The July dinner will be held at Fudruckers on July 14th at 7 pm! There's been an interesting thread about this location so lets see if we can show them the buying power of OC'ers!

Welcome to OCDO - hope you enjoy and profit.

Of course you and your family are more than welcome. We'll start you off as "possibles." Let us know if you'd like to confirm - helps with the planning.

You will find that we are a laid back & diverse group - great cross section of the local population - all ages, couples, families, students etc. Some don't even OC.....yet.

Feel free to ask questions. Normally have smaller scale OC breakfasts each Sat. A.M. too - look for posting on Thurs. or Fri. prior.

Sounds good. Finally made my first VCDL meeting last week in Richmond. Got me a little more motivated. I have a CHP but have been doing more OC lately. To hot for extra cloths lol.

Yes, all are welcome and we especially love OC'ing with families because this makes a BIG statement to the community that we're wholesome American's and we're not knuckle dragging mercenaries. My wife and daughter will also be there. We even have families that bring newborns only two weeks old.

Being summer it is usualy hit or miss with the kids as they always seem to stay with friends on and off.

Fuddruckers in the person of the general manager, Mr. Riggins, responded in outstanding fashion to contacts from OCDO & VCDL members and removed the "No Guns" sign immediately.

      Took the wife and kids to Fudd's Saturday night to celebrate our 20th anniversary of our blind date and to thank Mr. Riggins for his support! Had a great meal, good convo with Mr. Riggins, put in a plug for ProShooter, they totally fixed us up with dessert, and I told them we'd be back soon!!!

      Mr. Riggins said he had already talked to someone earlier that day about holding our OC monthly dinner there, must have been you Grape Shot!!!

      Put me down for 2 definite and 2 possible, maybe more, we'll see.

FYI - not wanted to redirect the thread - For those that had problems with OCDO forum - it was a routing problem with the host server which did not effect everybody -its fixed now.

I'd love to come but that OCDO is ~90 minutes away... one way. Would definitely make for a late night. It's up to the Mrs. When it comes to domestic things (like summer school for children), she's the boss.

I've also been plugging you ProShooter. A few folks that I work with have been getting interested in picking up permits for other than VA. Been making photo copies of the card you gave me a while back for them.

I am beginning to recant from my post about opting for Five Guys or Carytown Burgers & Fries instead of Fuddruckers and going ahead and dealing with the extra bit of driving/time it would take for me to get to Fuddruckers whenever I'm in the mood for going out for a burger.

Terrific response this early in the planning - lets keep it up!

This exemplifies what these OC dinners represent - normal, everyday people, from diverse walks of life, getting together for fellowship and enjoying a good meal. We share experiences, get up to speed on what is happening, explain laws and rules as we understand them and have FUN.

Welcome to all of those new to our dinners - you are the life blood of our group - we are the better because of you!

OC creates educational opportunities. The very act of OCing brings with it a responsibility to the whole community. I'm proud to be associated with such fine people.

PS - There is no pressure to "do as I do." Even if you do not normally OC, come on out and enjoy a friendly meal - remember though, if you do carry you must OC where alcohol is served.

Yes, don't think that you must OC to be a part of these dinners. It's certaiinly encouraged, but not required. But remember, you cannot conceal where they serve alcohol.

I just registered. My first post. Get off your Damned asses and spend a dollar to exercise your rights! I'm way passed pissed off at all the gun owning persons out there sitting on the sidelines while a handfull of people fight for what is a constitutionally guaranteed right! Did any of you buy your 1st ammendment license to free speech!??? If not then, shut the F...UP!!!No license to prevent unlawfull searches??? Don't want to hear from you either!! Hey I have a right to own and carry a firearm and while not an "in your face" kinda guy I firmly believe our rights are alot like muscles and if you don't use them, you are sure to lose them. Spend $25 bucks and join the NRA!!! Guys... and Gals...Please, Do not be apathetic on this one! Hell, OPEN Carry and be proud! If we really had any orginazation we would have lead a movement to open carry the whole damn state on the 4rth. But no, we are a very lethargic group of pukes who will let our rights slip away. You sicken me. As do I myself. It's too late.

Count me in with # 2 daughter also in attendance. First-born child (known to several on here as "Midget with Glock" or recently, "Bri" as she calls herself in her first post) is in Northern Virginia working as a "personal assistant" for an old high school friend of mine.

