Shelbi and I had a great time getting to meet all you guys and gals.  As we talked about during dinner, we should definately try to keep this up once a month and move the location each time.

Packingmama:  did you want to put together a calendar of when and where we should have the meets and then we can post it and start to assign the arrangements out to the members?  If not, let me know and I can try to get it layed out and posted.  You did such a great job with this one, we really appreciate your time and effort that went in to organizing it.  THANK YOU!!!!!  If you guys want to do the next one up here in Layton, I would be glad to run with it and make sure we have another great event. I am hoping that by the time we get the second meet out of the way, we should have enough interest in a few other parts of the state to start to spead it out a little bit and allow other members to organize an event in there "back yard".

Thanks again, it was great, and I can't wait to see how "mis-quoted" we all are in the deseret new article in the morning!!!!

Nice looking group of folks.

I got my deer.  So while you guys were eating I was bringing home the bacon (oops I mean venison)... hahahaha

As Ted Nugent would say...  Kill it and grill it.

Packing heat, no apologies
'We are normal people who just happen to carry guns'

PROVO — For Clachelle Jensen, preparing to leave the house with her two children goes something like this: Baby wipes? Check. Extra diapers? Check. Glock pistol? Check.
"I just feel safer when I have my gun on my hip," said Jensen, 28, who lives in Santaquin. "There's so many lunatics and crazies out there, you never know when something's going to happen."
The petite brunette's not shy about showing off her weapon, either. The Glock has a semipermanent home on her belt.
Jensen packed her pistol to the Red Robin in Provo Saturday, where she met up with about a dozen other unabashedly armed Utahns.
They looked imposing, walking in together, loaded pistols at their sides. The somber spell was broken though, when Jensen's baby started fussing and someone's cell phone went off.
"We're not gangsters," said Brian Nelson, 27, a soft-spoken man from Layton. "We are normal people. We just happen to carry guns."
A couple of the men work in gun-related businesses; the rest ranged in occupation from computer software engineer to political lobbyist. The youngest was a fresh-faced 18-year-old, the eldest had nearly-grown children. The group first met in an online chat room, OpenCarry.org, where they discuss their decision not to conceal their weapons.

"It's a whole lifestyle change," Nelson said.
He said he feels responsible for the safety of those around him when he has a gun on his hip. He always assesses the situation and looks for the exits when he walks into a room.
"You've got to envision what could go wrong because if you make the wrong decision with a gun in your hand, you'll be spending time in jail — and rightfully so," he said.
OpenCarry.org touts the slogan: "A right unexercised is a right lost." Saturday's group of pistol packers echoed the sentiment. A bonus to keeping the gun in the open, said Pether Jensen, a self-proclaimed cowboy from West Valley City, is the opportunity it presents to educate people about Utah's gun laws. No permit is required to openly carry a gun in Utah.
"I have the right to protect my family," he said. "A lot of people don't know they have that right."
Utah gun laws are some of the most relaxed in the country, said Clark Aposhian, chairman of the Utah Shooting Sports Council. His elbow rubbed against the handle of his pistol as he munched on his hamburger. Utah also boasts one of the lowest rates of crimes committed using lawfully-obtained firearms, he said. "We aren't apologizing for a felon trying to buy a gun," he said. "We obey the law and expect everyone else to also."
The only things Clachelle Jensen has ever taken out with her pistol are targets and broken bottles. None of the diners had ever taken aim at a human being.
"I hope the day never comes when I have to use my weapon," said Kevin Jensen, Clachelle's husband. "I just like to have it there in case of emergency."
All agreed that keeping the gun out in the open encourages criminals to stay at bay.
"An armed society is a polite society," they said. Kevin Jensen said he wanted his wife to keep her gun on her belt because she didn't always have hold of the purse she kept it in. He didn't want her to end up "arming a purse-snatcher," he said.
He prefers to wear his Glock strapped to his thigh. He shrugged when someone asked if he was a member of the FBI.
"If I wear it on my waist, I can't tuck my shirt in," he said, while bouncing his 3-month-old on his hip.

Sounds like a fairly decent report of the events. The comment, however, on their site are slightly biased against us. Nicely done!
Did you do a PR or did the press just show up?

No worries, its gets spelled wrong more than it does right.

Not a bad article they published, she actually stayed pretty open minded about the cause and stated it pretty well.  A few things I did notice were that Clark was eating fish and chips, not a hamburger, and if I remember right, your comment was "If I wear it on my hip, then I have to tuck in my shirt" not "can't tuck in my shirt.  But overall, not a bad representation of our event.

So where should we have the next one?

Take Care, B

Misquoted but that is not unusual.

I stated that Utah has some of the most "permissive" laws for carrying firearms in the nation. "relaxed" is not quite the same nor does it portray what is meant as accurately at Permissive.  The word relaxed tends to indicate a deficiency.

I never used the word "apologizing" either, I said the people at this table are not apologists for people who use guns to commit crimes or obtain firearms illegally.

But hey, just remember doesn't matter what is written as long as they spell your name right.

To her credit I found the reporter asked good questions especially for someone who , admittedly, was uninformed on the subject of firearm especially CCW or OC.

Sincerely,

W. Clark Aposhian

My thoughts are that we sloowly  work our way up north in increments.  and spend a long time in Salt Lake Area before we venture too far north.

Let us count the number of rounds available that night.

I had a very low "round to weapon" count with a total of 13 total rounds/2 weapons.  No spare mags carried.

I had my XD 45ACP w/ 14 rounds and 2 extra mags for a grand total of 40 rounds!

