firearm?  I replied that he should probably talk to somebody else about that.

Oh, I understand WHY that's the primary topic.  We're meeting with other people who share our enthusiasm for firearms, and, at least at first, we don't really have anything else in common with them.  And perhaps, for some of us, outside of internet forums, meetings like this are the only time we get to hang out with other firearms enthusiasts.

But people overhear our conversations.  For every opportunity we have to directly talk to a person about firearms, there's probably a table or two at the restaurant who have noticed we're carrying, are watching and listening, but will never approach us.  If all they hear us talking about is "Guns Guns Guns", we're just reinforcing the stereotype; if they hear us talking about mid-term exams, how much we hate our jobs, or the joys of child-rearing, we might start to change perceptions.

There's also the more casual-enthusiasts among us - spouses and significant others, whose presence increases our "normal" factor way, way up.  I sat across from one of the people who was there with her boyfriend.  She seemed to politely endur the conversation until about 2/3 of the way through.  Maybe I noticed because I was sitting directly across from her; maybe I just didn't read her facial expressions right; maybe she wasn't feeling well, or had somewhere else to be: but she seemed bored.  And every time the conversation started to drift toward a non-gun-related topic, her interest increased.  Then, before the conversation really took off in that non-gun direction, it got rather forcefully snapped right back to fixed-site rifles performing head-sized shots at 800 yards, or pistol-shots at 80 yards, or the volley-fire potential of the M-1 Garand.  Sure, these can be interesting topics, but there's a time and place for everything.

Cmon now, My only topics I can hold forth on are guns, books, and computer games. Talking about elevators is to much like work. Now we just need to find a nice books tore with a decent lounge area. Open carry book clubs are yet another way to get more people seeing peaceful armed citizens.

Hey, just discovered this forum. I'd love to participate in an OC event on March 14th if that's still in the works. Has anyone considered creating a Meetup group dedicated to OC in the Triangle area?

I tend to enjoy it.  Normally a few times a day, in fact.  It seems like a perfectly practical way to ingest necessary nutrients.  ;)

I just happened to have went to Golden Corral this weekend, in Garner, and had a very positive experience.  The wait staff and employees, other than one cook, paid no attention to my weapon to the best of my knowledge.  However, there were a couple of customers that stopped me in the parking lot and asked me about it.

They were from Maryland and just moved down here, and they thought that you had to have a permit to open carry.  I explained to them about needing a permit to purchase (unless you have a concealed carry permit) and a permit to carry concealed, but how open carry was legal without a permit, in certain areas, due to the fact that North Carolina was in essence, an Open Carry state.

All in all a positive experience.  I even went to the BoJangle's that I recently had an issue with and had no incidents.

Well my apologies to all who showed up.  I was truly wanting to meet y'all.  Hope those that did show up had a good time,  ate well,  and had a great discussion(s).

It turned out we had a very dear friend celebrate a B-day today,  and as time slipped by realized we couldn't get there from Garner party in time.

I will make it one of these days.....,  just not sure when.

We were all a little dissapointed with the turn out.  Lots of people said they would be there, and very few were.

Yeah,

With 4 of us there, it was kind of a small turnout.  Luckily the four was me and my girl, and JDriver and his lady friend, so it looked like two couples going out for dinner, that just happened to be armed.  The cool thing about it though was JDriver's lady friend was armed, and looked comfortable to entire time.

We need to get more commitment of people.  It seems that each month we have at least a dozen people saying they will be there and then not even half of them show up.

One thing that was interesting was we left a little after 8 pm and the attempted robbery/shooting happened at the Honey Baked Ham right down the street about 30 minutes after we left Golden Corral.

^great summary of the evening.

Next months meeting is the 9th.

Location: TBD.
It is sad that we had the best turn out at CiCis.

I'll be headed down to Jacksonville for their OC dinner next weekend.
I have room for one more if anyone is interested in riding down with me.

That brings up a good point.  I wonder if people aren't showing up due to the relative cost of past few locations?

I mean, I love Crazy Fire, and Bob Evans serves breakfast all day, so they have my vote... and Golden Corral has... selection, I suppose.  But they're all about twice as much money as Cici's.

Oh, and check your pm, J.

It was the night before Easter, one of the two busiest days of the year.  They may have stayed open late.