Since its nearly a 2 hour trip up there, We'll make a day of it and do some sightseeing during the day. Too bad I can't carry while visiting the battlefields in the area :banghead:

We'll just take in the sights in the dowtown area. Has anyone OC'd at the Poe Museum?

Well, I'm probably a no. Again. Tough to get out to dinner when my monthly salary right now doesn't even equal my mortgage...

If it were closer to home, I would probably drop by with my son just to say hey and grab a desert or something (and probably be OCing on the bike :cool:

). And the way my work schedule is, I never know week to week what hours on what days I'm working.

Appreciate you all keeping me on my toes re numbers etc.

I had a simple addition error also so the number is even higher!

Please excuse the apparent lack of formatting from time to time - especially on older listings/postings that change alignment. It is not me. This forum/host is not set up for double column entries and such are not retained/saved from day to day. You would not believe the editing struggle to just make them legible.

Keep the confirmations coming - this may well be the biggest OC dinner in Virginia ever. Our resident photographer may need to bring a wide angle lens.

Let me know if "possibles" can be moved to "confirmed." It helps in the planning.

If you can arrive about 15-20 minutes early, we will have voluntary name tags available and plan to take a group picture before we go inside.

We may do the same picture afterward but some people may have to leave earlier than others & the light will be better earlier.

All who are participating in the Federal Witness Protection Program are requested to stay in the front row, and include both your real name and alias on the name tag. I'm just going to mail in a copy of my picture from the Post Office wall - it captures my "good side" so well. :lol:

Trying to be serious for a moment - group pictures do a lot for publicizing the OC movement. If nothing else, we can send them to the writers of editorials and Letters To the Editor showing that a crowd of OCers got together and no blood flowed in the streets - only good times and fellowship (can't spell 'comradery' today).

Looking forward to seeing the "regulars" and the new faces.

Might be a few but in general Richmond is getting used to us. It does generate a lot of good conversation (education) sometimes though.

I admit to having trouble wrapping myself around the concept of OCing in public but being camera shy - but I would honor any friend's (you all fit) request to not take their picture.

If some one doesn't want to be in the group photo shoot, don't get in the set up - just step aside, its that simple - no big deal.

Inside where cameras are subject to click at any moment (at picnics video cams record all) is perhaps a different matter. So if you don't want to have your picture taken there, I think it is incumbant on the individual to speak up early in the event. Heck, I'll even get you a table out of camera range and designated as a "no shoot zone." "Nuff said?

Me? I'm hardly a covert agent/emissary of OC and celebrate any positive publicity we get. From time to time we have managed to coordinate with the media to further our cause - witness the Night Line coverage of the Newport News VCDL picnic. Let the bright light of day shine on the RKBA.

Just my $20.00 worth.

WOAH! I sure am glad I just looked at these latest posts! For some odd reason, I thought the Fudd Dinner was THIS COMING Tuesday... the 7th. I don't know why I thought that, but it was firmly embedded in my skull for some odd reason.

Been a VCDL member for about a year now and finally was able to attend the last meeting at the Richmond Library. I would say it got me more motivated. As well there are a few members at church that were interested. I cant afford to do too much but talk is free so I put in my two cents when I can.

Your two cents is more valuable than a bazillion dollars of advertising - word of mouth from somebody known by the listener carry weight much greater than anything else.

If you want to step up your efforts contact OCDO member Ed and ask him for his free open carry cards and get some VCDL applications. Hand them out to folks you talk to. Some folks go so far as to buy GSL buttons (or get a handful of stickers) to give, along with the cards and applications, to those who show interest.

Looking forward to meeting you and your posse at the dinner.

Go a little further down to Ashland there is a Bass Pro, or even better yet Green top is off of route 1 before you get to Bass pro on the left if you are traveling north on 1. :lol:

There may be some stragglers as well on my part. Working as a construction estimator I talk to a lot of people in a day, with the mention of this dinner. I have told them to let me know but you know how that works some times.

No concerns to this regard at all.

Fuddruckers has a huge room available for parties and such. Ken Cucinelli used it for his post Heller Victory Party where there were considerably more people in attendance.

In addition, the General Manager of this location is watching this thread and hasn't screamed uncle yet. Actually, I think he is rubbing his hands together with glee.

