I'm in the Hawiian shirt and Cueball is in the t-shirt.  We were both OCing.  We had a few people ask about OC and made a few converts.

This was a Republican Presidential straw poll in Puyallup and the winner was Ron Paul.

Hopefully the following URL will be updated shortly to show that Ron Paul won on August 21, 2007.

From the Meetup web site:

Ron Paul supporters turned out for the presidential straw poll held by the South Sound Ronald Reagan Republican club this evening.  Supporters canvassed people as they entered, providing slim jim handouts.  We used the one with the picture of Ron Paul with Ronald Reagan.  The results were as follows:

Brownback 1 1%
Gilmore  0 0%
Gingrich 8 5%
Giuliani 29 18%
Hagel  0 0%
Huckabee 12 8%
Hunter  10 6%
McCain  3 2%
Paul  45 28%
Romney  12 8%
Thompson 40 25%
TOTAL  160 100%

Ron Paul and his supporters subsequently received generally favorable treatment by speaker Kirby Wilbur of KVI 570 AM talk radio.  The theme we used for the event was "politics is won by those who show up", and we showed up tonight!

This is a monthly event.  If you want to show up and vote for any candidate, please do so while OCing as it is welcome at the event.  There's no reason why Ron Paul should be the only candidate with supporters who OC.

There were over 150 people there to vote, and plenty more people out just enjoying the park. Lots and lots of parents with children and people walking their dogs.

I had several positive comments and no negative ones. Brent was approached once by a gentleman and another woman. He wanted to ask if Brent was a cop. He said no and explained about OC. The woman said that she didn't notice at first, and thought it was a cell phone. I said "That's one hell of a big cell phone"! :)

The funniest part was when the MC of the event was giving his post-poll speech. He talked about how the government was supposed to protect the citizens and said "we don't carry guns around, do we?", or something to that effect. When he said that, Brent and I both looked at each other and laughed. Perhaps if people who can protect themselves would, the police would have more time to protect the people that can't protect themselves. I guess the so-called liberals aren't the only ones who want the government to take care of them.

You know, Taylor and I support Ron Paul and want to help in things like straw polls.  Why do I never here about these things until they're already done?!  I'm glad he won, and I'm glad you were there representing responsible gun owners, though.  Next time let us know!  We'd love to go to something like that!

Announcing a new event for Seattle Ron Paul 2008 Meetup Group!

What: September Straw Poll - "politics is won by those who show up"

When: Wednesday, September 26, 6:00 PM

Event fee: USD16.00 per person

Where: Click the link to find out! http://ronpaul.meetup.com/72/calendar/6231741/

Event Description: This straw poll is held by the South Sound Ronald Reagan Republican Club. The vote will be part of the General Club Meeting at Great American Casino.

Bob Williams of the Evergreen Freedom Foundation http://www.effwa.org is scheduled to be the guest speaker. This is an excellent organization well worth hearing from.

The August picnic and straw poll the South Sound Ronald Reagan Republican Club held was the first one our members attended. The group was very friendly and welcoming and everyone seemed to have a great time. Kirby Wilbur of KVI 570 AM talk radio was the speaker and made some very encouraging comments about Ron Paul. At an event where the theme was "politics is won by those who show up," we had nearly 40 people there, and won the poll with 45 votes, 28% for Ron Paul. Fred Thompson got 40 votes, 25% of the total. Let's double our showing for the September event. The August meeting we found out about just the week before. This time we have a month to prepare. Let's expect the other candidates' supporters to be doing the same after that loss.

Here are a few reasons why attending this poll monthly through February is worthwhile:

1) Winning gives us a psychological boost and emboldens us.
2) Winning makes favorable news, which helps spread the word of Ron Paul's viability.
3) Fred Thompson has been making noise about entering the race in September, and we want to show Republican party leaders that Ron Paul's supporters are more motivated than Fred Thompson's supporters.
4) We can use the event to network and meet people from other groups. At this event, we met people from other areas and found their information and experiences to be quite encouraging.
5) We can reach out to existing Republican party members with Ron Paul's positive message, which is also attracting new people to the Republican party and inspiring people to activism who have been casual Republicans.
6) Ultimately, Ron Paul will win the nomination from the Republican Party. This is one important step in making that happen.

The event organizer for the South Sound Ronald Reagan Republican Club is club vice president Dick Muri. In addition to this meetup RSVP, please also RSVP with Dick, and mail your payment to him at the address below. We don't want to count on at-the-door tickets, they prefer to sell them in advance.

Finally, a comment from the Tacoma/Pierce County Ron Paul meetup group: "We are encouraging everyone who can to actually join the club. The "Mainstream Republicans" group refers to this club as "libertarians," so they are probably going to be very receptive to Ron Paul's message. They already seemed to be."

See You There!

  1. Remember, this is a REPUBLICAN event and you are "required" to OC at the event, regardless of who you decide to support.

  2. This is a fun type of event with good food, so prepare to enjoy yourself.

Is the Great American Casino 21 and over only?  I am fairly sure the one in Renton is but I have never been to the one in Lakewood.  This would ruin any open carry!

Here's the contact information for the casino:
http://www.greatamericancasino.com/Lakewood/lake_index.htm

I called them to inquire about rules regarding minors under the age of 21, and was told that minors may be present in the casino until 9:00 p.m.  So, it looks like were good to go until 9:00 p.m.