Nevertheless, about 20 years ago I worked at a HBH.  It takes quite a while to clean up, especially on such a busy day.

CiCi's... hmm. Not really crazy about the food, but the staff was very friendly, and it was the best turnout ever. It seemed to be a popular choice. Too bad that the places I like serve alcohol.

It doesn't have to be Cici's.  It can be somewhere else.  We just need to decide soon.

There is also Chick-fil-a, China King, and subway in Crossroads, though they all need to be checked for signage.

I eat at Chik-Fil-A there a few times a week, and have never seen a sign.

I'm up for anywhere.  Less expensive is better - There may be an inverse correlation between turnout and the cost of dinner.

Never mind me... I just found out that I have to go to a graduation party on Saturday, and I don't know exactly when yet. My nephew is graduating from NC State. :celebrate

I just found out that I won't be able to make it either.  My best friend is graduating and I have a graduation party that I had a temporary memory lapse about.

I also have graduation festivities to attend.  If I can make it out in time, I'll head over.  No promises, though.

In that case, I'm going to CiCi's on Saturday, and if anyone can make it, feel free to join me.

As the Guinnis people say: "Genious"

I won't be able to make the dinner if it is on the 16th.

How about everyone else.  If more people can make it, then lets move it for you guys (and gals?).

Saturday June 13th is the next OC dinner.
I will be in San Francisco at that point, so it will be up to everyone else for this one.

How about Crowleys on Medlin Drive in Raleigh? Quiet out of the way good food, beer and cheap.

Umm... the only problem I see with that suggestion is... beer.

The one's I know of:

Cici's Pizza
Crazy Fire
Any fast food
I Love NY Pizza

If you have a suggestion, please let me know ASAP!

I can't make it this month.  I'll be halfway to Florida.  Unfortunately, instead of staying there for a week or more, I'll be turning around and coming back right away.

5 of us total showed up. Manager type at the CrazyFire was all suspicious of us and had the wait staff keep and eye on us.

The next dinner is July 11th.

Hopefully we will have a good turn out.  One or more of the owners of Gunners Alley will be there, and I am bringing out the SCCC crowd as well.  I'm working on getting more people currently.

I'm going to say CiCis in Cary again.  It has the best turn out.

Now for the surprise:

Pizza for the first 20 people will be free.

There will be more people there as the SCCC crew should be there as well.

Cici's Pizza in Cary, Corner of Walnut Street & Cary Town Center Drive.  It's behind the McDonald's and Fire Station.

Starts at 7p.m., Saturday the 11th.

I am working with some local area vendors to try and get some free give-aways of gift certificates or coupons for the stores.

some store owners said they would be present as well.

I'll be at PDHSC at 3pm on thursday if anyone is interested.

damn, I have at least 2 newbie folks I am trying to intro to shooting, have yet to find time to range trip with them. May end up taking them to the country range, as pdhsc price is a bit high when you are letting somebody new try a gun for the first time. And why you always got to be there so early man? us 7-4 working folks take a while to go pick up the ammo cases and make it to the range......

I'm unemployed till late August, and get bored during the day.  Besides, when I go, there is usually no one there.  It allows me to practice better.

I'm up for going twice in a day if people want to show up at 6.
seems like there is some interest in a PDHSC meet some time before the OC dinner as well.

I should be there this weekend.  The last one (at Crazy Fire) was quite amusing with the manager/wait staff being a little freaked out!  How is PDHSC on weekends now?  Last time I went, it was a 3 hour wait... that may make it difficult to do a range day before an OC dinner.

It is always crowded, but if I show up at 1, I'll be on the lanes by 1:45, and then done around 3.  We can have multiple people on the lanes, and we could even go to the left side.

We had 15+1 in attendance tonight (15 adults and one child), which was awesome.
Congratulations to abbradsh for winning the gift certificate to Gunner's Alley. http://www.gunnersalley.com

Next month we will be giving away either a gift card to DPHSC, Davi's, or Beltman Belt if the attendance is again over 15.

I had a nice conversation with an older couple about what we are doing and etc.  They were very supportive and just curious as to why we had guns.  Turns out they were both military at some point.
There were a few questions and odd looks, but overall it was a successful event.
I think the management really likes us there, though i'm not sure if it is the bump in business, or an actual appreciation.

Planning hasn't started yet for this months location but the meets normally occur on the second Saturday of each month (which would make the next one Aug 8).  If you have suggestions for new restaurants please feel to post them as we are open to pretty much any reasonably priced establishment that isn't posted and doesn't serve alcohol.

Lets get the planning started for the next event. I'm guessing it would be August 8th unless there is a large number of people that can't make it. It is only about a week until then so let the planning commence.

Location suggestions/preferences? JDriver1.8T, did you have any ideas or plans for this month?

I've been busy with my wedding planning, and some actual work came my way, so I haven't had much chance to do anything.

I'm fresh out of ideas for new places to eat dinner.  I propose a Cracker Barrel.

August 8th at 7:00 pm is the standard meeting.

I vote +1 for cracker barrel.  Country Boy breakfast makes me happy and fat.

Country Boy Breakfast, which offers your choice of country ham, pork chops or steak grilled to order, three eggs cooked to order, fried apples, hashbrown casserole, grits, gravy, homemade buttermilk biscuits, real butter, and preserves or what they call Jam n’ Apple butter.

I propose here:

Cracker Barrel

955 Airport Blvd
Morrisville, NC 27560-9194
Exit 284, I-40 & Airport Blvd
284
(919) 463-9222

Are there any objections?  If none by tomorrow afternoon, I will spread the word.

Is that Cracker Barrel, or the Airport Mall Food Court?

Cause the Food Court is posted "No Concealed", so we might have issues there.

So, the Cracker Barrel then?  All I see in your earlier post is an address, not a restaurant name.

Exit I-40 at exit 284, go down the hill (away from the airport) about 1/2 mi. and the restaurant is on the right.   Usually pretty busy, owing to the largish hotels nearby.

BTW, has anyone OCed in there already, i.e. individually?

I actually frequent that Cracker Barrel, as I only work about 1/2 mile away from it.  I've OC'd there once or twice, without incident.  Of course, that may just mean that I wasn't noticed.

So who is going to make it?  I'd like to have a turn out like last month, though I was unable to get a raffle for this time.  I will try and have one for next month.

I will be there, with my fiance.

I had planned to make it but had to run a defective Ruger 22/45 MkIII (purchased this morning, tested this afternoon) back to the Raleigh gun show.  Fortunately the vendor - Green's Guns - swapped it for another that works like it should.  :-)

Enjoy... hope to be there for next month's meet!

The trigger would fail to reset after every 2nd or 3rd shot.  I stopped after about 35 rds, deciding it was defective.   It appeared to cycle and chamber the next round completely - just wouldn't fire.   A manual cycling (ejecting a live round and chambering the next) usually reset the trigger but not every time.   Out of the box, the replacement 22/45 ate 40 rounds of the same two ammo types with no problems whatsoever.

Back on topic, how was dinner and how was the group received at the restaurant?  ;)

There were 7 of us at dinner.  We had zero questions or complaints.  I didn't really even see any wierd looks in our directions.

One of out servers is a regular at the Students for Concealed Carry on Campus meetings.

He says to me something along the lines of: I see you are carrying

I replied: We all are

He looks down at the people in front of him and says: we don't see that very often in here.

We then talked for a little bit and he went back to work.

Both before and after dinner, I got more comments about my pipe than I did my pistol.

But then again, you can't smell a Glock from 20 feet away.

well, that and a gun is invisible to sheeple, but they villanize, tax, and attack poor smokers more than anyone else.

I must say, I enjoy being around a good pipe or good cigar, nothing like the smell of good real tobacco. I grew up in Wilson area, so was used tot he smell of hundred plus year old warehouses that still bleed tobacco smell, and tobacco barns everywhere.

I thought it was supposed to be every 2nd Saturday, which would make it on the 12th this month.

I'd suggest that, since a goodly percentage of people that come to the dinners are also State fans, students, alumni, that we be flexible on our scheduling.  Maybe we could, during football season, meet on a different night, or even on Sunday afternoon.

I work at the games, more specifically, for the NCSU marching band.

From everything I have been seeing, this game is supposed to be cake.  Only NCSU can screw up cake though.