I love the comment the article "Brian Nelson, a soft-spoken man from Layton"  my wife really gets a kick out of it too.  I can't believe what a stir it is making in the comments section of the article.  We really need to keep these events up every month and make sure to keep inviting multiple different media organizations.

Lets get the location and the date set for the next one!!!

I also got a kick out of this quote Brian, all the years I've known you I don't think soft spoken quite describes you.  lol

Ya, I must have put on a good show for the reporter....  We should be having another event next month.  You should plan to attend the next one, it might even be up here in Layton.  We had such a good time, and I am having a blast posting replies to the comments posted online about the article.

How did you hear about the article?

Isn't that a Thursday?  I guess we could have it on a weekday, but the people that actually have to travel a bit to get there might be press for time.  I was also thinking maybe doing one in November and then again in December just to keep the trend going and stay in the "watchful eye of the public".  What does everyone think?  B

I will have to check with the wife and see if she is ok with that date, as our anniversary is the 14th.  It will probably work, but I will check and then post the date and time so everyone can start to plan to attend.  B

sorry I've been busy with kids, Tacomatose I wouldn't mind putting together a calendar. Do you still want to make it every second Saturday like we talked about, so it will be routine with everyone and be easier to remember? It sounds like people have different dates in mind. Nov. 10th or 17th? which is it for November.. Tacomatose why don't you decide since you will be planning it for Layton. Then let me know. Also Same time every month?

packingmama, don't you love some of the comments on the story?  The audacity of people to tell you how to raise your children.  All I know is that your kids are 1,000,000 times better off in your home than being raised as spoiled, misguided, freedom hating, little crack-head brats down in Malibu and Hollywood.  More power to you and Sarge, my wife and I plan to raise my kids the same way; the right way.

I will check with Shelbi and make sure that she didn't already have something else planned on the 17th (anniversary) and I will post later tonight as to the date and time.  I think that 6pm will work good as long as we keep the events on the weekends.  We can always mix it up later if we choose to.  We are pretty much starting from scratch on these events so I am sure we will have to mold the calander a little bit.

Where do you guys want to eat??? any suggestions???  I have some places in mind, but I might be persuaded;)  B

I have been reading them all day long, they keep coming. There is now over 70 posts! At first some of them made my blood boil, now I am starting to laugh at them realizing how uneducated some people are and how ignorant they are for not wanting to learn the truth and just go off of the media or the bad things they here about guns. Sgt. and I will continue to raise our kids the way we believe regardless of what other people think or say.  We know are kids will not be one of the statistics of kids getting ahold of guns. Thanks for the comment.

I had sent you a message asking you about your conversation with Red Robin when you arranged the reservation for the dinner.  I am curious how the conversation went, and how you introduced the group and the fact that we would all be carrying guns.  B

Let's hand out flyers or invitation cards at the USSC and Crossroads gun shows.

:celebrate

Taylorgunsmithing.com always has a booth at Crossroads, I bet he'd let us leave some there for people to take too.

How many rounds? Well, I had 11 rounds in my SW99 (10+1), which I was open carrying.

What people didn't see was the G27 and spare mag in my SmartCarry holster, which meant another 19 rounds (9+1+9). So, I had 30 rounds of .40 S&W on me.

It was a great get-together, but I wouldn't mind having one closer to Cache Valley. It was a long drive to Provo.

I would also like to mention that this event was a combination of people from opencarry.org and utahconcealedcarry.com. I don't want the other forum to be ignored on this.

Clark, I'll just bet that your car can make it north of SLC...

Where are the rest of the women? I haven't seen or heard from any of them on these threads.  At least not to my knowledge. Ladies we need to be heard, where are you hiding? Or what's your screenname so I can tell who you are.

I would definitely like to join you next time you get down here to the Provo area. I carried open for several years until I joined the Sherrif's emergency communication team and was told not to. I need to talk to the current Sherrif about it. I don't think it would be a problem as long as there is no hint that I might be an LEO.

What would have been really great would have been to have invited the reporter to a range and let her experience handling a handgun. Being one of the range volunteers ant the Provo range, I'd be happy to provide access to the range next time.

Unfortunately, it seems that this forum, (and many others) are predominately male.  Imagine if the number of motivated male members of OCDO and other gun organizations were to be equaled or exceeded by women?  Talk about progress!  Kudos to packingmama for rallying the "female troops".

This offer was given to the reporter, and we have follow up with emails to make sure the offer was received.  You are right, once they get the feel for freedom, they will never give it up!!! B

That would be great. Does the range close soon beacuse of the season. Wouldn't we have to do it soon?

Arranging range time shouldn't ever be a problem.  There are many ranges, included outdoor ranges that are open year round.  We host a weekly Bowling Pin shoot here in ogden (indoors) and a monthly pin shoot outdoors, and we do them all year long as well.......Just watch them try to stop us from feeding our lead and gun powder addictions:cuss: B

That is the sweet part of being a range volunteer. I can go or take people anyytime I like as long as the road is passable.

Excellent Job !:celebrate

We have had alot of exposure through the media here in Virginia this past year concerning OPEN CARRY and I would like to say that you all are doing a fine job.I would also like to add that you have found quite a spokes person with Clark Aposhian, very professional, well informed and seems to have a good attitude.Very good PR.

If I may, I would like to make one suggestion. When talking to the media, rather than calling your gun a"weapon", refer to it as a firearm .The word weapon has an aggressive or negative sound to it. I use the term "defensive firearm" when I speak with the media or when I know they are present, such as a Town Counsel meeting or a dinner gathering such as you had.Remember, it's all about public perception. Just as more exposure will breed tolerance, softening public perception via wording is very effective at gaining acceptance ( the libs do it all the time).

OC'ers in Virginia say KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK:cool:
