This is my first post here, but I thought I'd start off by inviting folks to come shoot with us. I'd like to invite folks here to come shoot Defensive Pistol with us at the Bigfork Gun Club this summer. We use IDPA rules and generally shoot from concealment. I used to run IDPA at the club from 2003-2006, so I may have shot with some here. I'd sure like to see you guys come out to the range and shoot with us! We generally have 10-15 shooters and we'd like to see many more. Bring your carry gun, three mags, holster/mag pouch, at least 150 rounds and your set! I do not run the matches anymore, but would be happy to answer any questions you may have. Here's a link to the website: http://www.bigforkgunclub.com/ Setup starts at 0800, safety briefing at 0930 (you must attend the safety meeting in order to shoot) and shooting generally starts at 1000. If you come and help setup and tear down, match fees are only $7.00. Otherwise it is $15.00. And here's a schedule of matches for 2009: March 14, April 11, May 9, June 13, July 11, August 8, September 12, October 10. I'd really like to shoot with my fellow locals (and non-locals as well of course Cheers, LeMat Last edited on Thu Mar 5th, 2009 09:39 pm by LeMat |

We'll be shooting from underneath the covered portion of the range at the clubhouse. There is a nice wood stove in there which should be going to keep us warm. I would definitely bring some warm clothes though. I also wanted to say that the first match is pretty low-key. We're trying to get the cobwebs out from over the winter. This isn't a USPSA crowd. Just a bunch of guys who like to shoot their carry guns. Last edited on Fri Mar 6th, 2009 01:55 am by LeMat |

I honestly can not make it tomorrow. As some know my income is very fixed right now, I can barely afford to go shoot my bow right now and that is for $5.00 range fees. I just got 1,000 .45 ACP brass for free and can't load them up yet. So my handgun shooting fun will just have to wait, until things get better. I just got released from TTD (temp total disbility) to PPD (perm partial disability) with a 6% imparment because of my shoulder, so now I can go and at least get a job if I can find one that fits within what they say I can do. |

Well, I wasn't able to make the match today (feel like a real horse's patoot after trying to get you guys to go My wife came down with a real bad cough and we didn't get much sleep. I wasn't about to leave her sitting at home miserable while I went and shot. I was thinking that some weekend in the next month or so, we could all get together and throw some rounds downrange. Be a good opportunity to get familiar with the rules and regs and just have fun. If you go to the website, they also shoot USPSA and will be having a Shriner's Benefit Steel Match on Mar 28th. 40s-and-wfan, too bad you're not shooting a 40 anymore. I've still got some factory ammo and nothing to use it in. Last edited on Sat Mar 14th, 2009 09:03 pm by LeMat |

LeMat, quick question on the IDPA subject: I carry my pistol in a Blackhawk Serpa Holster, is that allowed in IDPA? It's my primary carry holster and I don't necessarily wanna try to break in another one, or get used to another one!! |

It's my primary carry holster and I don't necessarily wanna try to break in another one, or get used to another one!! I'm sure the Serpa is just fine. IDPA basically frowns on "race" type holsters, which the Serpa definitely is not. You'd be just fine at our local matches. There was a big blowup a few years ago when the rules changed. IDPA used to have an "approved list", but then just changed it to a set of guidelines that a holster had to meet. One of the new guidelines was as long as it doesn't sit too far away from your body (i.e., you can see light between the holster and belt) it should be fine. This caused a big stink with the Uncle Mike's plastic holsters as they made a perfect, cheap alternative for some folks, but was all of a sudden "illegal" under IDPA rules. We're no longer IDPA "sanctioned", but we do still use the rulebook. There were times in which a shooter may have had illegal equipment under the rules, but I'd let them shoot anyway because he was a new shooter and I wasn't about to turn someone away just because his holster wasn't "legal". Even a seasoned shooter, but one that was new to IDPA, would be allowed to shoot, but would be told about the equipment rule. As far as I'm concerned, if it's a holster you use for carrying, it's fine (I've never seen anyone carrying with a Ghost, CR Speed, etc. holster and would pass out from laughing if I did). You can get a PDF rulebook from the IDPA site. Just click on "About IDPA" on the left hand side and you should see "Rule Book": http://www.idpa.com/ Last edited on Tue Mar 24th, 2009 04:16 am by LeMat |

Just a reminder that the next match is this Saturday, the 11th. Supposed to be over by noon, so it'll be short and sweet. There's a Hunter Ed class scheduled. Not sure what the MD has in mind for this one. I should be able to make this one, so I hope to see your smiling faces. I'll be the big, fat guy. |

Next one's coming up May 9th. I've got the stages laid out and it will be 60 rounds minimum (that means if you make all your shots perfect, you'll only need 60 rounds. Or if you're like me, you may want to bring about 80. There'll be 5 stages, each one consisting of app. 12 rounds each. All are scenario driven and two are taken from actual defensive shootings in Israel. |

Just wanted to add that we're not real hung up on wearing a cover garment. If you OC, you're more than welcome to shoot how you carry. A couple of us will be shooting revolvers this next match, so the stages are revolver friendly (pretty much just one reload, but I'd bring a couple of speedloaders if you've got them). If anyone's got any questions, please ask. |

We try to start setting up around 0800. Registration is about 0900, safety meeting at 0930 and we try to start shooting at 1000. We're trying to get out of there sooner than we have in the past years (we were done by noon at the last one). I used to run 8 stages and we'd generally get out of there around 1500. When it starts getting hot, those days get long. We usually have around 10-15 people and run maybe 2 squads if there are 15 or more. We have a good core group of about 6 guys that always show up and the others are generally new to the game. I think the reason as to why we have so many one-time shooters is that they get discouraged that they didn't do better, but they may not realize that we were all new shooters at some point. If you go into it with the proper mindset, it's some of the best fun you can have standing up. Everyone is real friendly and down to Earth. When we're not shooting (or taping and picking up brass), we're shootin' the breeze and talkin' about guns. Sure would like to see you there! |

Good idea to bring equipment anyway. If you go to the website, Nat's email is under the Bigfork Defensive Pistol link. I generally don't shoot the Jul and Aug matches as they're just too friggin' hot. I believe the August match for USPSA is an Area Slot match. I don't think they'll be shooting 3-gun at this one, but don't quote me on that one. I don't shoot USPSA anymore. |

Happy birfday Well, it was a good shoot - we had 12 shooters, up from July's 7, but down from June's 14. We had steel, barriers, barrels, movement, reloads...and a whole lot of fun! The next match scheduled for September 12th. $7 if you help set up (8 am), $15 if ya don't, (be ready to participate in the 9:15 safety briefing either which way) then shoot... See ya there... |

Sorry for the stupid question. I just shot the Bigfork USPSA match on Sunday and have shot up there before but only for USPSA. How is Defensive Pistol different? If I shoot production with my XD9, will I need any other equipment to shoot defensive pistol? Is it scored/timed similar to USPSA? Thanks |

Laramie wrote: Sorry for the stupid question. I just shot the Bigfork USPSA match on Sunday and have shot up there before but only for USPSA. They essentially use the IDPA rulebook. BDP (Bigfork Defensive Pistol) is geared more towards, well, defensive pistol. Holsters should be ones that you would use to wear your sidearm in concealment or OC. Race holsters are not allowed. Mag pouches are worn at about 9:00 or a little behind the hip, not in front like USPSA. Only two magazines are allowed on the belt. Max round count for a single string is 18. Sometimes, a stage may have 2-3 strings. There are no "hoser" stages in IDPA. Since you shoot production, you should be just fine with the equipment you have. USPSA Production was USPSA's answer to those who wanted to shoot their carry guns and not have to compete against the race guns. IDPA is scored very differently. Depending where your hits are, you are awarded "points down" for hits outside of the center ring (1, 2, and 3). Your total number of points down on a target are then divided in half and that number is then seconds added to your raw time for that stage. So, if you shoot the stage in 10 seconds and receive 10 points down, you will have 5 seconds added to your raw score of 10, giving you a score of 15 for that stage. IDAP also has...... 1. Procedurals which will add 3 seconds to your score (shooting targets out of order, not utilizing cover correctly, etc.). 2. Hit On A Non-Threat Target which will add 5 seconds to your score. 3. Failure to Neutralize which you get for not getting at least one shot within the down-0 or down-1 zones of a threat target. For this you will receive 5 seconds added to your score. 4. Failure To Do Right is a 20-second penalty given for any illegal action taken specifically to gain a competitive advantage. A shooter who deliberately fires extra rounds at a target so that he must reload at a more opportune time (dumping rounds) is a classic example of this penalty. Our group is pretty low key and a bit different than the USPSA crowd. You generally won't see any USPSA shooters (with a couple of exceptions) at the BDP matches. |

Thanks a bunch for the explaination. That helps clear it up a bit. I'm hoping to get up there and shoot the next one. I love shooting USPSA, but my purpose in competing is to get better with gun based on carrying concealed. Thanks again... LeMat wrote: Laramie wrote:Sorry for the stupid question.