What are peoples thoughs on changing the day of the week that we have our dinners?  Students for concealed carry on campus have their meetings every other tuesday.  Would a thursday evening work for people?

Weekday nights would actually work really well for me. Saturdays are usually booked, and the Saturday when you'd been doing them is match night for me.

OK, I've got a question about your OC meetings at CiCi's in Cary...

Doesn't Cary have an OC ban on city owned property, sidewalks, roads, etc.? How do you  get around that--CC in your car, then from the car to the front door, then OC once you're inside? How aggressive are the Cary LEO's with enforcing their OC ban on city property like sidewalks and streets?

Or do you jut OC from your car to the restaurant, and hope you don't get hassled?

Just Curious...

Cary has such a ban, but it only applies to city property - this is private property.

Second, and most importantly, the State supreme court established de-facto preemption law in State v Kerner, stating that a local law cannot go beyond the state consitution, which only allows restrictions on concealed weapons.

I've never heard of anyone getting into trouble with this, but even if by some odd occurring it did(it can't at CiCi's, mind you), it wouldn't stick in court because of that ruling. It's just a feel-good law on the books with no legal "teeth".

I'm a resident of Cary, and have had rather polite conversations with Lt. Joe Clifton, Cary PD, about the Cary Firearms Ordinances.  He's their resident expert on such matters.

Cary City Ordinance prohibits the display of firearms on public property, including public streets, sidewalks, and parks.  This is within the permitted limits set out in the Statewide CCH preemption clause in GS 14‑415.23.  Note that GS 14-409.40 also relates to statewide preemption of firearms laws, but does not directly address concealed carry permits.

Lt Clifton, in a phone conversation, made it clear that a public sidewalk or roadway was defined as one that was maintained by public funds.  So, parking lots are not considered 'public', and neither are the sidewalks in strip malls.

In practical terms, you're fine with open carrying just about anywhere in Cary, as long as you're not not walking to get from one place to another.  Since most of us drive everywhere, it's no big deal.  The biggest headache is when you're, for example, at Crossroads Mall, and decide you want to cross the street to go to McDonald's.  Can't walk across without concealing (assuming you have a CCH, that is).

Caveat:  Next paragraph is my own supposition.  IANAL, etc.

Now.... careful reading of GS 14-409.40 (General Statewide Firearms Preemption),  GS 14‑415.23 (Statewide CCH-specific preemption), and Cary City Ordinance 22-51... Seems to me that the only thing Cary (or any other local government) can do with regards to prohibiting concealed carry is to post public areas.  The State law on CCH preempts everything BUT the posting of signs (which, as we all know, carry the weight of law behind them).  The Cary ordinance says that concealed carry in parks is prohibited, but goes on to say that posting of signs is required.  So... if, for example, I were to take a walk in a Cary Greenway, I figure I could conceal carry just fine, as long as it wasn't conspicuously posted prohibiting it.  I haven't had a chance to ask Lt. Clifton about my layman's understanding of the relavent laws, but I plan to.

Enjoy. Great cause. I have a work function at a "fancy" restaurant tonight (can't carry) and Cici's isn't bad but... maybe I'll catch the next one  :)

So how did it go tonight?

I was supposed to be there at 7:40 or so.  I was the usher for a concert, which naturally ran late and I wasn't able to leave.

It went rather well.

Two of us were approached by people with the standard "Why are you carrying guns" question.  The responses in both cases were basically that we meet up once a month, and do so to exercise our RKBA.  Both people thought that was very cool.

A third person approached us, asking if what we were doing was legal.  Turns out, he has a CCH permit, and was carrying a really nice looking 1911 IWB.  He sat down and ate dinner with us, and thought that what we were doing was extremely cool.  We pointed him to OCDO; maybe we'll see him again.

I drive back in from Columbia and decide to eat at my old CHS pizza place only to see a bunch of gun toting crazies finishing their meals.  Ha!  I'm not the only one in Cary to carry!

It was nice to meet you guys.  Andy I've looked around this site and found lots of good info.  I still don't think I'll "OC" until perhaps the next time you guys meet up but I definitely respect what you're doing.

BTW did you let me sit down with you just because I have an "NRA ACTIVE MEMBER" belt buckle?

