Currently, this is in the events thread for April 12th.

As I mentioned elsewhere, I plan on putting in a lot of effort to inform as many media outlets as possible about this event.  This park has an explicit, illegal "no weapons" statement on the park rules sign and Auburn Hills has a few ordinances which violate state preemption on gun regulation.  Despite my efforts since last year with city officials, the ordinances are still in place so this event would be important for "highlighting awareness of illegal ordinances and signage".

For whatever media that show up, it is my opinion that a healthy turnout of OC folks would be beneficial given that I will attempt my very best to maximize the publicity we receive.  I think that the date for now should be "TBD upon getting X confirmed attendees open-carrying".  "X" being the "magic" number to be considered a "healthy turnout".

What do you think X should be?  I think 8.  What do you think?

Once we have X confirmed OC'ers, we could set the date that is convenient for them, and I will alert as many media outlets as possible.

If we're not getting X anytime soon, then we can still do the event, set a hard date, but I won't get crazy with trying to turn out as much media as possible.

I would hope for such a turnout.  The Warren event had NINETEEN (19) OC'ers confirm attendance and four "possibles".

Thanks, dougwg and HPC9.  You put us at 6 confirmed so far.

Yes but the newspaper had a piece a few days before and many people came because of that.  You can try do do the same.  If you can get a press release in before the event that would help greatly.

Thanks for that input, Brian.  Do you have a good example of a press release that you can PM or email to me?  I can modify to suit and start getting it out there.

On the matter of timing of alerting the media, is there an optimum?  I don't want to do it "too late", obviously, but is there also a "too soon"?  Or, is it best to send press releases at the earliest opportunity, even if it is two or three weeks from an event?

Hope this helps:
I would say about 10 days before the event.  Many papers and TV stations have community calanders on their sites and allow you to post stuff on them.  I would contact the news directors of both print and TV, as well as posting in the calanders.

I contacted the media via emails, but a phone call works wonders.

Below are two releases I used for two differant events.  Modify as you deem necessary.  I would be happy to review your release if you like.  I may be able to attend with the wife and kid.

A few confirmations came in recently and quickly.  I feel confident the trend will put us into "healthy turnout" territory, so please keep the date at April 12th to minimize disruption.

Thanks for your quick response.

Venator reminded me of two concerns about the April 12th date.  It is Easter Sunday, and many folks may not be able to make it due to travel or other scheduled activities.  Also, the weather during April can still turn cold and ugly unpredictably, which is a concern for outside events.

I agree that these concerns are significant, so I'm going to change the date.  In reviewing the other MOC events, and in keeping with the desire to keep events spaced apart by about three weeks and off of major holiday weekends if possible, the next good date is Sunday, July 12th.

This event will be rescheduled to July 12th.  I don't think there are significant concerns to that weekend, but please let me know if I'm missing something.

Stand by for a date change on this event.

The covered pavilion at the park, which I plan on renting for us, is booked out to the first Sunday in August.  The Sundays in August the pavilion is currently available are the 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th.  We need guaranteed space to set-up, cook, eat, etc., so I'll pick one of those dates, starting with the earliest available when I get to the Rec dept offices.

I need to know from the confirmed and possible folks, what dates above are out of the question for you if any.  I'll give a couple of days to see your responses, and then go from there.  The rental is $50, so please definitely say something about these dates, if you have something to say, because I would hate to rent it and a bunch of people who've signed up to attend can't show on the new date.

Thanks!

Good to hear from you, Jonny.

PM SpringerXDacp that you are "confirmed" or "possible" (whichever you feel applies) to attend this event.  If you think you'll bring family or friends, add a  "+1", "+2", or whatever the number is that plan on coming with you.

I've secured the pavilion reservation for Sunday, August 9th, so that is the date of this event.  SpringerXDacp has been requested to update the event thread with that date.  The good news is that I didn't have to pay the $50 pavilion rental like I thought I had too.

Coincidentally, this is Venator's birthday and he's planning on being there.  Along with the refreshments I signed up to bring, I'm bringing a birthday cake, too, if I get confirmation he has no change in plan the day before or day of.  Come on out, whether your OC'ing or not, and let's sing Happy Birthday to him if he's there! :)

Guys its lookin like I'm having another tight week financially. Not sure that I'm going to be able to bring something to pass. Friggin unemployment just doesn't cut it anymore. The 40 minute drive each way is gonna be painful enough on the checkbook.

Don't suppose anybody is coming from the Flint area that I could hitch a ride with? I'd pitch in some gas money AND I'd be able to bring a dish to pass...

Looks like a good day for riding. :celebrate

I'm gonna try and stop on the way and find some sort of salad type of thing that can fit in my back pack.

By the way, good to see that there is a car pool going from the Flint area.

We really need to use car pooling more often. :uhoh:

Take it to the top, used when an article has no responses for a while and ends up on page 4 as in the case, by responding with TTT or bump it brings this back to the top of the first page.

Thanks, everyone who braved the hot, humid weather.  There were some faces I know and some new folks I got the pleasure to meet.

The big surprise of the picnic (at least for me) was Jim Simmons being there and hanging out for a good while!

It really was a surprise to see Jim Simmons there. I was nearly shocked to find out that he had come out. After all the OC bad mouthing he's done, he made THAT far of a drive to come visit with us, and answer legal questions. A big thanks to him.

I did indeed ride my mountain bike each way. I OC'd for part of the ride there, and none of the ride back. There were 2 reasons for CCing on parts of the ride. First, that in some areas I'll chose not to name, I don't know that I trust the police, and additionally, I was riding on the sidewalk, and there are often local ordinances against that. I'm really only comfortable OCing while riding when I KNOW I'm obeying all traffic laws. The other part of it is that I bolted my mag pouch down so it won't move, and it digs into my waist while riding with the particular back pack I brought today. The solution I have for that is that I'm going to mount a holster to that back pack.

Sorry we missed the picnic.  We hope everything went good.  We were up until 6am with our pregnant cat.  She delivered 8 kittens.  We went to bed & didn't get up until early afternoon.  In 8 weeks if anyone would like a kitten, please let us know!