Don't know what kind of hanging out you're seeking - there is a Books-A-Million just east of Fuddruckers in Westland Shopping Center - same side of the street, about a block away. Coffee bar and free magazine reading.

I am very happy to see the number of attendees increasing daily, but not for profit. I am also wondering if all the possibles show up how in the world I am going to fit all of us into that room . We have had parties as big as 75 in there, but we still have another week until the meeting and I guess that I am going to have to move some chairs and tables into the backroom. Glad we aren't doing this on a Friday or Saturday. :lol:

While this time could be the exception, only some of the possibles normally make it and a few of the confirmed will have last minute problems. Right now I would guesstimate that we are looking at 55-60. Will continue to monitor the numbers though.

Still the ability to add seating in that area is good - just in case.

I'm sure that some will wander out on the patio area too.

According to our C'ville-area former LEO correspondent, anybody even suspected of open carrying would be locked up on sight.

My bet is SuperDad and Tweaker are just wannabe's who are coming to Richmond where they know it is safe to OC, and will then go back to C'ville and brag about OCing with "dozens of other people" just to establish some phoney street cred.

Srsly - looking forward to meeting you two next week. There are a few of us who have been aggitating for OC in the C'ville area with said former LEO but with no sucess so far. Maybe after experincing the liberating feeling in Richmond SuperDad and Tweaker will go back to C'ville and spread the joy. (Yes, I will be glad to come out to C'ville to attend their OC event - even if no meal is involved - just to show that even Yankees have some manners.)

Also checked the C'ville thread and found out SuperDad & Tweaker met up on 6/30 for ribs & such in C'ville. I think the Richmond dinners started with about as many for the first one, too. HLH will have to tell the story (again *groan*?) to set the record straight.

So - apologies to SuperDad & Tweaker, who really do have legitimate street cred for OC dining in C'ville without getting arrested. Seems like I'll have to buy them a drink to make up for my flippancy - how much is iced tea anyhow?

Skidmark is a funny man!! We did a dinner out here in C'ville two weeks ago. Two of us showed up but we got to start somewhere. Had 7 people interested but most couldn't fit it into their schedule, and it was also the day the site went down so people couldn't remember where/when it was happening.

I actually live down in Hampton Roads but work in C'ville , that's why you will see my name pop up on both threads.

At last check, VCDL was getting a new supply printed up. Maybe someone will have some available at the dinner. Also the VCDL table at the gunshow this week-end will likely have some.

I'm out of the cards too.

I intend to get one of the membership packages (multiple applications, GSL buttons & info cards) when they are restocked also.

Stopped by Fuddruckers today and talked to the manager on duty - RichmondFuddrucker (Tom) was off.

She said the room could accommodate 80 and that we could use the adjoining patio as well - its separated only by a glass wall and multiple doors.

It seems we're still good even if all of the possible replies show up.

Would be great if our VCDL pres. could give a brief plug for VCDL membership if he can make it.

Some of us need to help Charlotesville get their OC dinner off the ground. The first 1-2 years for the RIC OC dinner were mostly lightly attended with an average of 4-10 for dinner. The past year or so we seem to have hit critical mass with an average attendance at 30+. I got interested in starting this dinner because I wasn't comfortable OCing, and found that others weren't either. The dinner is a great way to "come out of the closet" and be surrounded by those who are experienced OCers. We eventually got a core group of about 8 that always showed for the dinners. "If you build it they will come". For you newbies: Don't touch your gun, don't look at your gun, forget it's there, act like it's not there. If you're comfortable being "normal" those around you will be comfortable with you being "normal".

Been there done that. I started OCing before I even new about VCDL, now that I have done it for a while it does become more natural. I think the only thing I think every once in a while is am I going to be told to leave. If I am I am that would just be one place short of my business.

I think also one issue of coming out of the closet and I have heard this on a few occasions is I am not ready, or I don't want any one else uncomfortable. Usually I reply with we do not OC to make any one uncomfortable or the hope we will have to use our weapon in a self defence situation all though we are prepared if the circumstance should arrive. Than I go on to explain that in a lot of cases if a would be robber or thug noticed a OC than they would be less likely to carry out their plans. Knowing they would embarking on more than just what they would consider a simple robbery or assault. Most of the time I get, I didn't look at it that way.

Even though Va is a retreat first state that OC could be the difference between life and death to ones self or family.