If any of you guys in the area ever want to meet up and go shoot with me in Chatham county let me know.  I go every other weekend.  You can shoot anything you've got, pistols, clay pigeons, LOOOOONG rifle lane (300-400 yds).  Just bring targets and ammo.  Maybe someone can teach me how to hit something beyond 50 feet.

The land is near US1 south and Old US1 hwy, near New Hill.

I might go tomorrow afternoon if the weather holds.  Anyone I met last night is certainly welcome to go.  Let me know...

Regards,

Adam

I kind of feel the same but still deciding. I'd probably be MORE apt to open carry if I didn't have a CCH as I figure they are just looking for a reason to take it away or deny my renewal next time...but we'll see.

Unless you become a felon or anything in the "prohibited" category, they can't revoke or deny a renewal. IF you're not familiar with it, do some research on "shall-issue" permit law. NC is one of those states, so what you (legally) do cannot affect your CCP  status in any way.

Contrary to what some folks would have you believe open carry is no more a legal gray area than carrying a gun concealed with a CCP. You may get hassled(as me and JDriver found out) because some people are ignorant of the law, but when it comes down to it, the law regarding open carry legality is crystal clear.

A lot of people aren't aware of this, and that's why we do the dinners - it makes people think and ask questions about something that they ordinarily wouldn't.

Hey Adam.  Greg here from the other night.  I'm glad to see you found the forums.  It's definitely a good place to find information and ask questions that someone here probably already knows the answer to.  I'm going out of town today but I'd definitely be interested in heading down your way sometime in the near future.  Keep in touch if you're looking for company another time.  Take care, man.

Sounds like a good idea. After this week at work I need to sling some lead down range.

Count my wife and I in.

When and Where?  Personal Defense?  You said 'morning', so that rules out the Wake County Public Range (opens at 1p.m.).

Thanks!!

Just checked in this afternoon and saw I had some interested folks!  That's awesome.  I've taken a group of about 9 people out before but half were admitted noobs and the other half turned out to be noobs.  I'm referring to safe handling of course. It was kind of a zoo.

But I'm sure anyone who comes on this board would know how to look out for themselves without me having to pull the hectic range master duties!

So the five or so that have responded are more than welcome to join me.

The land is in chatham co., about a mile from the intersection of us1 south and old hwy us1, near new hill.  I think it's exit 85 off of US1 south...

There is a gas station right off the exit, if you're heading south and exit the freeway you will come 180 degrees and find a stop sign.  Turn right at the stop sign onto old hwy 1 and as soon as you go back under the bridge the gas station is on your right.   We could use that as a good place to meet and you could follow me from there.  If you're coming from downtown apex you could just take old us 1 all the way out. To get to the shooting area you don't need 4wd or anything but there are some bumpy spots on the way in.  Lowriders be forewarned.

I have a busy afternoon but if we met around 9am we could easily stay until we ran out of rounds or about 12pm.

The only rules are be safe and never come back to this site on your own or tell anyone else where the "free range" is!  I have to be present!  (I'm only addressing this because it was an issue in the past)

I don't want to post my phone number but email me this evening if you're in.

acook80@gmail.com and I can give you my number in case you have trouble finding the exit or something.

I normally just practice with my handguns but there is a LONG rifle lane around 300-400 yards, an open area for clay pigeons, and of course plenty of pines to pin some paper targets on for handguns.  Just bring your ammo and anything you want to shoot at and a means of pinning it up (push pins, cardboard boxes etc.)

I hope those who expressed interest can make it this will be fun!

Is this the gas station you're talking about? Google Maps

This exit matches your description (It's exit 84, no 85 - couldn't find an exit 85), and there seems to be a building that looks like a gas station from satellite view.

We haven't decided the location yet.  We are open to suggestions.

I believe we will not be at CiCi's for this dinner.

We are meeting at Cook Out on Western if the weather stays clear, and at McDonalds if there is rain.

The location was chosen by closeness to campus, ability to carry, and ability to seat a group of people.  This allows those who can't make the range day, are on campus without a mode of transportation, or those who just want to come to dinner to make it.

I'd like to come check you all out sometime, just to see what it is like.  I've seen these videos of OC picnics and BBQ's.  I like seeing responsible people not only practicing their rights, but making, I think, the places we live and visit safer by detering criminals.
