well i was there seating at the table with my 3 children and wife when behind me a butler police office asked me to step out side. so we went to the corner of the restaurant and i gave him my permit and drivers license. he ran my drivers license and then asked if he could have my weapon to see if it was stolen . and he ran my guns serial number and of course everything was good. the officer gave my weapon back to my and asked me why i open carry. i told him i prefer it that way and it also promotes that pa is a open carry state. he then asked me if i carry the weapon loaded in the car and i said yes. he said his chief said that was illegal i told him no that as long as i have a LTCF permit. it is legal and i told him i have proof. and i did i had a flier from this sight, i asked the officer if he would want one and he said yes i do. this office was great and very professional and polite. we shook hands and parted. |

Would I go outside to talk to the cop? Maybe...if I didn't want to make a scene. Would I have shown him my permit in order to speed things along so I can go back to dinner quickly? Perhaps. Would I give him my gun so he can check to see if it was stolen? ABSOLUTELY NOT. First of all he has no reasonable suspicion that it would be stolen and secondly, there is no gun registration in the commonwealth and as such how could he POSSIBLY, legally and non-hypocritically check to see if it was stolen lest someone reported it stolen. This reminds me of the situation in the eastern part of PA with a Old Country buffet when they would give back a gun because it wasn't in the illegally registry. I can appreciate you wanting to get back to your family and finish your meal and that this officer was getting some bogus information but if I didn't before I definitely would have drawn the line at giving him my weapon. |

When I OC, I do not carry any ID on me... no DL, no CHL, nothing. (Unless I'm in a vehicle, of course.) I would also never voluntarily hand over my gun. If the LEO asks for my gun, I will vocally object. If he orders me to hand over my gun, I will tell him to remove the gun from the holster himself. Don't get me wrong... it's great you OC. But don't be a doormat. |

well i was there seating at the table with my 3 children and wife when behind me a butler police office asked me to step out side. mistake #1: don't go anywhere with a LEO unless you're being detained or arrested. so we went to the corner of the restaurant and i gave him my permit and drivers license. mistake #2: you had no reason to give him anything, especially where no one could see. he ran my drivers license and then asked if he could have my weapon to see if it was stolen . and he ran my guns serial number and of course everything was good. mistake #3: never give a LEO your weapon. if they want it, they can take it themselves.
the officer was not great, nor was he professional or polite. don't let a smile and a handshake fool you, he was looking for a way to arrest you, or at least confiscate your gun. file a report immediately, and don't ever talk to the police again. |

look i know i don't have to give the police anything i could have been a prick and not give him my id permit or gun. but whats that going to do. i wanted to get back to my family. i have a very clean record and i an not afraid of any leo my record has to be clean to be a corrections officer. but the office asked and i gave. the whole thing took about 5 minutes. he was polite and apoligized to me for the inconverouse but he said he had to sence it was called in. every one on this sight will say to me i was wrong for what i did but in my eyes at that point of time i handled it in the right way for me. and it only took 5 minutes of my time. and the leo took one of are fliers and said he my even join are sight. |

JAH, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him think. Spencer if he took the gun off you himself thats a direct violation of a few of your civil rights. At the least you need to send a letter about the misconduct of the officer to his station. There is NO excuse at all for what he did, friendly attitude or not. Being friendly cost him nothing as he stripped you of those rights. Please do send a letter or file a complaint, because treating you like that was uncalled for and very unprofessional. Nothing wrong with complying up to a point. When they attempted to walk all over my rights or violated the law I would politely refuse any further interaction. "Officer am I being detained? Arrested? Thank you I will finish my meal now." And walk away. |

spencer, just ignore Aran. He has nothing productive to add to anything here....EVER. As far as your encounter: There are some who would have handled it differently and I think that's all anyone is pointing out to you. When you post a story whether you did it your way or just the way someone responding here would have done it, someone is bound to reply and say they would have done things differently. This is how we learn. We read the replies and sometimes we walk away with information we didn't have beforehand: ie what we could have done differently, what we still feel we did right, what we will do differently next time. Everyone has different comfort levels. Some of us are more apt to stand up to an officer whether it makes a scene or not and our spouses and families know it. Some of us are a more passive type of person and our spouses and families have come to expect that about us. The same can not be said about others on the internet. You handled it the way you felt was appropriate and at a level that was comfortable for you and your family at the time and place and that is what matters. Kudos to you for having a flyer and passing one on to the officer. As for me, I would have handled it differently (much to my husband's dismay) but I suspect we (you and I) have different personalities. Nothing wrong with that. Like I said, at the end of the day you helped educate someone. Had you met him with resistance he may not have been open to that at all so at the end of the day you helped the cause. CARRY ON! JONES FOR JANITOR!! Last edited on Sun Apr 12th, 2009 01:13 pm by shefearsnothing |

shefearsnothing wrote: spencer, just ignore Aran. He has nothing productive to add to anything here....EVER. +1 There often is more than one "right way" to handle a situation. IMO - the OP did what worked for him at that time. Other's opinions are good as they may redirect future responses to similar incidents. I find it funny(as in ha-ha) that this occurred in an Old Country Buffet considering some of the past events at OCB. Answering the LEO's unasked question as to what would you expect me to do with a MWAG call - observe, seeing nothing illegal, leave. There is no need to shake down the citizen and violate his rights in the process. Yata hey |

Aran wrote: Disliking one specific woman does not equal misogyny, you moron. Doubt very seriously that you will take this message in the spirit in which it is offered. Showing dislike publicly rather than privately for any member repeatedly, violates the trust that we place in each other and as such is not a little offensive to most. Regular use of insults and less than good choice of words leaves much to be desired in the image that OCDO wishes to foster. I have read numerous postings/responses from you that were good and on thread. IMO - it is shame that they are not all so. We are known here by what we say and how we say it. We all contribute not only to the public persona of OCDO but our own image as well. It is your choice. Yata hey |

Spencer, I think you did great. I agree with you. You know you didnt have to, but since when is doing what YOU feel is correct being a door mat. And to everyone bashing him. Welcome to America where you have a right to be nice, or to be a prick. Some just make better choices than others. And that choice is for each individual to make. How are you any better than the anti's if you're going to force your ideas down everyones throats? You're not ~SFC Adams |

It's not letting them force THEIR ideas down YOUR throat. A lot of people don't think you should OWN a gun, nevermind carry one, nevermind openly. Are you going to drop your guns off at the police station so that you can be the "better man"? |

Deanimator, what I'm referring to is the chastisement that Spencer is getting. You all doing what you think is right is great! But whats right for one person may not be right for the next. I think it's everyones responsibility to decide for themselves. |