I know in my CHP safety class they told us if there is any way to get out of harms way without using deadly force that was the must option for Va.

I am deeply saddened to say we cannot make it. I just found out some of my Left Coast relatives are coning to town and will only be here for a few days, so we will be busy spending time with them...

The large, special room will accommodate 75-80 people, the adjoining patio another 20 and that is without any spill over into the main dinning area.

Historically, each and every "confirmed" has not able to make it and about 40-60% of "possibles" have attended.

Based on the above, I anticipate 79-80 friends and family - old friends are like family and new ones are golden.

All seems to be going well - beyond expectation but nevertheless well.

I've neem 4 times and counted seats and looked pver the patio. Even if there is an excess, the main dining area has plenty of room.

2. VCDL President to speak at an OpenCarry.Org dinner Richmond Tuesday

I will give a brief address to gun owners at a dinner organized by

some members of VCDL and OpenCarry.org this Tuesday, July 14, at 7 PM

at a Richmond Fuddruckers restaurant.

The reason this dinner is being held is to thank the restaurant

manager for being open minded and removing a "No guns" sign that he

had put up after a robbery recently.

As soon the sign was seen by VCDL member Don Litten, he spread the

word and gun owners jumped into action. After discussing the issue

with the manager and pointing out that the "No guns" sign would NOT

stop criminals, but embolden them, the manager agreed that the sign

was worthless and the sign was removed.

Here is the message that the manager posted on the OpenCarry.org web

site:

"Hey folks! My name is Thomas Riggins, General Manager of Fuddruckers

in Richmond. I have spoken to several of you in the last few days

about the "No Gun" sign that was on our front door. I spoke to Mr.

Reynolds, President of Precision Shooters, LLC., and he spoke in depth

about the Open Carry Laws for the state of Virginia. We are sorry for

any problems that may have happened as a result of this and welcome

you all to come in for a great meal, whether you are armed or unarmed.

We were glad to see Mr. Litten come back after the sign came down

since he was the person who initially brought the matter to our

attention. We would be more than happy to host your upcoming OC

Can you imagine a restaurant FULL of OCers? More interesting would be if a BG came back for "seconds" with a place full of OCers... Visualize a dozen OCers in line to order food, another 50 or 70 already seated and eating their dinner and in walks a BG with a .25 cal Lorcin.

Just as a refresher for those of us who don't quite remember (and don't entirely feel like slogging through 10 pages of posts) what exactly is the plan of action for Tuesday? I know there had been some chatter of meeting before the appointed golden hour to take a group picture, is that still on? If so what is the time on that?

Last I saw was that the plan was to arrive 15-20 minutes early to be able to allow for the picture to be taken a few minutes before dinner at 7:00.

We just had our Raleigh OC dinner this weekend, and had 15 people there. I want to see how a big meet goes, and maybe talk to a few organizers.

I know I don't need to say this, but I'm going to say it anyway because we have such a large crowd and a lot of new attendees:

Remember, we are at this dinner for the community's sake far more than ours. Every time we do one of these OC dinners it's about showing society that an armed group is polite, is self controlled, and can be trusted with their safety. This is also the case every time we OC as an individual. It's legal to consume alcohol and carry, but consider the message that it sends. The anti's would love for just one of us do something wrong or stupid.

Will not have time to post any additional confirmations or changes - its less than 6 hours to the Great Richmond OC Dinner.

Look for the after action reports and debriefings later tonight.

RichmondFuddruckers - take 3 ibuprofen & relax - we'll do this somehow.

ID stickers available for those that wish to use them - it helps make new friends.

Group picture taking session in front begins at about 6:45 PM - voluntary, but great publicity.

The official/unofficial count was 110 OCer's at Fudruckers! It was great to see such a large group where we were by far the majority of the customers. It was also great to hear our VCDL Pres. and Grapeshot.

Our first RIC OC dinner was held in August of 2006 and we had 6 in attendance at the Midlothian Honk Kong Buffet. The larger we get the more "fun" is going to be to find a restaurant that can hold us, but that's a great problem!

I enjoyed it, but it was almost too big for me! :shock:

I'm not generally a crowd person. But nonetheless it was great to see that many people come out.

Didn't get to stay long because had to go grocery shopping and shoe shopping but it was a good time. I'll be glad to continue to support Fuddruckers. :cool:

I think we set the Guiness Record for the most number of gunowners not shooting it out in a parking lot.

I had the opportunity to talk with several folks about how to start their own local OC meet-ups (dinner, lunch, breakfast, motorcycle ride for charity, etc.) I'll be watching in the coming months for announcements of these events and trying my hardest to support them with my attendance.

Yes, that includes road trips to the great unexplored regions of Sandston/ Mechanicsville and out to Charlottesville

. Perhaps even an event in the wilds of Goochland County?

Again, my thanks to Tom and Fuddruckers of Richmond for welcoming us, and especially for not tossing us out into the parking lot as the after-dinner tall tales and conspiracy planning took place. I think that after we finally got outside we saw every employee safely get in their car and start for home.

Thanks to Peter Nap, Grapeshot and all the rest who helped pull this off.

110 people lead the big parade (to the tune of 76 Trombones) to Fuddruckers.

They came from Richmond, Ashland, Culpeper, Va. Beach, Chesterfield, Henrico, NoVa, Charlottesville, Goochland, Mechanicsville and the long distance winner from Raleigh, NC - a five hour round trip! All points of the compass converged on target Tuesday.

Everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves and the food. We had non-stop conversation. What was the secret to this success? Ans: You - YOU made it happen!

This was indeed THE BIG ONE as OC dinnners go.

Smaller groups afford more time to get to know the individuals and are extremely easy to do. Pick a location, PM your acquantances & start a thread (or not) with a weeks notice - go with 4,5 or 6 people. Try it - you'll like it.

Gave out every VCDL application that I had and then some - got restocked.

Philip, VCDL President, spoke and brought us up speed on several issues - he knows that information and how we use it is the key. Peter Nap's sound system allowed me to hear every word! Thanks Don.

OC is about education, responsibility and quiet, dedicated activism. It is about freedom and choices. It is the Virginia way.

Thank you Fuddruckers & you personally Tom for allowing us this opportunity to show you that we are simply responsible good people. BTW - yes we'll be back for lunches and dinners - shame you don't serve breakfast.

Well, I got home at 1:30am, and I left at 10:10.

I had some car trouble and was only running on 3 of 4 cylinders as soon as I hit the highway. I ended up doing 55mph for the entire drive home.

In the end, I spent 6 hours and 20 minutes driving.

I did have a great time at this dinner. Hopefully I will be able to make it up to another one with some other raleigh people in tow. It was nice to meet all of you.

Great dinner indeed. Nice to meet some new folks, but agree w/Curtiswr that it was almost too big!

A picnic would allow more time for socializing. Have we ever done a picnic in the Richmond area?

     The dinner was GREAT! Thanks to Grapeshot for organizing it.
     I was able to encourage 4 other adults and a kid) to come, but I was amazed to see over a hundred people there. Gotta do this again.
     BTW, several people asked about the tee-shirt I was wearing: The Bill of Rights, overprinted in red with "VOID WHERE PROHIBITED BY LAW". For those who want one, they're $16.95 at <http://tinyurl.com/2kq2hl>. The shirts are good quality, there's no shipping/handling, and the only reference to any political party is that the very last line references the Libertarian Party of Wisconsin.

BTW - to those that have thanked me for the success of this dinner. It is not a one person effort. Lee started this thing, so is as much or more responsible for it than is any other person.

An ad hoc committee was formed a while back to select locations and get the ball rolling each month. There are four members that comprise this group and decisions are made by quorum vote.

Bottom line is this is not a one man band. Beyond the committee, others have contributed in various ways. Notably, Peter Nap with his sound system and by taking great photographs. Thanks again Don.

An absolutely fantastic and well-organized "event". The turnout was truly unbelievable. It was so nice seeing the regulars and meeting some of the new attendees (certainly was impossible to meet everyone!). It's amazing how many people traveled from other areas - especially the ones with children. What a super display of appreciation to Fuddruckers and to each other. Many thanks to Tom for preparing his staff and making sure everything ran smoothly, and for being there with his lovely family (on his night off!). It took quite a team effort to pull this one together - congrats to you all!

Welcome to OCDO CZinVA and to our dinner.

Presuming this is a first time event for you, you picked a great one to start out. This one is much larger than is our norm. We are just regular people from all walks of life - families, couples, singles, kids and at picnics dogs.
